I see motley fool was pushing Goog and VMW for cloud computing. And sugest staying away from MSFT. Fool also has another one there trying to sell that they think will be big in cloud app.

VMWare is the obvious play, and it will probably be a good one.

Google is also a good play for cloud computing, but I worry about their overall valuation because of ad-based revenue and that changing landscape.

I would be interested in hearing what other one they are pushing.

Which one of their MANY newsletters is talking about cloud computing?

Thanks, djv.

The Markets are Nocturnal: Daytime vs Overnight Performance

21Jul08
<!-- The following two sections are for a noteworthy plugin currently in alpha. They'll get cleaned up and integrated better -->
This is a follow-up to a very interesting post from Brett Steenbarger?s TraderFeed.
Brett divided the S&P 500?s performance (using SPY as a proxy) into changes that occurred from the close to the open (overnight) and those that occurred from the open to the close (daytime) since 2005. I?ve taken a bit wider view and reproduced his results using all SPY data, 1993 to 06/2008, assuming an arbitrary starting value of $1,000.
The three lines above represent the SPY (blue), daytime changes (green), and overnight changes (red). The chart has been logarithmically scaled.
As the chart makes clear, the bullish trend over the last 15 years has been the result of the overnight market, while even during the irrational exuberance of the late 90?s, the daytime market has been timidly flat. Additionally, the overnight market has been the more bear-resistant of the two and exhibited only about half of the volatility. Some stats:
The overnight and daytime markets have been almost completely unrelated. The correlation between overnight and subsequent daytime changes was -7.2%. Between daytime and subsequent overnight changes it was -7.7%. These are very disparate markets.
What?s the point? The point is NOT that we should only be trading the overnight market; there are a number of factors (ex. liquidity and transaction costs) that would need to be considered. The point is that each market presents different opportunities to different types of traders: very active long/short traders might prefer the volatility of the daytime market, while long-only traders might be wary of exiting positions at the close in a bull market.

Very interesting chart. Not sure how to utilize it without increasing trading costs for transactions at a higher rate, though.

One simple step is to never buy until late in the day... but that has been discussed for years and has a nominal effect.

Not a believer.

Bought a small position in DXD.

Now own:

ACTC.pk
F
DXD

Have a buy order in on DIS if it gets back down to where I want it.

Also anxiously wanting MSFT to sink back down a little.

MJ first chance I had to sell Drys I think I would. I understand from a couple of the yack shows they have cash proplems and it can hurt them.
Hey guy,s anyone find out what that third stock from the fool,s was dealing with cloud computing. First two were Goog & VMW.

i'm in DRYS this time at $3.99 and was thinking that myself but i think they have a lot more upside left. it's one crazy volatile stock, that's fer sure. i like the shiiping stocks right now obviously.

Was it Amazon (AMZN) - they are one of the biggest players in cloud computing right now. They were probably the first major company to invest heavily in it.

Just curious

Just curious

How long do you normally hold a stock? Day trade? week? month? longer?

Technical? Fundamental traders?

I prefer options but if its cool would like to contribute a few stocks every so often. But wanted to see what criteria (price, support, resistance, other technicals, timeframe, etc.) you look for and base a trade on.

Have a great one

Amazon Makes sence. MSFT they say will suffer from Cloud computing. I guess Im not smart enough to know why. I like MSFT for now got in last month before upturn.
Livintillthend I can only talk for myself. But some day trades if they work. Some a day or two/week and some longer haul for div,s. Being retired I have certain amounts safe as can be. But I have my side pot for lets call it what it is gambling. And it can be as much excitment as a couple nfl plays.
