Student told to take U.S. flag off bike
Published: Nov. 11, 2010 at 6:49 PM

DENAIR, Calif., Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Officials in a California school district said a middle school student was told to take a U.S. flag off his bike to avoid "racial tension."

Denair Unified School District Superintendent Edward Parraz said Cody Alicea, 13, was told not to fly the U.S. flag from his bike while at Denair Middle School after complaints from other students, KCRA-TV, Sacramento, Calif., reported.

"(The) First Amendment is important," Parraz said. "We want the kids to respect it, understand it, and with that comes a responsibility."

Parraz said racial tensions boiled over at the school this year around the Cinco de Mayo holiday.

"Our Hispanic, you know, kids will, you know, bring their Mexican flags and they'll display it, and then of course the kids would do the American flag situation, and it does cause kind of a racial tension which we don't really want," Parraz said. "We want them to appreciate the cultures."

Alicea's parents said he flies the flag from his bike as a tribute to veterans in his family.

"He's got that flag on his bike because he's proud of where he comes from," Alicea's father, Robert Kisner, said.

Alicea folds up the flag and keeps it in his backpack while attend class, the TV station said.

On the course!
It's real fucking simple: When your, you know, Mexican kids, you know, bring their fucking Mexican flags........You remind them this isn't Mexico!

Why is this shit so hard to not only UNDERSTAND, but enforce? Why do we CONSTANTLY make the citizens of this country bow down to everyone else?

Lame that the kid is not allowed to fly his flag, but also see nothing wrong with the mexicans flying their flag.

Somebody should make a t-shirt with a picture of Winfield Scott on it saying 'Remember Veracruz!' and have the kid wear it to school. I wonder if they would even get it. :director:

Many Rally To Support Boy's Flag Display

Motorcycle Riders Back Denair Teen

A 13-year-old Stanislaus County boy at the center of a flag controversy got a big show of support Monday as many people rallied to his side.
Cody Alicea was earlier told by Denair Middle School officials that he could not ride to school with a U.S. flag on his bike. The story has gained national attention, from Rush Limbaugh to the Drudge Report.
The school changed its mind, and now Alicea can display the stars and stripes.
When he rode from his home to school on Monday, he was followed by a parade of people on motorcycles. A military jet flyover was also expected.
"I'd just like to say thanks for the support," Alicea said before his ride.
Officials at the school told Alicea not to display the flag, citing safety concerns. Some students had complained about the display.

Denair Unified School District Superintendent Edward Parraz said the campus recently experienced some racial tension. He said some students got out of hand on Cinco de Mayo. He said some students displayed the Mexican flag, while others displayed American flags.
Parraz said he got calls from halfway around the world about the flag controversy. Some soldiers in Afghanistan called to complain.
Alicea said he was surprised at the attention.
"This is big," Alicea said. "I didn't think it'd get this big."
