Anyone ever been sprayed by a skunk or had your dog sprayed by one? How long will the stench last? Any ways to get rid of it? My dog, after eating all my prescription pills this morning decided that wasn't enough riffraff for one day and sticks her head straight into a skunk. Now she and my just-detailed car stink like nothing I have ever smelled before.

I was always one of those people who thought that the distant smell of a skunk was kind of a good smell...never minded it...

But the up close and personal smell is a whole different story. I can't sleep it's so horrible... my head hurts... Gave her a bath in tomato juice  and then shampooed her, but...oh man...And the stupid skunk gave her a mouthful, so everytime she opens her mouth or licks herself it is just unbearable, and I get the distinct feeling she is none too happy about it either :sadwave:

I know there are a bunch of funny things to say about this but its to early and brain isnt functioning all the way yet.

Head over to the local pet supply store. I have seen shampoos for getting rid of skunk smells there. Hopefully they will have something for the dogs breath also. If its real busy take the dog with you to be able to go right to the front of the checkout line.

Have no clue on what to use for the car.

supposedly tomata juice. if a pet gets sprayed in the eyes enough times, they will go blind from the acid in the spray.

your car, I'm afraid, is screwed! About the only thing that's going to help with the smell is time, I'm afraid. Bad situation!!

My mother's home church had skunks in the crawl space (3 I think). They called the local animal control officer, and that dummy went under there and shotgunned them! The church smelled like skunk for (not kidding here) 3 years! It's finally dissipated now, but it's a horrible bad smell to get rid of. Nearly impossible.

This seems like the best recipe for skunk treatment. Mix a couple bottles of hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup baking soda and a squirt of baby shampoo or liquid hand soap. Use it immediately as it loses effectiveness after a while. Soak them up with it, let it stand for a few minutes, then rinse off. Keep it out of the eyes, but cover the rest of the dog.

Another... Bottle of peroxide, cup of dish washing soap (grease cutting type) and a cup of laundry detergent.
Seems the skunk spray is oil base. The dish soap will cut it loose, the peroxide will neturalize it and the laundry soap makes it thick and stay on the dog as you wash him.

Lastly, I have read about guys using douche to clean their dogs. I'm sure it would take several douches to be able to get your dog covered, but with a smell that bad, I'm sure you're probably willing to give about anything a shot!!! GL!

That hydrogen peroxide mixture will work well on your dog(keep out of eyes). My dog got in a fight with a skunk last Monday night @ 1am.... finally got him away from the skunk an hour later, hosed him down and scrubbed him with that mixture and it worked well. He spent the night in the garage just to make sure...

NO!!!! Just bought my car a few months ago...and I am in Virginia now and have to drive cross-country to Colorado in a couple weeks... and can't stand sitting in that smell for 24 hours, and of course it will be relatively cold, so I will have the windows up. Read online that I could dump baking soda all over every surface and let it sit for three days then vacuum it up???? Going to try at least...it is horrific - can't get within 10 feet of the car without feeling nauseous...for real.

When my dog Ziggy is going out skunk fighting, I put his rain coat on him and it seems to help.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode.

Me thinks you should get rid of that car before the O attaches itself to the B and your hair and everything else starts to stink!!
