Sweet corn is very plentiful right now in my neck of the woods. It is quite delicious, too!
There is a roadside stand about three miles from where I work that runs on the honor system. They have a huge table with hundreds of ears put out each morning, and a lock box secured to the table. The sign says, "$4.50 a dozen/.40 an ear"
Well, I grabbed 25 ears and tossed a ten spot in the box a couple days ago. Picked up a box of brats on the way home, and had a great night over at the neighbor's with friends. I brought up the subject of corn theft from a place like this, as certainly it had to happen now and again. My friends agreed, but it couldn't be too significant, or the stand would not run. My friend's wife asked if I could grab another 24 ears the next day, and I said I would.
That afternoon there was another car at the stand just loading up with a bag of corn and getting ready to leave, so I pulled behind them. As I got out, they pulled away. In the mean time, another van had just pulled off to the side of the highway, and the guy hopped out. He went to the stand, grabbed 4-5 ears, put them in the passenger side, and took off! Not even a thought of paying!
I just don't get how people live with themselves out there? Is the thought, "It's just a little corn", or is it, "If you're dumb enough to leave it here, I'm smart enough to take it"? I don't know? I think it's pretty sad, though.
Corn grills up really great, though!
