College Football Odds Week 8: Opening lines

Justin Fields and Ohio State finally get the 2020 season off the ground Saturday against Nebraska. The Buckeyes opened as 24.5-point home favorites at FanDuel and are already up to -27.5.

College football odds for Week 8 are on the betting board and already getting action, with the Big Ten finally joining the 2020 party. No. 5 Ohio State kicks off with a home game against Nebraska, while in the SEC, Alabama is a hefty favorite at Tennessee.

FanDuel Sportsbook provided insights on college football Week 8 opening lines, early line movement, sharp money and public betting for this week's matchups.

These are the current College football Week 8 odds for the premier games on the schedule, as of October 20.

Illinois at (14) Wisconsin odds
Opening line
Wisconsin -23.5, Over/Under 51.5
Why the line moved
This line made a big jump at FanDuel on Monday, opening at Wisconsin -23.5 in the morning and dropping to -19.5 by the evening. The early betting splits bear out that move, with 81 percent of tickets/89 percent of money on Illinois.

Pittsburgh +9.5, Over/Under 50.5
Why the line moved
The Fighting Irish jumped to -11.5 by Monday afternoon, then receded to -10.5 at FanDuel. Early ticket count is almost 3/1 and early money almost 4/1 on Notre Dame. The total dropped from 50.5 to 47.5, thanks to 53 percent of tickets and 79 percent of money flowing to the Under.

Tennessee +19.5, Over/Under 64.5
Why the line moved
At FanDuel, the initial move on this game was to 'Bama -18.5, but there was a quick correction, and the Crimson Tide were up to -21.5 by mid-Monday afternoon. That's because almost everything is on Alabama through Monday night, at 97 percent of point-spread tickets and 99 percent of spread money. The total dropped from 64.5 to 61.5, then crept back to 62.5, with tickets and money still more than 9/1 on the Over.

Opening line
North Carolina -14.5, Over/Under 65.5
Why the line moved
North Carolina opened beyond a two-touchdown chalk and is already up to -16.5 at FanDuel, geting 62 percent of early bets. But point-spread money is two-way, with a lean toward the Tar Heels at 52 percent. The total is down to 63.5 from 65.5, despite almost all the bets/money on the Over through Monday night.


Syracuse vs (1) Clemson Odds

Clemson -44.5, Over/Under 59.5
Why the line moved
When you're favored by 44.5, there probably aren't a lot of early bettors laying the number, so it's no surprise this line hasn't moved through Monday night at FanDuel. That said, in what's likely very limited betting, there is two-way play here, with Clemson taking 60 percent of bets and 55 percent of money. The total went from 59.5 to 61.5, with tickets and money running 9/1 on the Over.

Indiana +7.5, Over/Under 57.5
Why the line moved
The Nittany Lions dipped to -6.5 Sunday at FanDuel, but this game is all Penn State early, with tickets and money both running more than 9/1 on the favorite.


Nebraska at (5) Ohio State odds
Opening line
Ohio State -24.5, Over/Under 64.5
Why the line moved
Justin Fields and Ohio State open the 2020 campaign at home, and bettors are already on the Buckeyes, who are up to -27.5 Monday night at FanDuel. The Buckeyes are attracting 75 percent of bets/84 percent of money on the spread.

Opening line
SMU +1.5, Over/Under 56.5
Why the line moved
It's a battle of unbeatens in the American Athletic Conference, and this line has already jumped the fence. Cincinnati (3-0) opened -1.5, but by mid-Monday morning, SMU (5-0) was at -2.5. Through Monday night, the Bearcats are taking 73 percent of bets, but the Mustangs are drawing 57 percent of money on the spread. The total went from 56.5 to 57.5 and back to 56.5 on some interesting splits: 83 percent of bets are on the Over, but a whopping 92 percent of cash is on the Under.

Opening line
Oklahoma State -3.5, Over/Under 54.5
Why the line moved
Through Monday night, this line remains at Cowboys -3.5 at FanDuel, where 51 percent of early bets are on Oklahoma State, but 64 percent of dollars are on the Cyclones.

Why the line moved

The Red Wolves picked up their first conference win of the season last Thursday against Georgia State. Arkansas State survived a shootout, winning 59-52, and head coach Blake Anderson made the decision to fire defensive coordinator David Duggan and defensive pass-game coordinator Ed Pinkham in the wake of the result.

High-scoring games have become the norm for Arkansas State, and the over has cashed in each of the last four games.

The Red Wolves have largely outperformed expectations too with a 4-1 ATS mark, highlighted by an upset win over Kansas State as a 15.5-point underdog back in Week 2.

This will be the first time the Mountaineers have taken the field in the month of October. Appalachian State had a little bit of a scare the last time we saw them play, as this team trailed FCS Campbell 13-7 late in the second quarter as a 33.5-point favorite. However, the Mountaineers turned it on in the second half and nearly covered the spread in a 52-21 victory.

Appalachian State has yet to cover a game this season. The Mountaineers lost outright to Marshall as a six-point favorite the last time they played an FBS opponent, and they struggled against Charlotte as more than a two-touchdown favorite in their opener.

Betting Analysis ? Red Wolves

Overall: 3-2 SU, 4-1 ATS, 4-1 O/U

It was clear that Anderson needed to shake things up on defense after the Red Wolves were gashed by the Panthers last Thursday. Arkansas State currently ranks 120th in defensive SP+, and this unit is the worst of any team that has played multiple games. The Red Wolves are allowing 43.0 PPG and 501.5 YPG with the secondary conceding a stunning 9.2 YPA.

Anderson promoted safeties coach Nick Paremski to interim defensive coordinator over the weekend. Paremski has experience calling plays as he was the defensive coordinator at West Texas A&M for three years before coming to Jonesboro.

This offense has had to put up big numbers to win games, and Arkansas State has been great on this side of the ball. The Red Wolves rank 24th in offensive SP+, as both Logan Bonner and Layne Hatcher are moving the ball effectively through the air.

Neither quarterback is much of a scrambler, but they have combined to complete 63.6 percent of their passes for 1,834 yards with 21 touchdowns and four interceptions in five games. They shredded Georgia State last week as Arkansas State threw eight touchdown passes against the Panthers.

That production has made this passing game one of the best in college football. Jonathan Adams Jr., Dahu Green, and Brandon Bowling are all having great seasons as the leading receivers, but the run game has struggled to get the job done.

Arkansas State is averaging just 3.0 YPC, and the Red Wolves had 39 carries for just 58 yards last week.

Betting Analysis - Mountaineers

Overall: 2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS, 1-2 O/U

COVID-19 upended Appalachian State?s schedule, and it led to the Mountaineers postponing two games over the last month. It continues to be a major problem for this program too, as there are currently seven skill position players listed as questionable to play in this game due to the virus.

That hasn?t been easy for first-year head coach Shawn Clark since he is looking to lead Appalachian State to at least a share of the Sun Belt title for the fifth straight season.

The Mountaineers do have one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the country in Zac Thomas. Thomas has never been a world beater at the position, but he is a steady hand that won?t lose you the game.

This is his third year as Appalachian State?s starter, and he was named Preseason First Team All-Sun Belt prior to the start of the year. However, he hasn?t looked great through three games, completing just 62.3 percent of his passes for 603 yards with two touchdowns and two picks. Additionally, he hasn?t been the run threat we have seen in the past either with just 45 rushing yards.

Appalachian State has been able to run the ball well this season. Daetrich Harrington is averaging 5.1 YPC as the team?s leading rusher, and the three backs behind him are all averaging well over 6.0 YPC. Marcus Williams Jr. is averaging 8.4 YPC, but he is one of the players that is questionable to play on Thursday.

Thomas Hennigan has been responsible for nearly half of Appalachian State?s receiving numbers, catching 13 passes for 275 yards. He might see even more targets against Arkansas State as fellow senior starters Malik Williams and Jalen Virgil are both 'questionable' for Thursday. The Mountaineers? top three tight ends are questionable due to COVID-19 too, so we might see a number of new faces.

Defense has been a hallmark for Appalachian State over the years, and this side of the ball has been solid through three games. The Mountaineers have one of the best pass defenses in the country, allowing just 5.5 YPA, and they are currently in the top 15 nationally in both scoring defense and total defense.

However, they haven?t faced an offense with a passing game like Arkansas State. Neither Marshall nor Campbell can move the ball well through the air, so this will be the secondary?s first real challenge.

Head-to-Head

This will be just the fourth meeting between these two programs.

Interestingly enough, the home team has yet to win a game in this series, as Appalachian State won in Jonesboro in 2014 and 2018, while Arkansas State won in Boone in 2015.

Last Meeting

Appalachian State dismantled Arkansas State 35-9 the last time these teams met. The Mountaineers? defense rose to the occasion in a big way, picking off Justice Hansen three times in the victory.

The Red Wolves could only muster 3.2 YPC and 4.9 YPA on the evening, as this offense was no match for App State?s defense.

The Mountaineers were happy to just grind the Red Wolves down on offense. Appalachian State ran the ball 38 times for 246 yards and three touchdowns, and this team will certainly try to establish the run on Thursday. A lot has changed in Boone over the last two seasons, but the Mountaineers will still run the ball as much as possible.

Sunday?s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Indiana 36, Penn State 35 OT? I could write about this game for an hour.
? Hoosiers snapped a 41-game losing skid to top 10 teams, which dated back to 1987.
? Penn State led 21-20, had the ball with 1:40 left and could?ve run out the clock, but Indiana let them score a TD and Penn State stupidly did so- take a knee, win 21-20. Then they didn?t go for 2, when that would?ve put them up 29-20 and ended the game.
? Indiana tied the game with 0:22 left in regulation.

? Both teams scored a TD in OT; when Indiana scored to make it 35-34, they went for two- their QB scrambled and appeared to be stopped short of the goal line, but the linesman called it good, replay declined to overturn the call and the Hoosiers had their upset.
? If I was James Franklin, I would?ve found the replay official after the game and given him a piece of my mind. To me, the ball hit out of bounds before it hit the pylon.

? Anyway, Penn State outgained Indiana 488-211, outrushed them 250-41. Game shouldn?t have gotten to overtime.
? Penn State had ten penalties for 100 yards, Indiana four for 36.

12) Middle Tennessee 40, Rice 34 OT? You have to find a replay of this on the Interweb; Owls tried a 45-yard FG to win the game earlier in OT, the ball hits:
? the right upright
? the crossbar
? the left upright
? the crossbar again, and bounces out, no good.

I?ve never seen that happen before; rough way to start your season- this was Rice?s first game.

11) Auburn 35, Ole Miss 28
? Rebels are only 1-4, but they?ve been fun to watch.
? Auburn threw a 58-yard TD pass with 1:11 left for the win.
? Teams combined to convert 21-32 third down plays.

Watching these games with teams that didn?t play any non-conference games, you understand why teams schedule stiffs to play before conference play begins? they get the kinks out, gain some continuity, so they don?t look terrible when conference play begins.

10) Rutgers 38, Michigan State 27
? Spartans turned ball over seven (7!!!) times; hard to win that way.
? Switching head coaches from Mark D?Antonio to Mel Tucker is not an upgrade. Tucker was 5-7 in his only season as a head coach, at Colorado LY.
? Rutgers turned ball over three times themselves; they were outgained 369-276.

9) Nevada 37, Wyoming 34 OT
? Nevada?s punter was a star of the game; had a 75-yard punt, then a 72-yarder that pinned Wyoming back on their 2-yard line. Of course, if Wyoming?s punt returner would actually catch a punt, he would?ve helped his team?s cause a lot.
? Cowboys kicked a 42-yard FG with 0:23 left to send the game to OT; freshman walk-on kicker made 4-4 field goals, while wearing a red shoe. Give the kid a scholarship; make sure he keeps using the red shoe.
? Nevada led 28-6 with 3:00 left in third quarter, before Wyoming stormed back to tie it.

? Fun to see Mountain West football on TV again; this was a wild game.
? Nevada coach Norvell lost his father earlier this week. Our condolences to him.

8) They?re building the Aztecs a new football stadium on the site of what used to be Jack Murphy Stadium, so San Diego State is playing home games in a soccer stadium in Carson, where the Chargers played home games the last few years.

6) Clemson 47, Syracuse 21? Clemson was favored by 46 or 47 points, but Syracuse had the ball, down 27-21 in third quarter, before reality set in. Clemson coasted here, and star RB Etienne left with an injury.

5) Missouri 20, Kentucky 10: Random observation: Week-to week, teams are having wildly erratic performances. Mizzou outgained Kentucky 421-145 in this game, after Wildcats won their previous two games by a combined score of 58-9. Missouri ran 92 plays in this game, Kentucky ran only 36 plays.

4) North Carolina 48, NC State 21:
? Tar Heels ran the ball for 326 yards, gained 578 yards on the day.
? NC State?s receivers were terrible in this game; they?re juggling backup QB?s with the starter breaking his leg. One of the WR?s dropped an easy TD, juggling it until a defender picked it off.
? State threw the ball for 358 yards; 11 different kids caught a pass, but they were useless when the game was close.

3) If you bet first half lines in college football, you probably know that Liberty is 26-7 ATS in their last 33 first halves. Independent Flames are 6-0 SU this season.

2) This is a very 2020 thing: Army already accepted a bowl bid, to the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, where they?ll play a Pac-12 opponent.

The thing is, Pac-12 won?t even start their football season for a couple more weeks, and one of their teams? bowl opponents has already been decided. Very unusual. Very 2020.

? Brett Phillips, with a .202 lifetime average, had the game-winning hit.
? Seager/Turner both had four hits for LA.
? There was a run scored in eight consecutive half-innings, setting a World Series record.
? This was third World Series game ever that, with today?s save rules, there were 3+ saves blown in the same game- the others were in 1960, 2011.
? Hunter Renfroe finished this game at 1B, where he had played for an entire 9 innings in his entire big league career.
