College Football Odds Week 9: Opening lines

Quarterback Sean Clifford hopes to help Penn State rebound from last week's upset loss at Indiana. But it'll be a tough task against No. 5 Ohio State, which is a 12.5-point road favorite at FanDuel.

College football odds for Week 9 are on the betting board and already getting action, most notably for the lone matchup featuring two ranked teams. No. 3 Ohio State hits the road for a key Big Ten contest against No. 17 Penn State.

Michigan State at (14) Michigan odds
Opening line
Michigan -24.5, Over/Under 53.5

Why the line moved
Michigan is a monster favorite on Halloween, and in fact, the first move on this line at FanDuel was to Wolverines -25.5. However, the line reverted back to the opener of -24.5 Monday afternoon on two-way action, with 53 percent of bets on Michigan and 51 percent of money on Michigan State. The total is up to 54.5 Monday evening, with practically all the early tickets and 83 percent of early money on the Over.

Opening line
West Virginia -3.5, Over/Under 50.5

Why the line moved
The Mountaineers remain -3.5 at FanDuel on Monday night, but the betting splits are wildly in favor of the Wildcats, as early tickets and money are both in the 9/1 range on Kansas State. The total is already down 2 points to 48.5 Monday night, with 55 percent of early bets on the Over, but more than 90 percent of early money on the Under.

Boston College at (1) Clemson Odds
Opening line
Clemson -31.5, Over/Under 60.5

Why the line moved
Another game, another massive spread for Clemson, and the line hasn't moved at all as of Monday night. The Tigers are taking 59 percent of tickets/79 percent of money, but that money is apparently so light that it's not yet moving the number. The total is up to 61.5, with practically every ticket and dollar on the Over.

Ohio State -10.5, Over/Under TBA

Why the line moved
This is the game of the week on an otherwise very nondescript schedule, and Ohio State is getting all the early attention. Penn State's 36-35 upset loss as 7-point chalk at Indiana probably has plenty to do with that, as both teams head into Week 2 of Big Ten play. The Buckeyes are already up to -12.5, landing 92 percent of bets and 97 percent of cash on the spread.

Memphis vs (7) Cincinnati Odds
Opening line
Cincinnati -6.5, Over/Under 60.5

Why the line moved
Through Monday night, this line is pinned at Cincinnati -6.5, despite point-spread tickets and money running more than 9/1 on the Bearcats. That would seem to indicate pretty light action at FanDuel thus far. The total dropped in a big hurry Monday, from 60.5 to 55.5 before rebounding to 56.5, with 60 percent of bets on the Over, but 69 percent of money on the Under.

Texas at (6) Oklahoma State odds
Opening line
Oklahoma State -2.5, Over/Under 57.5

Why the line moved
Oklahoma State looks to stay unbeaten, and early action at FanDuel leans toward the Cowboys, who are up to -3.5 and attracting 67 percent of bets and 56 percent of money on the spread. The total is up a point to 58.5, with nearly every ticket and dollar on the Over through Monday night.

Central Florida at Houston odds
Opening line
Houston +3.5, Over/Under 77.5

Why the line moved
FanDuel opened Central Florida -3.5 on the road and is down to -2.5, though ticket count and dollars bet are running about 8/1 on the Knights. The first move on the total was down a point to 76.5, but it's now up to 78.5, with tickets and money in the 9/1 range on the Over.

LSU at Auburn odds
Opening line
Auburn +2.5, Over/Under 62.5

Why the line moved
Perhaps surprisingly, neither defending national champion LSU nor Auburn are ranked heading into this SEC clash. LSU ticked up to -3.5 a couple of times Monday at FanDuel, but the line is back at the opener of -2.5 Monday night, despite a ticket count of 4/1 and nearly all the money on the Tigers. The total is up a point to 63.5, but FanDuel didn't have early betting splits.

Mississippi State at (2) Alabama odds
Opening line
Alabama -31.5, Over/Under 62.5

Why the line moved
The second-ranked Crimson Tide initially moved to -32.5 at FanDuel, but are down to -30.5 Monday night. Point-spread ticket count is almost dead even, although 73 percent of early money is on Alabama. The total is up two points to 64.5, with early tickets more than 8/1 and early money more than 9/1 on the Over.

Kentucky -15.5, Over/Under 44.5

Why the line moved
This line bounced around a bit early at FanDuel, dipping to Georgia -13.5 and back to the opener of -15.5, before settling at -14.5. The total is down two points to 42.5. FanDuel didn't have betting splits available Monday night.

After losing and failing to cover five straight vs. GSU, USA at least covered in LY?s close 20-17 loss.
Eagle margin of win was 32.4 pg in previous five series wins.
Jags on 10-3 spread uptick since mid 2019.
GSU only 2-5 last seven as Belt chalk.

13) First of all, thanks to all the MLB/NBA players (NHL too, but I don?t want watch much hockey) for entertaining us for the last several months. 2020 has been a cruddy year, and while I know pro athletes make a boatload of money, they put up with unusual circumstances and put on a good show for us this season. Their efforts are appreciated.

12) NBA?s revenue dropped 10% to $8.3B for the 2019-20 season amid losses because of the coronavirus pandemic. Losses included $800M loss in gate receipts and a $400M loss in sponsorships and merchandise.

Losses also included $200M in deemed ?net negative impact? from a months-long splintering of a partnership with China, after then-Rockets GM Daryl Morey tweeted something about Hong Kong that ticked off the Chinese government.

Thing is, Jets have a bunch of high draft picks coming up, and figure to get more if they deal Sam Darnold; they may not be terrible for much longer.

3) I stumbled upon the movie Brian?s Song the other night, the 1971 original with James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. Great movie, sad movie, the true story of the friendship between two running backs on the Bears, Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo.

I was 10 years old when it first aired on ABC?s Tuesday Night Movie; first movie that made me cry. If you see it on your TV listings, it is well worth watching.

2) Tuesday night, top of the 4th inning, and FOX does an interview with Kevin Cash while the game is going on; WHY?!?!?!? It is the bleeping World Series and you?re bothering a manager to do a nonsensical interview. Maybe if they asked him if he was going to stupidly remove his pitcher after 73 pitches, then maybe the interview would?ve made sense.

Speaking of Blake Snell, last time he finished the 6th inning was 20 starts ago, back in July 2019. But he was rolling Tuesday night; it was almost like they wanted to take him out.

1) Case Keenum is the backup QB in Cleveland this year; I?m hoping he writes a book someday, because he?s had an interesting career:

2007-11? Keenum was a 4-year starter for the Houston Cougars; he threw for 19,217 yards and 155 touchdowns. They retired his number.
2012? Keenum wasn?t drafted, but made the Houston Texans? practice squad.

Three-Headed Monster vs. the Field

Clemson wasn't as dominant vs. Syracuse at home, but it's not easy to hang 73-burgers on a weekly basis. Dabo Swinney was a bit lame for my taste in his post-game presser, but we don't punish teams for that, nor do we downgrade for non-covers when they're laying North of 45 points.

Although Alabama coasted to another win and my pick-pack purchasers were advised of multiple winners (that don't show up on my overall record on VI), including the Crimson Tide -6.5 or 7 in the first quarter, -12.5 in the first half and the Tide's team total 'over' 23.5 in the first half, it's 14th consecutive win over Tennessee came at a high price.

One of the nation's most explosive players in WR Jaylen Waddle was lost to a season-ending ankle injury. Fortunately for Nick Saban's club, it remains loaded at the WR positions.

It took a minute for Ohio State to get going, but the Buckeyes nonetheless covered a big number in a season-opening home win over Nebraska.

Georgia and Florida stood pat at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, after open dates.

Oregon, which still hasn't started playing, replaces Penn State at No. 6.

The Nittany Lions lost a heartbreaker at Indiana in overtime by inches (or perhaps less than one-half inch?), dropping them to No. 14. Perhaps that downgrade is a tad harsh, but PSU can get right Saturday vs. Ohio State and immediately propel back into the Top 10. By the way, the Hoosiers break into our Top 25 at No. 16.

The rest of the Top 10 looks like this (in order): No. 7 Texas A&M, followed by Wisconsin, Oklahoma State and Michigan.

The Aggies were off this past weekend, but the Badgers looked great in a 45-7 home win over Illinois. The Illini got its only points on a scoop-and-score from its defense. With Jack Coan out, redshirt freshman QB Graham Mertz went off with incredible numbers and provided head coach Paul Chryst with one of "those good problems' to consider when Coan is ready to return from a foot injury.

Mike Gundy's Oklahoma State squad picked up a huge home win over Iowa State to stay undefeated and take sole possession of first place in the Big 12, while Michigan posted a double-digit road win at Minnesota.

Our next five from 10-15 are No. 11 Kansas State, which easily covered in a blowout win over KU, followed by Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Penn State and BYU.

Why a downgrade on the Fighting Irish after a blowout win at Pitt?

Well, for starters, Panthers QB Kenny Pickett, who was tops in the nation in passing yards before missing a Week 7 game at Miami, didn't play again. Furthermore, Notre Dame's five opponents have a combined record of 6-22 vs. FBS competition.

Cincinnati put together its most impressive performance of the season, trouncing previously-unbeaten SMU by a 42-13 count as a short road underdog. The Bearcats are No. 17 in front of Miami, North Carolina and USC. After an open date, Arkansas remains at No. 21 and can get over .500 (although the Hogs should be 3-1 if not for that controversial loss at Auburn on a blown call) and make a big splash with a win Saturday as a double-digit underdog at Texas A&M.

Virginia Tech fell to No. 22 after losing at Wake Forest.

LSU had to play a true freshman QB in TJ Finley, yet it still put up 52 points and prevented South Carolina from winning a third consecutive game. Texas is No. 24 and Boston College joins the fray at No. 25 after destroying Georgia Tech as a 3.5-point home favorite.

Colorado State visits Fresno State to start off the next college football weekend in a pairing of teams with new head coaches this season.

How to Handicap Colorado State-Fresno State

The Bulldogs were West division champions in 2017 and 2018 and won the Mountain West title in 2018. Last season the team slipped to 4-8 after going a combined 22-6 the prior two seasons.

Last Saturday, Fresno State hosted Hawai?i to open the season and wound up with a 34-19 defeat. It was a competitive game much of the way with Hawai?i up 17-13 at halftime and Fresno State within eight twice in the second half before a late Warriors touchdown put the game away.

Fresno State lost the yardage battle 552-409 and the turnover battle 4-1. It was the first game for Hawai?i under Todd Graham and the Warriors surprised with 53 rushing attempts for 323 yards on the ground. Playing from behind much of the way, Fresno State leaned on Jake Haener in the passing game, connecting for some big plays with 289 yards on only 17 completions but with three interceptions.

Colorado State didn?t play last week as the opener with New Mexico was called off with Covid-19 issues on New Mexico?s side. There are no plans to reschedule that game and the Rams will now open on the road a week later coming off a 4-8 2019 season. After a 1-5 start the Rams did win three games in a row in the conference season last year before losing the final three games in mostly competitive results.

Last season Colorado State finished only -14 in MWC scoring differential despite a 3-5 record, likewise Fresno State finished 2-6 while only -17 in scoring as both teams have some positive indicators for improvement in 2020.

Coaching Changes

Colorado State hired longtime Georgia assistant Mike Bobo ahead of the 2015 season and after three straight 7-5 regular seasons concluding with bowl losses the Rams turned in back-to-back losing seasons in 2018 and 2019.

Bobo missed some time ahead of the 2019 season with health issues and was ultimately fired after the Rams finished 4-8 last season. He completed five years at 28-35 including 20-20 in conference play as the Rams didn?t approach the success Jim McElwain had in 2013 and 2014.

The Rams wound up hiring Steve Addazio to take over the program last winter, shortly after Addazio was somewhat surprisingly released by Boston College. With geographical challenges in the ACC Addazio went 44-44 over seven seasons with the Eagles and despite a 22-34 overall ACC mark, his teams were at least 4-4 five times and made bowl games six of his seven seasons.

He was unemployed just over a week even though his ties and coaching history has been exclusively on the east coast. Long-time assistant Chuck Heater is his defensive coordinator with Heater an assistant at Colorado State for two seasons and at Colorado for six seasons in the 1990s, while most recently an assistant at Florida last season. Joey Lynch is the new offensive coordinator after climbing the ranks as an assistant at Ball State the past decade.

Fresno State also is in its first season with a new head coach as Jeff Tedford?s second stint at Fresno State ended after three seasons as he stepped down citing health reasons. Tedford revived the program with an incredible turnaround from inheriting a team that went 1-11 in 2016 to 10-4 in 2017. His offensive coordinator in 2017 and 2018 was Kalen DeBoer, who was brought back to Fresno with the opening last winter.

DeBoer was a head coach at NAIA Sioux Falls from 2005-2009, going 67-3 with three NAIA Championships. He jumped up as a coordinator at FCS Southern Illinois and then to FBS at Eastern Michigan before joining Tedford in Fresno. Last season he was lured away to be the OC and QB Coach at Indiana where the Hoosiers went 8-5 and were the second most productive offense in the Big Ten averaging 444 yards per game.

Betting Analysis ? Rams

2019: 4-8 S/U, 6-6 ATS, 4/8 O/U

The first game of the season can offer an opportunity for mistakes but it also can be an advantage, particularly for a team in a coaching change.

There isn?t film on Colorado State right now under Addazio as the Rams weren?t able to play last week in the scheduled opener vs. New Mexico, a more favorable matchup where Addazio?s team may have been able to work out some kinks. Addazio was 6-1 S/U and 3-3-1 ATS in season openers at Boston College including a notable upset hosting Virginia Tech to open last season.

Last season Boston College rushed for nearly 3,300 yards on 5.0 yards per carry, rushing more than twice as often as they passed. Addazio teams have always preferred to run but a quarterback injury plus having NFL draft pick A.J. Dillon in the backfield likely led to a greater tilt to the ground in 2019.

One can assume Patrick O?Brien will be starting at quarterback as the incumbent that posted adequate numbers last season after now South Carolina quarterback Collin Hill was injured. Addazio hasn?t made that official however as Temple transfer Todd Centeio joined the team this summer. Last year?s top rusher Mavin Kinsey has graduated but senior Marcus McElroy returns and should be in line to lead the running game.

Colorado State and Boston College both struggled with run defense last season ranking 102nd and 93rd respectively on a per carry basis as that is an area where Fresno State was stronger last season. Addazio?s Boston College defense allowed 6.3 yards per play last season for 107th nationally though having to play both Clemson and Notre Dame on the road contributed heavily to those results.

Betting Analysis - Bulldogs

2019: 4-8 S/U, 4-7-1 ATS, 8/4 O/U
2020: 0-1 S/U, 0-1 ATS, 0/1 O/U

Expectations are high for the Fresno State offense given how successful the team was with DeBoer in 2017 and 2018 and the big numbers that he produced in a breakthrough season for Indiana last year. The start of last week?s game couldn?t have gone better as Hawai?i fumbled on the opening kickoff and five plays later the Bulldogs reached the end zone, including Haener delivering a big play on 3rd-and-13 to avoid having to force a long field goal try. Fresno State had turnovers on the next two possessions before uneven results the rest of the way as Hawai?i eventually pulled away.

Ronnie Rivers led Fresno State with 79 rushing yards but the Bulldogs gained just 3.2 yards per rush and were outrushed 323-120 by Hawai?i. Haener has decent mobility and rushed 13 times last week as the Washington transfer took his first snaps since a few token appearances for the Huskies in 2018. Marcus McMaryion had terrific results for Fresno State in 2017 and 2018 before the production slipped last season under senior Jorge Reyna.

Rivers was the team?s leading rusher in 2019 with 899 yards while averaging 5.1 yards per carry and reaching the end zone 13 times. Rivers was also the team?s second leading receiver last season, only four catches behind top receiver Zane Pope, who didn?t play last week and might be out for a few more weeks to take a toll on the passing game options for the Bulldogs.

Fresno State was the top defensive scoring team by a wide margin in the MWC in both 2017 and 2018 before allowing 255 points in 2019, 168 more points than the season before. The defensive coordinator this season is William Inge who followed DeBoer after serving as the special teams coordinator and a linebackers coach at Indiana for the past seven seasons.

Head-to-Head

Colorado State leads this series 10-5 with a 9-6 ATS mark since 1992.

Last year?s meeting was the first between these teams since 2016 and Colorado State has won six of the past seven with a 5-2 ATS mark going back to 2003.

Fresno State has lost three straight home meetings between these teams, last winning in Fresno in 2002.

These teams also met in bowl action in 2008 with a narrow New Mexico Bowl win for Colorado State.

Last Season: Colorado State (+13.5) 41 at Fresno State 31

These teams met in late October with Fresno State a nearly two-touchdown favorite at home.

Coming off a pair of division titles the Bulldogs were 3-3 but the losses included an eight-point loss at USC and a double-overtime loss to Minnesota.

Colorado State was just 2-5 at the time with several lopsided losses but they had two weeks in-between games following a win at New Mexico.

Colorado State jumped out to a 14-0 lead but Fresno State managed to tie the game early in the third quarter and went into the fourth quarter with a 28-24 lead. The game would be tied 31-31 a few minutes into the fourth before Colorado State seemed to blow its chance at the upset with an interception in the end zone.

The Rams defense got the ball right back with its own interception a few plays later however, handing the offense a short field. Colorado State cashed in with a touchdown and then after stopping Fresno State on downs they sealed the win with a late field goal to win 41-31. Colorado State posted a 500-388 yardage advantage with most of that edge coming in the passing game.

LaRussa won World Series with the A?s/Cardinals; he last managed in 2011, in St Louis. He is already in the Hall of Fame as a manager.

In his playing days, LaRussa was an infield prospect until he hurt his arm; he pinch-hit for the A?s in their first-ever home game in Oakland, in 1968.

I remember that when we went there, we always left with a smile on our face, and we could see better. Henry Berben was a good guy. RIP, sir.
