So here's the story that's burning up my little city like.....well, a mighty conflagration.
I've heard the story from a good friend who doesn't have the god given sense to make up good bullshit, and also from a banker friend who has actually seen the Golden Ticket.
My friend was shooting the shit with a local store owner a couple days back, when another customer walked in. This guy also knew the owner, and started to tell him his story.
It seems this guy was in Vegas back in late August, when the St Louis Cardinals had their huge fall from grace. They had dropped like a stone, and were about 10 games back of the Brewers for the Central, and a good pace off of the Wild Card, as well.
He was at Mandalay Bay, and they posted the Cards at just under 1000-1 to win the World Series. As you all know, they needed a 'perfect storm' to have any shot at even making the playoffs. As you also know, they are currently in the NLCS.
Well, he plopped $10 on this 'throw away' wager, just because, from what people are saying.
Fast forward to Wednesday, and the coffee chat. Now, the guy is trying to figure out some kind of "out" for his ticket. It seems that the store owner ponied up $2000 to buy it.
Now, I don't know what the odds were before the series started, but I was told by the guy telliong me this story, that the Cards could be had for 6-1 to win it all. If that is true......$2000 seems like a bad investment.
At any rate, I think the guy probably feels a little better after tonight's game, than he did after losing last night!
I'm sure he plans on making a nice hedge if they beat the Crew, but for now......it's making a good story!
(I was wondering if he would be taxed on this ticket like a horse race, due to the odds?........anyone know)
