He was an asshole, too, but the cop did the right thing.

Let's just hope you don't have to worry about an "american citizen" shooting a family member in the face some day, and the police saying, "Yeah, we saw that guy walking around, but what could we do?"

Because I'm sure your family's response would be: "At least you protected his rights........don't worry about it".

:0008

You can't argue with stupid analogies.

But I'll try:

I hope one day you dont have a family member who is obeying all laws, but a police officer decides to lie and make up charges and takes them for a drive and assaults them, because of some more made up bullshit, than that cop shots your family member in DA FACE, with sperm, or a bullet, because your family member was allegedly holding a weapon that the officer planted, sort of in the way of Ransom, because the police officer needed a big coller for a recent promotion so he could continue to support his new hot girlfriend, and since he was gay and was hiding his gayness from he needed to take it out on lawful citizens, in this case your family member. At which point I dont think your families response would be "Well, at least you were able to ID him.... dont worry about it." I digress.

On the course!
Here you go, Shooter.

The Hilton paid us the money, we split it up between the team. Then they changed the rules after the fact. The money was gone and we told them that. They never pressed the issue......it was a 3 way tie, all 3 teams had the same record.....this was 7 years ago.........now get over it.

Not that I owe you an explanation but here goes. There were 6 of us involved. Johnny Detroit put up the money and I put the team together. 5 guys from all over the United States. Once Johnny got the money he divided it up between the 6 of us 1/6 each minus the entry fee. Then after the Hilton changed their minds and asked for the money back all of us decided we had won it fair and square and voted to keep what they had already told us we had won. So we told the Hilton we were keeping the money and that was the end of it. The Hilton never said another word. So it was 6 guys making the final decision not just me.

Also, the part about them changing the rules 'after the fact'. I seriously doubt they would still be having a contest, had that been the case.

Pointing out a rule that had been overlooked, and changing the rules are not the same thing. (Unless you are trying to justify stealing)

rule #1..."when someone can shoot you legally, you don`t mess with them"

rule #2..."smart people don?t mess with cops(idiots do)... smart people lawyer up if they are wrongly arrested". ...

ya see...they`re cops..you`re not.....that means you don`t get to decide....

when a cop tells you to fo something you are along for the ride and can deal with it later....

that is,unless you`re a total moron that has an authority complex.....in that case you get what you asked for......

I think the Hilton Corp screwed up. They paid us then after the fact realized they screwed up a week later. A week later the money had been divided up and there was no way the 6 guys were giving their part of the split back...........it was 7 years ago so some of the details are foggy, but that's how I remember it.

I would think the team would have been aware of the rules in case of a tie. I know I would read the rules thoroughly if there was that much Jack on the line and the leaders were bunched up. Its similar to a bank clerk overpaying you and you realize it. Its bad karma and your universe shifts to try and correct itself. You wouldn't kick your golf ball from behind a tree.
I know it's a tough spot since your buddies were undoubtedly saying, "fuck the Hilton. They can afford it." Interesting read -- Thanks.

No comment on the above. I'd pay to be a part of the team. For the record I'd just take Senor Cappers plays and turn them in.

So, am I in?

Also, YYZ I'd like to send you an email. Please ask Jack for my email or could I please request yours from Jack?

I'll admit I have an individual vs. corporate approach to personal business. Individuals I treat as I would want to be treated but when the rare event occurs that a corporation has incorrectly awarded me something in my favor I keep it. I figure it's karma in my favor.

Examples that have happened to me:

Individual:
If a cashier incorrectly gives me too much change I return it. If I find a wallet I return it.

Corporate:
If I see that I was charged for 3 nights at a hotel when I actually stayed 4 nights I don't call them up. If they figure it out fine but that's the company's accounting mistake and I've been on the wrong side of enough hotel accounting mistakes to say, 'let them figure it out'.

that's a perfect example here actually. So if the hotel calls you up a week later and points out there error and asks for the money, do you give it to them or say "sorry, i already spent that money"

I just read through the whole thread:facepalm:

I have to say I am on the boys side here, especially if Hilton had no further recourse against you after sending the check for the winnings

I'd offer my cut of the error (leave it up to teammates regarding theirs) but point out it was Hilton's error and ask for free entry the following year or some kind of recompense for the error and hassle. Regardless of whether they sweeten the deal I'd still return it though.

Out of the 6 guys on my team not one wanted to give the money back. Hilton didn't press the issue either. No lawyers were involved which surprised me. I think the Hilton wanted to keep it quiet??

It was probably unfair of me to make that statement since I wasn't in your shoes. The circumstances are squirrely and I think a lot depends on the tone of Hilton's approach to you guys after the fact. And I agree that they wouldn't have wanted any publicity shining on their error. If I had given it back and then saw how they had no problem letting everyone else keep it I might even go back to them and say WTF.

This would imply that the money was asked to be returned.
