Baltimore and Ray Lewis are now fired up for Sunday. I'm taking this into consideration for Sunday and leaning towards Baltimore to quiet the Steelers at home . . . Quote of the week:

Plaxico Burres:

"We beat those guys up physically. We know it," Burress said. "All we have to do is go down there and beat them up again this time."

Response by Shannon Sharpe:

"I'm not even going to talk about Plaxico. I'm not even going to dignify what he said with a response," Sharpe said. "If Hines Ward would have said that, as physical as he's played the game, OK, I can at least lend some credence to that one. But Plexiglas, no."

. . . Fuel to the fire, this should be a good one

Associated Press

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, furious over statements by two Pittsburgh Steelers, plans to take out his anger Sunday against the AFC Central leaders.

Lewis was particularly annoyed over a comment by Steelers running back Jerome Bettis, who was quoted in a magazine article as saying Cincinnati fourth-year linebacker Takeo Spikes is as good as Lewis, but doesn't get the same notoriety because he has a lesser supporting cast.

"Jerome saying Takeo Spikes is better than me? Let's go find out," Lewis said. "They have to come here in three, four days regardless of what's coming out of their mouths. Tell him to tape that groin up and come see me at PSINet."

Bettis missed last week's game against the New York Jets because of a groin injury, but is expected to play in Sunday night's showdown between the defending Super Bowl champs and the Steelers (10-2), who can clinch the division title with a victory.

Bettis, told of Lewis' rage Wednesday, said he did not intend to slight Lewis, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl MVP.

"I just said (Spikes) is as good an athlete as Ray Lewis, he just doesn't have the talent around him," Bettis said. "I'm trying to compliment another guy. So he brings that into a Steelers story? I guess they're jumping on anything right now."

In the first meeting between the teams, the Ravens won 13-10 when Pittsburgh's Kris Brown missed four field goals. But wide receiver Plaxico Burress said this week that although they lost, the Steelers knocked around the Super Bowl champs.

"We beat those guys up physically. We know it," Burress said. "All we have to do is go down there and beat them up again this time."

Lewis was enraged by the comment.

"It kind of ticks you off. You want to just play football, but these guys want to trash talk," Lewis said. "You talk about what Plaxico Burress said, you talk about what Jerome Bettis said, man, that's garbage."

Lewis defended himself and the Baltimore defense, which is currently ranked second behind the Steelers but last year set an NFL record for fewest points allowed over a 16-game season.

"I've always said you don't have to respect me, but don't ever disrespect me. For those guys to say what they're saying now, it's ignorant," Lewis said. "They have a good defense this year. I'm not even going to say great. But we've been there, we've done this before.

"There's no person on this defense, first team or second team, that I would trade for any one of their starters."

The Steelers took exception to that comment.

"That's good, cause we wouldn't take none of their guys neither," Pittsburgh linebacker Joey Porter said. "I don't need none of their guys over here playing for us neither."

Lewis' scorn was provoked by Ravens tight end Shannon Sharpe, who told the linebacker what Bettis and Burress said. Sharpe, one of Lewis' closest friends on the team, also thought Bettis' comparison of Spikes and Lewis was way off base.

"That's like saying, `Dude, Where's My Car' is just as good as `Titanic.' At some point in time, you've got to be realistic," Sharpe said. "I don't mean no disrespect to Takeo, because Takeo Spikes is a great football player, but he's not Ray Lewis. Let's not fool ourselves."

Sharpe didn't much care for Burress' comment either, particularly because Burress has a reputation for being far less physical than the Steelers' other wide receiver, Hines Ward.

"I'm not even going to talk about Plaxico. I'm not even going to dignify what he said with a response," Sharpe said. "If Hines Ward would have said that, as physical as he's played the game, OK, I can at least lend some credence to that one. But Plexiglas, no."

Steelers coach Bill Cowher moved quickly to prevent the battle of words from escalating.

"Anybody who knows Jerome Bettis knows he has a lot of respect for Ray Lewis, the best linebacker in the game today," Cowher said. "Those two know each other well."

I think Baltimore is grasping for straws. They're trying to use this as a rallying point; they better use something because Pitt kicked their a-- everywhere except on the scoreboard in the first meeting. I heard Bettis was mainly talking about Spikes, and the remark was to say how good he was; not as a putdown to Ray Lewis.

I heard Seragosa last night encouraging BALT fans to follow people wearing PIT colors into the bathroom and "take care of business."

It was, but Ray didn't take it that way. Shannon Sharpe made sure of that. Baltimore is searching and this will be great bulletin board material throughout the week. The Steelers are playing great football, but what Plaxico said will sit heavily on the minds of this Baltimore defense. Sure they haven't played as good as last year and as you know in the NFL, every week is a new week. Just because the Steelers man-handled the Ravens in the first game, you should keep your mouth shut and let your play on Sunday do the talking. Instead Plaxico runs his mouth off and that might come back to haunt them. The Steelers need to put the ball in the end-zone this game or it will be a long day for them. Brown looks shaky and even though I took the Steelers last week, this guy missed an extra point and easy field goal and luckily it didn't come back to bite them. All I know is that this will be a game to watch Sunday.

Sometimes the hype works - sometimes it doesn't.

Scenario 1 - Baltimore uses the hype to become better focused but still plays within their gameplan. This can only benefit the defense in my opinion and Pittsburgh's offense kind of plods along at best anyway. The Raven's offense still has to put up some numbers against a very good Steelers defense.

Scenario 2 - The Ravens get overhyped. Cheap shots and late hits take center stage, mental mistakes multiply and Pittsburgh moves downfield due to penalties.

Scenario 3 - Siragusa ends up in the men's room in the middle of a giant brawl. He becomes the target of a class action suit by Pittsburgh fans and finally settles for $15 million and is barred from public restrooms for 3 years.

the problem with playing against pitt is when you have the ball. there is becomes a liability, more so if your offense is ineffective.

i don't expect pitt will run thru the balt defensive line like they did vs. the jets, but still, they will get enough points from balt's off. blunders to come away with the win.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see this game as being any different from the first time around. Neither team has a great offense and with the war of words being fully waged, I'm looking for an awesome defensive battle and a game that doesn't make it past the mid 20's. I think both teams will be a bit conservative (as usual) and simply try and play good, field position football. Also both teams more apt to have to settle for 3 then they are to punch it in when given the chance. All that being said, give me the under LARGE -- at least 6 units, maybe 8. Will have to decide on that but this game for me is under or nothing! Good luck all.

PIT will go home with their tails between their legs. count on it. BUT, they will have another excuse this time too. "bettis wasn't healthy", just like, "if so and so didn't miss all those field goals". well, guess what? you have to make the FG's to win. They didn't and didn't. bottom line; ravens get the job done on the scoreboard and that's what counts.

ravens are back to not getting any respect. they're hardly mentioned by ANYBODY to go to the superbowl again. guess what? they're the only team in the afc that can beat pit and i guess they have to do it 3 times this year just like they did to tenn last year.

you WILL see madjack wearing purple at the superbowl party again. count on it!

I love it!!!

DON'T be dissing his RAVENS now... we need him focused on other games, that one is hours away!

Personally, I think all the trash talking don't matter, I agree with MJ, BALT is gonna take care of business at home tonite. Can't see them allowing PITT to stay within a few missed FG's from winning this one...

PITT can go home, KNOWING they were without their best player the BUS, and HOPE, PRAY, BEG GOD they get homefield vs BALT in the playoffs. IF not, JACK will be wearing the "right" colors come SUPERBOWL SUNDAY.

antonio- probably no wager. i'm going to mad enough if the ravens lose. i won't be able to stand it if i lose money on top of it. know what i mean?

ravens only have had incentive like THIS for 2 other games this year. the game in Denver and the first game vs. TEN at home. the chips are down and the ravens will rake the pot, baby!

Jack.....love the site.....love the Ravens defense.....like Ismail and Sharpe......no running game and no proven QB = no repeat Superbowl Championship

Oakland will beat Baltimore because Balt can't expose Oakland's weakness: rushing defense

But it will make for a great playoff game

Good Luck to all and keep the Goose away from the All you can eat Buffets
