I had to put down my best friend yesterday and its killing me. I have had this dog since he was a pup.

HPIM0896.JPG

Sat morning about 2am he woke me up by barking so I got up and let him out. He puked as soon as he hit the grass. When I let him back in he wouldnt lay down. All he would do was just stand and not move. I knew something major was wrong. The vets opened up at 8am so we were there right when the doors opened. He was in the back of the car and I couldnt get him out. The vets had to come out and carry him in.

He had a bloated stomach and they couldnt relieve the pressure. The vet said its common in big chested dogs and no one knows the reason why it happens. He showed me the x-rays and his stomach was so bloated that it was crushing his other organs. He said when this happens it cuts off the bloood flow and the other organs start to die off. They tried to relieve the pressure but couldnt because his stomach had twisted itself in a knot. They even stuck a needle in him to relieve the pressure but that didnt work.

So I made the hardest decision I have ever had to do.He was put down.

Every where I look and every thing I do reminds me of him.I tried to keep busy by pulling the motor out of my demo car but it ended up being ...work on the car for 30 min ...come in the house and cry for 30 min. This went on for the whole day.

I know what I did was the right thing for him but that dosent even begin to ease the pain I am feeling. He was 10 yrs old and I had him since he was a pup.

This whole thing made me change how I view life because if I had known the night before that it was going to be his last night he would have eaten like a king. Nothing but steaks and beers. (He loved beer but would only get the backwash out of the cans because I knew to much wasnt good for him)

If I could only turn back the hands of time to relive the last few hours with him..

RIP....Bubba... 1995-2005

Bubba, sorry to hear that, looks like a pretty smart dog. Had to do the same exact thing to my dog last august, so I defininetly feel your pain. You made the right decision even though ur probably doubting urself right now, like i did. Just hang in there time will heal everything. What i did after about 3 months i went to the local humane socety and got me another dog similiar.

Prayers are w/u.

bubba,
I can feel your pain. We've had some great experiences with "mans best friend" over the decades too. Always tough to have to put one down, but like ripken said ...you did the right thing. I thank God for having had those experiences with our pets, some folks unfortunately go through life without ever having that special relationship with "mans best friend".
God Bless,
TT

I doubt anyone, who has never gone thru this, can fully understand your grief.

When it came time for me to put my dog down, I couldn't do it. I asked my wife if she would take him to the vet and she also couldn't force herself. I finally called my dad to come over and help us out.....he came and did what we couldn't do.

It was one of the hardest things I ever had to face (and I've been to Vietnam). I vowed to never say my dogs name again and I still have his collar....since 1986.

Time will heal your sorrow, but memories of your time together will last your lifetime.

All of us dog owners and lovers who have ever experienced this great loss share in your sorrow and grief. My son has a female doberman who resembles your loved one very much. We have had her since 95 and she has brought so much joy to our lives. Jake DeNiro lost his companion last week and I will share the same with you as I did him. Don't know if you've ever heard of the poem "The Rainbow Bridge." If not you can look it up on the internet. It will put more tears in your eyes, but at the same time is comforting. Hope it helps.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it. That was a great poem.

I know as the days go on the feelings of loss will subside. Im just gonna take each day as it comes.

I know what I did was the right thing to do and I feel good knowing that I was able to be by his side at the very end.

Bubba, I know it's a tough thing to do, but better to put him down rather than make him suffer. We have a fine vet in my home town that sends sympathy cards to owners who's friends he has to put down. Like the posts here it help relieve the pain knowing someone whom you know only as a name on a web site share your grief. Ciao My Friend Il Duce

believe me, I feel your pain. Had to put my Bullmastiff down June 15th and there hasn't been a day that I haven't shed tears.....even now as I write this. I amazed my family and some friends because I wrote a 3 page poem of him and the whole ordeal. I'm not that type of person, but I found it in me to come up with it... One day last week when I got home I was so upset that my wife had come upstairs and said "I'm calling the doctor"....I couldn't even answer her, just shook my head no. No one has ever seen me like this.....I'm a wreck. On Friday my neighbour's next door felt they had the green light to talk to me, and they did. I thanked them for giving me my space and dealing with his loss on my own. I left the poem with them and the husband came back over crying, gave me a hug and said his wife was in the house crying. I also wanted to post a picture of him on here but don't know how.....My heart goes out to you, and as I say, I'm still in tears after 13 days....it's going to take a while. From my family to you and yours.... :grouphug: Take Care
