Welcome to the first installment of the rest of my life. The days of me working for anyone end on Friday, at least for now. I have paid off all my expenses for the next six months, and will attempt my version of the American Dream. Gambling for a living and writing about it. I don't have much of a safety net, when the six months are up I will have to get a real job if I'm not making money. Another thing I have to deal with is that like alot of us on here, I have always had issues with compulsive gambling and or bankroll discipline. Can a leopard change his spots? We will see. I toyed with moving to vegas for this venture and reserve the right to do so at a later point, but for now I'm keeping it lean in a 1 bedroom studio about 4 miles from the Atlantic City strip . The question has been raised for a long time on here if anyone could make it as professional gambler. I personally think it can be done. That said I highly doubt it can be done by me. The only thing I do know is that I'm going to have some laughs and drinks along the way. For those interested in a roller coaster ride to keep myself gainfully unemployed stay tuned at Madjacks for an all access pass into my journey. I'll post all my action here including what online tables I'll be playing at so you can come watch me crash and burn or play against me. A lot of guys have entertained thoughts of doing this. Now you will all finally get to know someone dumb enough to try it.

I don't have a job. Haven't in ten years. It can definitely be done.

I would highly suggest learning poker though. That's the only way you are gonna do it.

If you are gonna be playing blackjack or table games, you should just give up now. CANNOT be beaten. Or if you are attempting just sports, you better be more disciplined than ever, and it doesn't hurt to run well either.

Either way, gl in your quest and wish you success.

Good Luck Clem, I agree with the Dodger, the only way it can be done is in poker.

Madjack bankroll is going to be a click or two north of BMW M3. Still deciding how Im going to divide it up between the ponies, poker, and sports. I need my head examined yet i never have felt more at ease in my life.

Dodger Blue.
I'd love to talk offline about this. No table games will be played!!
Strictly horses, hold'em, and Sports.

If I do play a table game it will come out of an entertainment budget, if I ever get that far.

I've been pretty successful betting just sports each year. Last year made a few thousand dollars doing it. If you play offshore, make sure you use a check cashing service if you don't want to report it to the IRS.

Everyone is right about the tables and slots. A waste of time and money, I don't even play them when I go to Vegas anymore. No need to, I just bet more at the Sportsbook instead when I'm in Vegas and then the wife gets her hands on the cash :cursin: :cursin:

Clem, you can get my email from jack if you have any poker related questions. I'll be happy to steer you in right direction and try and answer any questions.

Sounds like you are going about this at least the right way for a while. Like Jack said, make sure you have expenses taken care of for a while. Keep your head up, and you never gonna get anywhere in life without taking chances. Just make sure you never tilt in whatever you are doing in life.

good luck clem. i wish you the best. you obviously know much more than me about gambling. the only thing i would say is be careful when you get that hunch and you want to lay alot of money on a single bet.
it has hurt me or my friends more than it has helped.
gl again and keep us posted.

Wishing you the best Clem. You know the odds are long, but I admire your trek and wish I had the nerve to do it myself.

Money management is obviously the key and that includes self control. If you can't do that you can't possibly win, but I am sure you know that.

My worry about poker is that it will occupy too much of your time handicapping. Poker is a grind, but can be done at a profit. The problem is the time involved if you are playing sports.

Hope the horses go okay. I spent the better part of my life and probably way too much money with the nags. I developed excellent contacts with jockeys, trainers, owners, and clockers. It was still impossible to make money in the Southern California circuit. So I hope you are playing some of the tracks where the bigger fields can lead to profits.

Anxious to hear your tales and love the idea of writing about it. Wish you all the luck in the world.

Heaven, oh!!, this isn't it?!
Clem,
I sincerely wish you the best. Your posts and analysis are always insightful. Are you going to keep a running total somewhere(one of the threads). Remember that money management is key.

When I first saw this thread, this was all I could think about, was the old "Sea Hag" LMAO :mj07: And I had this vision of Clem's note on the dresser saying; "Honey (hag), I'm off to follow my dream, so dont look me up. Here is some cash to keep you from bitchin, and you wont have to deal with that foul stench from your sock drawer! :scared "

GL buddy,
Franky :)

GL Clem.

Always found your posts very insightful and entertaining, and I'm sure the next 6 months will be more of the same. Wish you much luck in your endeavor. I myself like the phrase "if you have a hunch, bet a bunch," but that can be a real bankroll buster.

Not true.

Handicapping / betting some sports is much easier than playing poker.

And I'm a decent poker player.

Ah...off to pursue the gamblers dream. :mj08: :mj08:

Clem, you've been around long enough to know the pitfalls.....I doubt any suggestions in this thread will cause you to change your mind.

I sincerely wish you the all the best, and I especially look forward to the periodic accounting of your journey here in the forum. You have a unique way of expressing yourself and I'm sure your titillating style will entertain us thru the "dog days of winter"....

Go get'um big guy....and since you're going to be pretty busy in the coming weeks, could you send me the phone number of your "niece" so she doesn't get too lonely..... :brows:

PS..what happened to your upcoming book on roulette?

I posted this elsewhere, but it's worth repeating in this thread.

Clem if you are gonna play a significant amount of poker on-line you MUST get a rakeback deal. It is not just calculated on the amount raked from the pots you win and you wouldn't believe how much it adds up.

I can't say it loud enough, GET A RAKEBACK DEAL!

My only suggestion is monitor alchohol consumption.
It leads to clouded judgement
