Out of respect for ImFeklhr's post & against my better judgement, I thought that I would start a debate about the upcoming Presidential Election & hopefully without the name calling....

Before I start, I want to give some of my positions on a few issues, so hopefully I can avoid be labeled, other than the Independent that I think I am....

I am pro-choice, except late term abortions....I believe in stem cell research....I don't care if gays want to get married or not. I feel if a person contributes to society (pays taxes, votes, etc), he/she deserves the same rights as everybody else....I believe in capital punishment & a strong military, but it seems to me nation-building has not worked successfully since the Marshall Plan (after WW2)....I believe the terrorists do not deserve any rights afforded to citizens of the US & I have no problem with water-boarding....

Over the years I have voted for the Democrat way more than I have for the Republican....But I really dislike the present leadership of the Democratic Party....

In reverse order, this is who I have voted for....

McCain, Bush, Gore, Clinton, Clinton, nobody in 1984 & 1988, Reagan, Carter, McGovern, Humphrey....& was a volunteer for McCarthy in the 1968 Democratic primary....

The bottom line for me is that Obama was elected to fix the economy & has not done that....He came into office with a very high approval rating & with people really looking for him to succeed....In the first 2 years of his Presidency & with both houses Democratically controlled, he did nothing about trying to fix the economy....Instead he took on the Health Care issue, which wasn't the major issue that the American people wanted him to tackle....

I admit that Obama took over a bad situation, but that is the reason why he or any other person is elected during bad times....To fix the problems & not give excuses....

I may be off with a couple of the numbers, but this is the longest period of time that the unemployment rate has been over 8% since the end of WW2....One out of every 6 black people is unemployed....In 2006& 2007, about 90% of college graduates found jobs....Under Obama the number is about 56%....When Obama took office, the national debt was around $10 trillion, now it's about $16 trillion....He appointed a bi-partisan panel to come up with ideas to lower the debt, & because he didn't like what they proposed, he just ignored it....In his 8 years in office, Bush increased the debt by over $4.8trillion....In his 3 years, Obama has increased the debt by $4.9 trillion & I feel that he doesn't care if the debt keeps rising....Also under Obama, I read that 87 million Americans are no longer looking for work & if you add the number of people who have stopped looking for a job or who are working part-time but want a full-time job is included (underemployment rate), the unemployment rate is about 19%....Also since Obama took office, the gas prices have doubled & I don't care if it is his fault or not, I want the prices lowered & I blame him as I would with any President....& I also heard that the misery index is pretty high & feel that the American public feel the same way about things as they did when Carter was in office....There are more things i don't like about Obama, but am getting tired typing....LOL....

I welcome all comments, but please let's try avoid the name calling....

It's May, Presidential election is in November.
At some point this forum is going to light up with activity. :popcorn2
Better it be constructive than destructive.

I am totally undecided myself. There are a few things about Obama I like, then there are more I don't.

I am 36 almost 37...I voted for Bush, Dole, Bush, Bush, McCain and Romney 2012

I agree with most of your points, like pro choice except late term i think it should be paid for in full by the potential mother, not the government, stem cell research and strong military...

I think marriage should be only one male and one female  If your gay I do not care just do not think they should be able to marry..

I also want to legalize marijuana and tax it

Good discussion ar :0074

Great post, Al. I agree with most of what you wrote.

* I do not support gay marriage. The only marriage that should be legal is between a man and a woman.

* I think welfare should be cut back and much tighter restraints be put on who receives welfare. Each welfare recipient should be tested randomly for drugs and if they fail, they forfeit their welfare privilige permanantly.

* Cap the payout on welfare on the number of children that people have so that they don't continue to have more kids that they can't support on their own. Intentionally exploiting the welfare system based on having more kids needs to be stopped.

* I do not support tax cuts for the wealthy. We have a serious debt in this country and everyone, including the wealthy needs to contribute.

* Government spending by the current Dems is compeltely irresponsible and out of control. I too don't think Obama cares one iota about the spending crises he's created. He has no concept of money.

* A strong military is a must in this unstable, radical world of dictatorships and Muslim influence. We have to be able to protect the U.S.

* Take a strong look at all of the foreign aid and financial support that we give to other countries. We have enough debt here, our economy needs fixing, and we have poverty here. The U.S. comes first, and then if we have money left over, we can help other countries.

* Offer federally mandated english speaking courses for those that cannot speak english. There is nothing wrong with being bilingual, but EVERYONE who lives in the U.S. should be required to learn and speak english.

* Obama has failed to turn around the economy and lower the unemployment rate. He's had his opportunity and failed.

* Require tougher reporting guidelines for those who are unemployed that are drawing unemployment compensation. They need to be out actively looking for a job every day and not being lazy depending on a government handout.

* Fix the cost of rising gas prices in America. There is no reason why gas prices should be this high.

Obama needs to go! He's failed this country as president and it's time for a change! :toast:

A great post Al. I agree with most of what you say and I am very disappointed in Obama. But, I think much of the problem with the economy is because he has allowed his hands to be tied because of the Republicans.
True, he had two years to get things done and why he did not use that time is basically why I have my problems with him.
But, with the Republicans not allowing anything through has stalled anything he wanted to do.
If we vote in Romney we will just be putting back in place the same policies that caused the problems in the first place. Only this time they will be multiplied.
As a country we are in a tough spot. Vote in the guy who has not been able to put in place anything to get us out of trouble we are in or vote in a guy who embraces the very policies that got us into the mess in the first place!
