...is it a good place to live? I don't mean how you love the Pats or Sox or C's, or Bruins, but to raise a family?

I live in Dallas area now, and my wife and I are considering a move. I know that climate will be quite a change, but is the quality of life good?

We don't make a lot per year on combined income, and I'm curious to how that would translate there.

Any input would be appreciated.

This isn't the first I've heard of it, but it has to be a major factor. If we go, I would guess our income would increase about 20k or so, but that does no good if housing increases dramatically.

Drew I'm actually moving from Boston area to NC due to cost of living in New England. You can't afford a house in Mass now. Good luck

Cost of living is high. What do you and your wife do for a living, that could make a difference. For example, nurses in Boston make Big money. I now live in Southern New Hampshire and if you live and work in New Hampshire you pay no income tax, although I work in Mass. so I pay Mass income tax...

I moved from Boston ( canton ma) to Fla 13 years ago for the weather.
Now we have insurance companies holding us hostage on our houses

went from $ 580 up to $ 2500

Boston is nice. Move into the south suburbs and you will have nice neighbors and a nice place to raise your kids. Ponds freeze over and they will learn how to play hockey in the winter. baseball in the spring and football in the fall
good luck

I would be hesitant due to the cost of living.

typical cliche thing to say. yes it's expensive in boston, and ny. but, they are great places to live because the jobs are higher paying than a raleigh or a cincinnati. example, an entry level accounting job pays mid 40s or 50s with a good firm, where other cities aside from 4-5 would that be? you get what you pay for, frankly....you'll get great schools up there, good community, good food, but yes high taxes and home prices no doubt....marblehead on the north coast, and the southern burbs are pricey but nice, maybe look further away from city....
and jackson, you and kosar are anti-northeast fan club b/c for some reason you think the people are jerks, it's too fast, too dirty, expensive, whatever, but they are great places to live, i guess if you like laid back, non sarcastic, hunting and fishermen, dont move up here, but most like it  diff strokes for diff folks, only explanation there is

I appreciate all the responses. We're actually considering several places: Raleigh, Atlanta, St Louis, Boston

Right now, we are in the beginning stages of the search, but thought I'd put a feeler out there. I'd be interested if any of you live in the other cities as to what you think as well.

Knoxville rocks! Hell, I'm a Nole but I have no regret moving from Tallahassee. Folks here are great and we actually have all the seasons. Won't get that in Tally.

I can't imagine the cost of living being too high. We're doin' just fine. Great city to raise kids too!

I'm sure volfan will agree........Knoxville rocks!!!!

i don't have anything against boston, it just wouldn't be a spot i would think about moving to, that's all. the weather pretty much knocks it off the list. and i'm talking about if i had a choice of moving to any place i wanted to in this country. boston and new york would not be on the list.

I've grown up here, and have never enjoyed it. This place isn't about who you are or what kind of person you are, but how much you have and putting on a face for others to see. (at least that's always been the feel in the north dallas area)

I know that attitude isn't exclusive to Dallas, but there has to be more to life than this place:shrug:

also, NYSF, i was born and raised in the baltimore area and love it there and baltimore is not on my list either.

i'm at the stage where i don't want winter and traffic. either of those, places a city way down on the list.

tennessee, kentucky, rural virginia, north carolina, small to mid city georgia, southern indiana and some cities in south caroline, texas and arizona are on my list.

i'm fortunate, with my job, that i can live anywhere i want, so high cost of living areas makes no sense to me. i don't get paid any more in NYC than I do in bumfuk montana.
