I really enjoy it here in Atlanta. Though I do miss Chicago at times, I would much rather be in Altanta. Cost of living is in check, Still have the a decent size city with plenty to do.

Mountains 3 hours north, Beach 5 hours south. Mild winters, but cold enough to use the fireplace.

I've enjoyed my visits to Atlanta. It's on the top of where we're searching right now.

also, NYSF, i was born and raised in the baltimore area and love it there and baltimore is not on my list either.

i'm at the stage where i don't want winter and traffic. either of those, places a city way down on the list.

tennessee, kentucky, rural virginia, north carolina, small to mid city georgia, southern indiana and some cities in south caroline, texas and arizona are on my list.

i'm fortunate, with my job, that i can live anywhere i want, so high cost of living areas makes no sense to me. i don't get paid any more in NYC than I do in bumfuk montana.

I hear ya, man. Actually my folks, who have lived in NY their whole life, want out also. I could see moving, but where? It's really tradeoffs...do you want to give up good people/food/sports/attitude/activites/beaches to get out of winter, out of traffic, and live a little cheaper? Tough call.... dont you get winter in southern indiana though? trust me though, as great as no winter is (like in florida when i lived there) there is other stuff you sacrifice....ie wacked out people, no culture, no community, bad schools if thats an issue, bad food, etc.....but you're right, you're in a unique situation where you can work anywhere, and you're fortunate.
I think denver, colorado is actually a decent compromise. cold winter yes but nice atmosphere, lots to do, not expensive, etc. everyone loves north carolina now a days, but ive read lots of people moving there who hated it, as they hate northerners 'invading' their space, but i could be wrong. theres no real 'answer' to this question, as every place has pros and cons. if you can live half the year in one spot warm (ie zona, california, carolinas) and the summer in any place you like (indiana, chicago, new york, boston) then that is really the life.. but you need ultimate flexibility to do that, which 90+% of folks dont have

well, traffic is gonna suck in any big city. i hate it as much as you do, man. so i just take trains if go to city, and try to drive at "off" times any other time. the newer warm spots like atlanta, phoenix, vegas have the worst traffic b/c they dont have any damn public transporation...at least you can run madjacks from your home so dont need to drive as much

The traffic is horrible in ATL. I live in the burbs, and you learn how to manage it. Of course there are time you can't for flights and stull like that.

well, theyre all sprawled out, sure theyve probably got a few bus lines but nobody wants to take those, too spread out out west for trains and such it seems like...trains/subways work great in ny,bos and chitown, a bit crowded yes but you get away from the traffic and you dont have to drive and worry about parking

I Like Boston

before we moved to arizona, we visited the boston area....& absolutely loved it.great walking city & alot of history.but i wouldn't live there, if i had the choice because the high cost of living, high taxes, &winter.....my old bones can't take the cold weather anymore...

I moved from Boston ( canton ma) to Fla 13 years ago for the weather.
Now we have insurance companies holding us hostage on our houses

went from $ 580 up to $ 2500

Boston is nice. Move into the south suburbs and you will have nice neighbors and a nice place to raise your kids. Ponds freeze over and they will learn how to play hockey in the winter. baseball in the spring and football in the fall
good luck

cavy1

cavy...obviously you know that your homeowners is that high because of huricanes...

it's tradeoff.....when i moved from ny i was paying $3600 a year in car insurance for an acura...& in arizona my car ins. went down to $1200 a year.

before we actually moved we thought of moving to the southeast, but the high humidity was the deciding factor....and although it gets very hot during the summer, the nights are not too bad when the temps gat into the 90's...

what i like about where i'm living is that it's very clean because the people take pride in their city, the restaurants, nightlife,& theater's are improving....it's a 5 hour drive to vegas & san diego...

I live in Boston....Can't wait for the day I move back south. Great place when single, but expensive. If you dont mind paying 400-500k for an 1000 sq ft condo to live within 15 miles of the city, or 300-500k for a 2000sq ft house about 1-2hrs outside of then city then go for it.

I will probably get support from others here but you may want to include Nashville in your search:shrug:

Cost of living is good, no state income tax, two professional sports teams, great night life, great theater, arts and symphony and one of the fastest growing cities in the country for new business.

You got a Madjacker with a GREAT BAR downtown, perfect place to go before Titans games and any other time

St Louis:nono:

I lived in north Dallas {Addison}for a year and Atlanta not much different, too big, too much sprawl, traffic stinks and similar to Dallas

If you are looking at NC, I would suggest Charlotte over Raleigh, more to do, except it is a mecca for college hoops

Hope this helps and good luck in your search!

phoenix is the 5th (?) largest city in the country & the traffic is not too bad....& there are city buses that run in most areas...& i'm glad that there isn't a subway system....
