Restaurant - Tip (Always 15%, 20% exceptional service)

Ice Cream shop - No tip (I hate even seeing their tip jars out, it looks like they're asking for money)

Coffee Shop - No tip (I hate even seeing their tip jars out, it looks like they're asking for money)

Food counter at Food convenience store or fast food place - No tip (Is this fine dining, are you going to come over and refill my water?)

Buffet - Tip $1 or $2 at most (A lot of people don't tip this type of joint at all)

Having worked in the service industry for 13 years now, most people do tip on buffets, but most of ya'll are right on with what people tip. around $2 is normally about right, or $5 per couple, sometimes more if they keep my drink filled and table clean. Keep in mind, most servers make below minimum wage without their tips though, I know its $2.13/hour in Mississippi. Most restaurants around here do automatic gratuity on parties that are over 6-8 people, and that is 18%-20%, so those of you that only tip 15% need to go up a few %age points to maybe 18%. Some restaurants also require their servers to tip out other help (bartenders, bussers, server assistants, hostesses, credit card processing fees), so if you tip 15%, the server is actually only getting around 11-12%.

Situational for me on most of the above, but I generally tip the barber a couple of 2-3 bucks and a buck per person on the buffett, unless we get something special, like the waiter waiting for my personal piece of meat to come off of the grill and bringing it to my table. Takeouts usually get to keep the change. My "regulars" usually get something for Christmas (if they're around that long, LOL) Now, if anyone thinks this is cheap,a good waiter/waitress gets 25% from me.

And, I'm from South Florida, where service is generally just terrible and getting worse all the time. I refuse to buckle: I don't consider it being cheap, I consider it standing my ground. Treat me good & I'll take care of you, treat me like a nothing & that's what you'll get. Half of the time you can't even understand what they are saying, much less carry on a decent conversation with them.
Very honestly, it is comonplace for at least one mistake to accompany my meal. 20% of the time, more than one mistake, even as many as 3. If you don't believe it, come down here for a spell !!

Im a blackjack dealer in Vegas, working at a 'middle of the road' casino.. Very few, if any, dealers make $40/hr.. Maybe Wynn, CP, and Bellagio.. The rest of us make on average about $25/hr WITH tips.. Just wanted to clarify that.. Tips are about 70-75% of my income..

Hairdressers: 20% - not cheap, I tell you.

Ice cream stand, convenience store, etc...: hell, no. What "service" are they performing? This is where tipping has gotten out of hand.

Buffet: a couple of bucks.

Applebee's car service: a couple bucks.

Legitimate tipping professions (servers, hairdressers) are fine, but for the kids who scoop $5 ice cream into a tiny cup? I don't think so.

If you don't like making $5.00 bucks an hour, get an education or a skill.

The thing that bugs me about dinning out is the flatline tip amount for service.

Lets use 20% for exceptional service:


Order a bottle of wine, and 2 meals.

1) Wine is $100 tip $20
2) Wine is $20 tips only $4

1) 2 Steak Dinners $25 per, $50 tip $10
2) 2 Bowl's of Soup $6 per, $12 tip $2.40

Why the need to give $23.40 extra for the same amount of service. This whole system is wacked!

I could break it all down if it helps....We do tanning as well so the # could go up if that helps anyones case.............

Supply & Demand for good service I guess.......Just like here, you get more traffic than company X, you should get more $ for advertising $'s.

You have more demand than openings available to cut hair , you get more $.
