I'm wondering if he was offered that as an option to avoid being fired.

When it comes to in-game decisions, Tomlin's about as clueless as 98% of the other guys who have been NFL head coaches the last 20 years. But I'd say his players respect him, which counts for a lot. Much has been made of his non-losing season streak, but has he ever, even one season, had a below-average roster?

It's interesting that it's happening after this season though. My Pittsburgh friend says the rumor is they purposefully left "the cupboard a little bare" this year in order to get some better draft picks. Which would then make bringing in Rodgers really dumb. Unless they figured his old ass would lose more, while still making it look like they were TRYING to win.

Also, I'd love to know whose idea it was to hire Arthur Smith as the OC. It's amazing to me that he has a job anywhere in football. I've never seen him display even a whiff of competence.

It depends on his contract but by quitting they might not have to pay him.
100%. I could be wrong, but I THINK the Steelers organization is decent enough they could have said to him "You're gone either way. If you resign, we'll still pay the rest of your contract."

As long as he's been there, they at least owed him that.

However, expecting an NFL organization to do the right thing is usually foolhardy.

I love Tomlin. But change is good at this point.
He's a great coach , never has near the top talent.

Tomlin will be ok for a year or two and most likely still be involved with the NFL.

With 9 current openings I’m not so sure 2 more will open after the Bills lose and the Packers decide to move on from Lafleur.

One candidate I feel will get a job is former Packer/Girls head coach is McCarthy. Bellichek as well. His buyout at UNC was lowered.

Tomlin says he might take a break for a year but who knows what he does because there are good opportunities available now that won't be there in a year or two. Tomlin most likely has his choice and is probably the more desirable coach in the market now, even over Harbaugh.

Agreed. So long as those teams who might be interested can pay his buyout and draft picks for. He was making nearly $20mil Per year.

How does that work? I just assumed that the team doesn't owe him since he quit.

From what the smarter folks said of the NFL talking heads he stepped away with years left so if he goes to another NFL team that’s where draft picks and buyout of remaining money would take place.
I guess that makes sense but I don't understand why anybody would be liable for his remaining salary. Draft picks I can see because the Steelers technically own him for the remaining term.

Harbaugh will be cheap because the Ravens will have to pay $34 million for two remaining years.

It's still early to speculate, I guess.

I heard the Tomlin taking a year off thing too.
Nothing written in stone, of course.

Remaining 8 head coaches should all be safe regardless of outcome, certainly in the NFC. McDermott the only longshot left to maybe be sent packing, but I figure he would really need to blunder the Denver match for that to happen, at this point.

Coordinators are another story.

No, the Pittsburgh Steelers will not have to pay Mike Tomlin as he decided to step down as head coach, and in fact, any NFL team wanting to hire him must provide the Steelers with compensation in the form of draft picks.

Mike Tomlin's Contract & Departure
  • Resignation, Not Firing: Mike Tomlin chose to step down, which means he was not fired by the Steelers. Since he was not terminated, the team is not obligated to pay out the remaining salary on his contract.
  • Retained Rights: Tomlin had a contract that ran through the 2026 season, with a team option for 2027. By resigning while still under contract, the Steelers retain his coaching rights for that period.
  • Trade Compensation: If another NFL team wants to hire Tomlin before the end of the 2027 season, they must negotiate a trade with the Steelers for his rights, similar to when the Broncos acquired Sean Payton from the Saints.
  • Future Coaching: Tomlin is reportedly planning to take at least the 2026 season off, possibly for a television role. If he waits until after his contract and the team option expire, he would then be a coaching free agent and could be hired without any compensation going to Pittsburgh.

Steelers owner says Mike Tomlin not expected to coach again ‘in the near future’

The Steelers still retain Tomlin’s rights; he is under contract for 2026, and the team has until March 1 to exercise an option for the 2027 season. If Tomlin is interested in returning to coaching during that term, Pittsburgh would, presumably, receive compensation for its coach based on recent precedent. Most recently, the Denver Broncos gave up a first-round pick and a future second-round pick for Sean Payton and a third-rounder. However, Rooney declined to discuss the specifics of the contract and suggested that, at least in the immediate wake of the resignation, a trade is not on the table.

“Mike indicated that he did not anticipate coaching, at least in the near future,” Rooney said. “I think he wants to spend time with his family and do some of the kinds of things he hasn’t been able to do for the last many, many years. If something like that comes up, we’ll deal with it when it comes up. But right now that doesn’t seem to be on his radar.”

Tomlin didn't have enough power to demand the Steelers invest heavy in the offense.
Where's he going with an Elite QB prospect or already there attached to an OC and playcaller?

8 straight years w/out a Playoff win..

Lived w/washed up Roethlisberger and Rodgers on a teams where points scared we a joke.
Lived w/Pickett and Wilson..
Time to take a job in broadcasting
It's over !
