BDB... how was Payton a prick? He had opened a bank in my hometown and although I was young, I met him a few times and several of my fathers friends knew him and said he was a great guy.
Just curious cause I never heard anyone speak bad of him.
first, i'll start by saying that EVERY account I've heard about the guy is that he is a great guy. But, my only experience with him is a dick. Unfortunately, that is the one that will live with me. Not trying to shape anyones opinion of the guy. Maybe I just caught him on a bad day.
but anyway, i'll make this a short story.
i was in my early 20s. Payton was doing the appearance trail. Corporations were paying him to speak and appear at their functions. I was still struggling at cards, and was running bad, or probably playing bad and this was before online poker. anyway, my friend worked at a banquet hall that did corporate events as one of its things. He got the word that some computer tech company had a holiday party where they were showcasing new computer equipment or something like that and that Walter Payton was gonna be there as an endorser. I'm sure he was handsomely paid, but nontheless he was there. The hall hired temp help all the time, and I told my friend that I would help out that day if they needed help because I really wanted his autograph for my dad. My dad grew up in chicago and is a diehard bears fan, and I wanted him to sign a ball for a xmas gift. Anyway, the deal was that Payton was to have 200 little mini footballs to sign for all the people there and throw them around and meet the guy or something like that. So my bright idea was to go to Sportmart and buy a regulation football and have him sign it to my dad. Put my dads name on there and everything. So the banquets winding down, and I go up to his place on stage and ask him to sign my football gift with my dads name and personalize it or something. The first thing he says is thats bullchit, you are just gonna turn around and sell the damn thing. I politely explained that my dad loves him and the bears and he flew out for the superbowl and is a crazed fan and that his idol is payton. I said personalize the damn thing with my dads name, how can I sell that. I said hell, its an honor for me to even meet you. He rips the ball out of my hand, signs his name only, and shoves it back to me in my gut harder than a handoff, and tells me to get out of there kid. wtf was that all about.
anyway, sorry no paragraphs. sorry if that offends anyone, and maybe i did get him on a bad day. but my dad has the ball on the mantle and its his prized possession and i'm glad i got it. it meant a lot to him and me.
