So the two coaches in the Minny/UCLA first round game have both been fired. That has to be the first time that has happened.

Kind of surprised as Minnesota has never been a basketball hotbed... I know they had a 1 seed around 97-98 and I believe made Elite 8, but otherwise this team rarely makes any noise. However, Tubby really never had a good team, but they made the round of 32 which makes this firing surprising.

The Howland firing has me even more baffled... he gets fired after winning the Pac 12???

UCLA alums/fans are delusional. Their only national title since Wooden was with dirty Harrick. Look at the amount of sweet 16's + that Lavin and Howland achieved and both were run off.

Really suprised by the Tubby firing but I can't say that I blame them. Probably just trying to get lucky with someone new.

Howland suprises me though. I thought with the #1 class this past year he would at least get a chance to bring another class in on top of that and see what he can do. Saying that, I think he's better suited for the east coast. I think he should be in an area where he can recruit more gritty players that play an ugly style of ball. I know the school doesn't make the player or the way they play but UCLA just never represented his style, at least to me they didn't.

It's all relative based on perception....they started red hot and they do have a very good roster of highly talented players...finally, they had some very embarrassing losses this year where it looked like the kids simply gave up...

they looked terrible the whole month of feb,i know,I bet aginst them alot, but name me one ,just one great team minnesota ever had.john wooden didnt win his first national title at ucla for ten fuckin years!!! that dynasty would never have happened now because he'd have been fired after 5 years now,if not 2 or 3. minnesotas next coach will not be more successful than Tubby Smith, mark my words.

Who the hell does Minnesota think it is? You are going to get basketball athletes to come to Minneapolis? This and the firing of Glen Mason make you shake your head. They are looking for gloriy days of the 1950s and Bernie Oosterbuin to come back and it aint happening. Tubby is no John Wooden but they were competitive and don't think Minnesota gets back here soon.

Coach Steven's is said to have been contacted by Admin from Minnesota and Butler gave him permission to talk with Minnesota.

Andy Katz will probably spill the bag on it later on his show, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Where it is real F ing COLD
You guys are all wrong,Tubby had to go, he had a lot to do with hyping up this team himself. His game plan is old and boring. Hell they can't in bounds a pass and when they are pressed they look confused. He is out coached on a nightly basis. Yes he did bring in more talent then the previous regime but it was time. The way they lost getting blown out and losing on the road to Penn State and Nebraska is absurd.

The biggest reason he was fired is because the University has a new AD and wants to hire his own guy. I hear Shaka is at the top of the list. I would go with Flip Saunders, has the NBA pedigree to recruit players and it's his alma mater.

No talent in Minnesota?? Minnesota has a ton of talented basketball players, but they go to other schools. I don't know if it is because of the coach or the fact that their GYM is as old as the Bible or that they have no practice facility but in the history of Hoops you are going to leave Minnesota to play at a historical top university and let's face it some of these guys don't want to freeze their ass off.

Yeah they made it after a round but UCLA was a fucking mess.

By the way,I never compared Tubby Smith with Wooden.OF COURSE the shitty arena and lack of first class practice facility contributes to the problem.that reinforces the fact that in my lifetime at least,59 yrs,I cant remember one great minnesota basketball team,ie,no tradition, second rate facility, tits cold weather, Wooden himself might have a tough time winning there. If u think thats the best job shaka could get i have to say i disagree.nobody really first rate will go to coach there either imo.

Flip Saunders lives there, wants the job, and with his NBA experience would think kids would like that, but they definitely need a remodeling

I would think they know they are getting someone better. There's no way they fire Tubby just hoping they can find someone better. They either have Shaka or Saunders lined up. If they get Saunders, they won't be any better. I think Shaka can draw in some kids with his recent success and style of play.

Flip's a stiff. Another retread and they'll be at the bottom of the Big 10. Tubby's not a great coach but they are a relevant program and not sure i'ts going to get better. I know everyone up there hates the guy so this was pretty much pre ordained. Bleeding I've heard the same thing from every one else I know in Minny but just not sure you're going to get better.

The last good Minnesota team had Bobby Jackson at PG... he was a solid NBA player and they had a #1 seed. Otherwise, I can't think of a good Gophers team.

We all liked Tubby and gave him a chance but it's just the way the team falls apart and looks so unprepared at times. This program will probably always suck but it sucks to see good players from the Minneapolis area leave for WI. Saying that, I am a bandwagon jumper when it comes to this team, I could care less about hoops when it comes to a rooting interest. I care about $$$$$$$ and will only pay attention when they are winning, I never watch them when they really suck unless I bet against them:0074
