Things like this don't happen to responsible firearm owners. Normal people keep their arms locked in safes and out of the reach of children.

If it is locked in a safe, how can you use it to protect yourself from intruders? TIA:0corn

If you possess a conceal/carry permit, it means exactly that. Not leave it lay in the back of the car loaded for a child to get their hands on it.
Once again, it was the guns fault. Surely not the irresponsible grandma.

Good answer, Greg Hardy, but that wasn't my question.

Stay with me on this, how can you protect yourself from intruders if your gun is locked in a safe?

After all, protection is the main reason to own a handgun. Just trying to figure out how one can protect themselves and lock the gun safely away from children.

For me, every firearm I own is locked, in a safe. I don't feel the need to leave a few laying around loaded in case an intruder comes busting through the front door. For those that feel the need to leave them out, maybe they are in the wrong part of town. Or possibly one of the idiots.....like grandma.

You're a responsible gun owner. For myself, I have never loaded a gun in side the house, or anywhere else unless I was preparing to fire it.

I think you and I should have permits.

Idiots should not have permits.

Concealed or open carry should apply only for those with a demonstrable need.

Get caught carrying without a carry permit, go to jail.

It's unclear whether granny knew the gun was in the car, but the idiot who put it in the car did know. He deserves punishment. Call it reckless endangerment, allowing a two year old access to a loaded gun. Six months and a lifetime ban on gun ownership sounds about right.

If granny had died, it's reckless manslaughter. 12.5 years hard time.

Yep whoever owned that gun should never be allowed to have a hand gun ever again.

The article says no charges have been filed yet, hahahaha, waiting for the 2 year old to be charged.

I realize it's not the guns fault, it's the person's fault but the gun sure makes it easier for multiple victims and for instant rage

Shootings by toddlers have happened in 24 states so far this year. Missouri has seen the most, with five separate incidents. Florida has had four. Texas, three. Due to the low number of total cases and the isolated nature of these incidents I'd caution against drawing broad conclusions from the map above. But it is worth noting that the shootings don't necessarily follow broader population trends. California, the most populous state in the nation, hasn't had any. Nobody has been shot by a toddler in New England or the Upper Midwest.

I've included my tally of toddler shootings below. News sources are linked in the City column. Know of any this year that I missed? Drop me a line.

Dude, we need more guns to protect ourselves from bad guys, but we also need to lock them in a gun safe to protect our children. Fortunately, most criminals will wait for us to open our gun safes to make it a fair fight.
