For a satellite in orbit to be able to pick up this event, the satellite would have to be focused on this town at the moment the event happens.

I had a Dodge Caravan disappear from my parking lot one night and return hours later- unfortunately we didn't have cameras at the time and can only assume that the 90 miles that was put on it was done during a drug run. At least they were nice enough to return it undamaged.
