One thing I find funny is that Francona actually let Wakefield bat for himself in the 7th, despite the fact that his team trails by one and Wake has pitched poorly, as usual. There are few worse managers in the game than Francona, if you ask me.

Boston, as a team, cracks me up. They are so feast or famine it's not even funny. There are some games where they look unbeatable, kind of like last night's game where they simply were NOT going to lose that game. Then there's games like tonight, where they are completely inept and can't win even when the other team tries to hand them the game.
I still can't believe Francona left Wakefield in to hit for himself. I've been watching baseball a long time and I've never seen a manager who leaves his struggling starters in as long as Francona does. It's like he's terrified of using his pen. :142smilie
I think Francona was saving his pen leaving Wake in. His pitch count was low...why not. He's given up a lot of hits, but only down 1 run. I know the Sox pen has been used a lot lately. I don't think Francona is among the worse managers in the league. No way IMO.
I've seen him lose A LOT of games by leaving starters in too long. Not just this year, but many years in the past as well. There may be some things he does well, but managing his bullpen is certainly not one of them. His poor managerial decisions are overshadowed by the fact that he always has teams with a bunch of talent. I think just about every manager in the game would have success in Boston.
As far as this game goes, Wakefield's pitch count may have been low but it was the 7th inning and his team was behind by 1 run. At that point I think you have to start playing for the win. Maybe if it's the ace I would leave him in to hit for himself, but with a poor pitcher like Wake I would pinch-hit for him and not even think twice about it. I guess it didn't matter either way though, since Wakefield ending up drawing a walk.
I honestly didn't realize the game was still going. :142smilie I looked at ESPN and it said Wilson had 1.0 innings pitched, so I figured he got the save and it was over. I forgot he came in in the 8th so he still needed to get one more out.
And let me just say... I hope Gamecast is wrong and Francona isn't going to go down with Bill Hall at the plate, when he's got Drew and Varitek on the bench. :facepalm:
He lets Hall AND McDonald (both RH) hit for themselves, rather than PHing Drew or Varitek. Wilson is a righty, but he doesn't go to the bench to bring in a lefty bat there? Odd, to say the least...
The funny thing is I didn't even have money on this game. I just REALLY dislike the Red Sox. And I've lost quite a few bets because of boneheaded moves by Francona. There seem to be at least a few of them every game.
Congrats if you had SF. They made it close, but they pulled it out...
