A new virus has been on the rampage lately. Simply being "online" puts you at risk. Many of you have been hit already. I know this topic has already been covered in a couple of threads, I'm just trying to spread the word as much as possible! If your computer is not behind a firewall, you are at risk. If you don't know what a "firewall" is, and you are on your computer at home, you probably do not have one. If you are at work, you are probably safe. (most corporate networks are behind firewalls) Like I have stated in other threads, a good hardware based firewall is invaluable, and this virus is just one GOOD example. I will recommend a few firewalls at the bottom of this post.

Symptoms:
The only thing I have heard about is the computer "shutting down in 60 seconds", and something about a "Remote Procedure Call".

Let me emphasize strongly that you should install the fix for this virus IF YOU HAVE BEEN INFECTED OR NOT! If you are certain that you have already been infected, there is a removal tool here. There is also a fix that can be installed on your machine that can protect you from the get-go. It appears at this time that only Windows 2000 and Windows XP are at risk. (There are others, but they are server operating systems) The corresponding fixes are below:

Windows 2000
Windows XP

You need to install these updates soon because I found this tidbit of info about this virus on a website:
If the current month is after August, or if the current date is after the 15th, the worm will perform a DoS (denial of service) attack on Windows Update. The worm will activate the DoS attack on the 16th of this month, and continue until the end of the year. This means that the fix could be difficult to get at the end of this week.

This brings me to another important point. USE WINDOWS UPDATE OFTEN. There has been a link in the start menu in all versions of Windows since '98. USE IT. It will scan your computer and tell you which updates you need. You can find the update that fixes the above mentioned virus there. It has been there for weeks. Security Update for Windows 2000/XP (823980) Windows Update may already be under attack, as it is running very slow at the time of this post.

If you would like to read more information about this virus, here are a few articles:
Info on the virus from Symantec
Info on the vulnerability from Microsoft

As I promised, a couple of firewalls that I would recommend are the Linksys BEFSR41 or the Netgear RP614. Of course you will need to be a Cable or DSL subscriber to use one of these.

Good luck to all...;)

yup, its a shitty one. I installed the patch a week ago and my systme still got infected by the virus.
Spent $60 at Best Buy to get it taken care of. Wasted about 4 hours of my day trying to fool with it before I took it in. Upgraded my virus scan program too...

Chad, I think windows 98 is not at risk. Also, the router you have at home probably has a built-in firewall. The firewalls I mentioned above are actually cable/dsl routers that are also firewalls. This is probably what you have. Post the make/model of your router and I'll tell you for sure. If it is a firewall, you can uninstall zone alarm.

...you'll have to wait until I get home. Although I carry a lot of useless chit around in my ole noggin, the make/model number of my router just ain't in there.... LOL :D

edit: p.s When are you going to make it up here, dammit? I've got some questions about computers that I refuse to pay a so-called "expert" to help me with.... Why pay some fly-by-night guy with his own business card claiming to be a computer guru when I've got my old college buddy to help me out. ;)

...by the way, we'll be leaving Friday afternoon to head down your way. We've got to drop off one of the boxer puppies in memphrica, so how about a beer or three before we head on down to the poker room? You still haven't meet the little woman and I've meet yours twice. :D

Chad,
You mentioned earlier that you have no way to check your home email at work. Hahaha...try this:

edit - link removed.

Let me know if this works and I'll email you today. ;)

...yeah, I know how to do that if the message is still on their server; however, I turn my computer on in the morning and it periodically downloads my e-mail throughout the day, so I can read it when I get home. This would work if I left my computer off during the day and the messages remained on the server, but once they are downloaded to my home computer, they're no longer on the server. :(

...see I'm not as computer savvy as some, but I ain't computer illiterate either. ;)

All you gotta do is close your email program at home during the day if you want to leave your machine on!! But I'm sure you knew that! ;)

Anyway, we will probably come up sometime this fall. As for this weekend, hows about we meet up down south for a little seafood buffet? :brows:

Seafood sounds good...where are you thinking? Surely not "down south" in Crackhaven?

...or do you mean really south, like Tunica?

...let me know where you're thinking because we won't get down there until 9:00 or so and I want to call KFC and let him know....

p.s. yeah, I know to close the program at home. I'll give you my e-mail here at work...drop me a reminder in my e-mail at home and I'll remember to send you the work addy. ;)

I'm talking about Tunica seafood buffets. Binion's and Sheraton are both good. BTW - Binion himself was at Horseshoe Friday night. There was a hold 'em tourney going on. lol
