interesting read:

Keep an eye on the USC-Arkansas game on Sept. 2 of opening week. It?s shaping up to be interesting not only from a football viewpoint but bookmaking one, too.

?This game could illustrate a change between wiseguys becoming squares and squares becoming wiseguys,? says professional handicapper Andy Iskoe.

Figure USC to be around a 10-point favorite. Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart have departed, but the Trojans still are loaded on offense and return possibly the nation?s best set of linebackers.

The Trojans buried the Razorbacks 70-17 last year, easily covering despite laying 30 points.

So you might think that the betting pattern on this season?s matchup would be easy to predict - the public laying whatever number they have to with USC.

But not so fast.

Even though Arkansas endured its first losing seasons under coach Houston Nutt over the past two years, there?s a lot of favorable preseason betting buzz surrounding the Razorbacks.

Some of this stems from Phil Steele?s influential college football magazine. He picks the Razorbacks as one of the surprise teams for ?06.

He`s not alone, either.

?I think the entire world is going to be on Arkansas,? Iskoe says. ?USC suffered a number of key losses. This is a huge revenge game for Arkansas.

?It?s not just because Phil Steele touts them. I think the Razorbacks are going to be a very popular team because they return 19 starters. It?s very unusual to return that many starters.?

These factors are going to get driven home in this age of information, not only in magazines, but on bulletin boards and Internet posting forums.

?There is so much sophistication out there you?re going to see cases made for the underdog,? Iskoe says. ?In the past people never would have thought of underdogs. Now there?s becoming somewhat of a role reversal where recreational bettors are looking for underdogs in the first place.?

Bookmakers can sense this. They already know there is more smart money on college football compared to the NFL. This matchup, though, could turn into a rare instance where the favorite ends up with more value.

Loving the revenge angle, the 19 returning starters and home underdog role, the public jumps on Arkansas. Sharps initially might have been looking to get involved with the Razorbacks, now they will backtrack if the number keeps getting lower and lower.

?Anything in single digits has to be considered a cheap price,? Iskoe says. ?I think there?s actually going to be value on Southern Cal for that game.?

Professional gambler Steve Fezzik even predicts the closing line could have USC favored by just 7 ?. If that indeed becomes the case, look for the professionals to back the favorite and fade public opinion.

Never forget the Trojans still are the Trojans. Unlike most teams, they reload rather than rebuild.

The Trojans have won 48 of their last 52 games. They have had all offseason to prepare for this matchup, and then don?t play for another two weeks. Their focus should be there.

Sure Arkansas looks like it has potential, but starting off against USC certainly isn?t a way to ease into the season.

There are questions about Arkansas? passing attack, both throwing and protecting the quarterback. The Razorbacks finished 110th last year in passing yards.

Plus, none of Arkansas? meager four victories last season was against top competition. They beat Southwest Missouri State, Louisiana-Monroe, Mississippi and Mississippi State.

Now suddenly, the Razorbacks can hang close against powerful USC?

?I?m not that impressed with them as far as their ability to step up in class this year,? Iskoe said of the Razorbacks.

I was sort of thinking the same thing lately..I've been calling Ark but now I am getting a little worried because its seems there are just too many people on Ark...this game will mostly likely be a pass for me; too tough to call IMO...but you do have to like what Ark has to offer...19 returning, blowout last season, a night game as a homedog...having said that if this line drops like I think it will...wtf I'll lay the chalk with SC and lets not forget SC is not the only team with a new starter at QB...this game should give us a pretty good measure of both teams...I will be riding Clemson more so than Ark this season...good post DP

Hogs' McFadden hurts toe in bar fight, likely out vs. Southern Cal
July 29, 2006
CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas tailback Darren McFadden, a first-team All-SEC selection, underwent surgery on his toe Saturday morning following an overnight bar fight and is doubtful for the Razorbacks' season opener against Southern California.

McFadden got into a fight at 4:20 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Palace the Club, a private Little Rock club, according to a police report. The fight was still going on, and a crowd was watching, when officers arrived.

McFadden told police he didn't know the person with whom he was fighting, the report said. He was then taken to a hospital for treatment.

The Razorbacks said McFadden dislocated a joint in his left big toe and had surgery in Little Rock to repair the capsule surrounding the joint. A small pin was also inserted into the joint to stabilize it.

Arkansas trainer Dean Weber said McFadden will not practice for several weeks and is unlikely to play against USC on Sept. 2.

McFadden rushed for 1,113 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, becoming the seventh freshman in Southeastern Conference history to run for 1,000 yards.

gotta love seeing all of the lines out

makes you realize how close the season is!

I lean on USC but I am not pulling the trigger just yet.

still a lot of time left for a lot of things to happen, injuries mainly and of course the ole' line movement.

The article above suggests that the public will be on Arkansas. We will just see about that.

Trojans are tempting, maybe too much so, at that price.

Both teams have too many questions but we're a month away from the game.

I think Tenn wins that by 7-10 points.
Cal is very overrated!! Pass Off. needs help
Def. is average. Only thing going for them is a strong run game

I'm a huge SC fan but the lack of experience starters on Off is a big concern :scared .
SC lost Superstars to the NFL.
talent like that is not expected to be replaced
the next season.
SC Def. will dominate & will be the reason they remain tough. If USC can score 24-28 ppg this season they may go undefeated!!

Phil Steele Also hyped the SH$% out of N.C State LY which had a lousy year .

I don't think Cal is overrated at all. This team is pretty much stacked.

the thing that makes me initially like tennessee in this spot is the fact that Cal's likely starting QB (Longshore) has very little game experience. He was the starter last year as a freshman and then broke his leg in the first game and was done for the year.

Longshore has got some good potential and I think he will play well this year and that Cal will be high in the rankings.

Trial by fire. He has to come back for his first game on the road (at night?) in one of the most difficult places to play. Not only that, Tennessee will be playing with unmatched emotion in an effort to erase the bad memory of last year.

Tennessee is consistently solid on the defensive side and they too have a very good RB and Erik Ainge will regain his freshman year form under UT's new offensive coordinator Cutliffe.

Two very good teams in a very interesting matchup. This is somewhat of a make or break game right off of the bat for these teams. If Cal can win this game I think they will be on their way to having at worst a 1 loss season (@USC). Very tough spot for the bears, winnable yes, but very tough spot

Not sure about the SC/ARK game yet, but I do like Tennessee at home!! CAL loses that game and then goes home and wins their next 3 games, but the Vols come away with the opener I feel......

So Cal
USC has many, many questionmarks. They are very unsettled on offense to be sure. We are hearing a lot about a new crop of running backs but they have only been wearing pads a couple of days and it isn't easy to tell much. I have never been overly impressed with Booty but someone must be to keep him around like this. Sanchez is just too inexperienced. The defense looks good and as people have said their linebackers are exceptional. It appears that they are instituting a new defensive scheme this year to take advantage of their strengths. I just don't think that anybody other than a real insider has much of a clue as to what their offense will be capable of early in the season.
