I am about to buy a 2008 Town and Country with 30k miles on it. The dealership is offering full mechanical extended warranty (6y/100k chrysler certified warranty) for $1900. I have never purchased a used car before, so I am just trying to figure out if this is a good deal and should I even get an extended warranty.

My credit union is offering the same warranty (not through chrysler though) for $2300 and if I do not use it I get a full refund.... is this a better deal (IE - is the $400 extra worth money back offer)

Any input is greatly appreciated!

unfortunately, not much choice based on needs. 3 kids under 5, convenience comes first. Need to get minivan and choices are basically the following
T&C
Caravan
Honda Odyssey

Live in detroit and support the auto industry, so it basically comes down to the first two.... which are both Chrysler.

The Honda Odyssey is by far your best choice........not an opinion - a fact.

No matter what - I would get an extended warranty.

I would go the credit union route depending on what they cover. Sounds too good to be true though.

The only reason I would go the credit union route is because they would be told they owe and they would pay.

Chrysler will jerk you around - I am pretty sure.

I don't disagree... but sometimes you cant convince someone out of what they want. My wife wants a T&C (plus she hlf her family work for chrysler), so that is what we are going with

i bought a jeep grand cherokee back in 02 (after my pathfinder was totalled)....and it`s a very good vehicle....

but the dealership was a problem...when things started to get dicey for the company financially(in the current economic recession),they started finding expensive things wrong with it(right after warranty expiration)....

then, one of their employees scraped the hell out of the front bumper and headlight when moving the vehicle and they didn`t replace anything......just buffed it out...never looked quite the same...

that was it...never went back...been years and never had another major issue with the vehicle...

like the vehicle...but,not fond of chrysler dealerships...

I for one disagree. There are not many things that I get extended warranties on but a car is one.

Extended Warranty = mechanical breakdown insurance contract. (MBIC)

DO NOT BUY!!!

Buy the right vehicle with an excelllent service/low repair rate record, give it the best preventive maintence.

Put the purchase price of the MBIC in your savings account plus the deductable plus the interest paid, you can control your repair decisions and 9 times out of ten come out ahead.

Joker how long ago did you buy your last contract, I suspect a comprehensive contract with low or no deductable is much higher now.

The manufacturer's paper is usually better about using genuine parts and factory trained tech's then stand alone corp's contract.

Tranny or engine goes with off brand contract, you have paid 2300 for the engine plus your deductable, if you have one. You get a used (yep that is right we unloaded one today for a Trailblazer) engine dealer paid $835 selling to A/M contract corp for 1335 plus 9 hours labor maybe 10 so another $800 labor. Typical consumer finances the contract and pays interest on the purchase price plus a tidy profit to selling dealer. Contract is also a big HOOK to get you back to selling dealer for maintence and repairs.

Buy a 2-3-4-5 year old used vehicle, as economically as posssibe. Probably from a private individual that bought it new or slightly used, have them show you the service records, test drive it carefully, have a reputable independant repair shop inspect it and consider having them perform maintence. Ask the parts guy at local dealer for car line you are looling at what two repair shops buys the most mechanical parts from them in the area. One of those probably has an inpecable reputation of taking excellent car of their customes at a fair price!!

IF the MBIC company claim experiences ballon the repair and parts used quality will drop and or the loop hole clauses will increase. These guys also have inspector's drop by to make sure the failure is valid and the correct/cheapest procedures are followed. I have been around this business since 1975, it is not always pretty for the consumer, but it is managed to extract as much $$$$ as possible from the wallet.

And I did not even get into non covered components and repairs or neglect clauses. :(

Still not as crooked as the Wall St MBS mess we are recovering from. :scared

Geno, I know you are a car guy and appreciate the comments

I bought a 2006 Mercedes C280 last year with 40k miles and was a lease return, clean CarFax and a great price at $16,900...I bought 5 yr/100k extended warranty for $1500 from hearing costs of repairs on Mercedes...too late now but was this a bad purchase with repair costs on these cars?

You will know after the warranty expires. :)

What's $1500 for 5 years peace of mind? I would have bought it too.

I am a parts counterman in GM store, I hear how much the salesman makes and the deal(er) makes on these contracts, and the MBIC corp is making a profit also,( or at least that is the motive) so many levels of profit added into the repair expense, yes like any insurance contract it is underwritten to cover the claims and return a dividend. Main appeal is to share the total expenses among many, I would rather avoid all those beaks in the feeder and underwrite my own repairs. That viewpoint combined with my focused insight of GM products, and their repair record of each carline model as I see it 9 hours a day every working day affords me the knowledge to avoid the worst of the products.

Back to focus on your question, depending on the langauge of the contract that sounds like a decent value and YES GERMAN cars are expensive to repair! Is the 100K added to the current mileage? Or does the coverage end at 100K on ODOMETER?

Our water leak sublet specialist told me months ago about a Jetta his wife had to have. His wallet is still recovering from the impact of that car. BENZ or any luxury car carries a luxury price on the parts and labor charged by a fanchised deal. I see it in CADDY, HUMMER & VET parts every day.

Plus every option and feature you add is another motor, module, actuator or sensor/switch to break/fail.

Power windows, electric antennas and air bags are NEVER GONNA cost a penny on that 1964 Nova your grand - aunt used to drive :0074

At the other end of the model line up we have the AVEO, might be the korean word for junk, not sure has the same number of letters. Hit a Cbus, OH pothole in late feb or march and you are gonna need a new wheel maybe even a tire. Weak link on that model!

Another gripe I have about MBIC bought on new car is duplication of manufacturer's base bumper to bumper warranty, emmision 8/80 warranty and powertrain warranty for 5/100. These all come with the car when purchased new and the sales guy wants me to purchase additional coverage that I WILL NOT collect on untile these components/systems until the base warranty expires and he wants me to finance and pay interest on that expense while I am waiting, then he even gets a reserve(kickback) from the bank on the amount financed.

Makes you wonder " Hey if this new care is so good why do I need the extra coverage:shrug:
