Good morning all,
As I read up on all things college football I found myself asking some questions when looking at this upcoming college football season. Why so much respect for Virginia Tech this season? I may be wrong but I am left wondering what I do not see when looking this team over. Yes they do have Tyrod Taylor, this is a guy that could not get Sean Glennon off the field as a starter at QB. I know this is partly due to Beemers hard on for older players but honestly. He is a good player in an option offense, but he is not accurate throwing the ball and VT even used Boone at QB last season because they had little faith in keeping Taylor in for the entire game. The found a running back in Evans who can take some of the pressure off the passing game but it will be up to the returning players on the offensive line to hold up. The receivers are lack luster, yes they all have playing experience but they are all young and were not impresive last season so I find it hard to believe they will have break out years.

I know, I know... Virginia Tech is about winning ugly and playing good defense but look on the defensive side of the ball. They retain Cam Chancellor but they lose the better ball hawking safety Harris, they lose the best players on defense which were at linebacker. Cam Martin is ok but he is not near the playmaker VT is used to at LB and they will have to have untested players jump in and make big improvements or they will suffer. The Bud Foster defense has a great player in Worilds at DE but when you do not have the playmakers around him he will be doubled and that will be a bhuge problem for him.

Beemer and Foster have had a stable of players that have always come in and made big plays but they have to reload this season. It is not impossible but it is not proven. A lot of what if's and starting the season at alabama smells a lot of Clemson vs Alabama last season. VT being the outright favorite to win the ACC is just not a lock for me. They have teams like Wake (9 offensive starters), Miami (8 offensive starters and Harris is the better QB when up against Taylor), NC State (7 offensive starters, 7 defensive starters and they found the QB to work in O'Briens system), GT (TEN 10 offensive starters and the option is now better understood to those players) and North Carolina (9 defensive starters return and Butch Davis is getting his type of players.. lossing Tate and Nicks is a killer though) on the books for this season and all of those teams return high amount of playmakers then VT.

I was just doing some research and I am willing to reconsider my thoughts but I need a little more information than just Tyrod Taylor before I back the hokies. I respect a lot of cappers here, so please I open this thread up to any points I may have missed or overlooked.

Cheers

Corley1011,

Hope all is well chief. It has been too long, it is like a kid listening to christmas music the day after thanksgiving... time can't move fast enough.

Best of luck to you this season. gonna be tough for the dogs this season, althought they return Lee and Dixon a new system, with young o-linemen and 4 returns on defense might be tough for a first year coach. They are pinning a lot on the 6 JUCO players they brought in.

Cheers

Yeah it will be tough for my dawgs... not to mention Dixon was arrested this weekend. I really think the offense will be better though, which will help out alot.

Man you have no idea how ready I am.. I walked out on the field this weekend and looked at the massive jumbo tron they finished. I had to go up to Starkville this past weekend and move all my stuff out. Sad day when you move out of college :sadwave:

hey guys....

i think vt will be a very good team this year with a really great coach...

this is what lindy's magazine says about vt....

the offense has as many playmakers as it has had in beamer's career...they are 2 deep at every position but qb, where taylor should be ready to shoulder the load...the defense will always be good & the 2ndary is terrific..the offensive line is better than it has been since 2005, but it's still a concern...vt's 2 inside linebackers are 1st year starters....

i looked at their schedule & we should be able to tell what kind of team vt will have after the 4th game....the first 4 teams that they play are....bama (at atlanta)...& home to marshall, nebraska, & miami.....

good luck this season...

Hey AR,
Good to hear from you. I respect Lindy's and everything is yet to be determined but I fail to see them being deep at all positions. They have a lot of potential but after watching them in every game last season I wonder if how good VT can be without the defense scoring for them every game.

hey irish...

don't underestimate the experience that taylor got from playing last year....imo this guy is going to be a dynamic playmaker...similiar to the guy at ncst but playing with a better team...

I think Taylor shows the mental growth of Marcus Vick and not Bryan Randall. Now if he can make up for his mental game like Michael Vick did then it could be an easier road to the championship

It's a mystery. They were mediocre last year and should be a bit better this year, but probably not much.

They won the ACC title and a BCS bowl last year. I would say that is a little above mediocre.

Beamer has one of the longest records of consecutive appearances in the top 15 during the season of any active coach (I believe he is going on 18 or 19 seasons now) and he has done so by rarely cracking the top 15 in recruiting classes. For the past 20+ yrs he has gotten more out of his players than everyone expects.

I love their backfield this year if Evans can stay healthy and TT can only get better. Also, any down year for a Bud Foster D is still going to be better than most units in the country.

Having said all of that, their schedule is pretty tough with the ACC improving significantly. But as it looks right now, the best team in the ACC has only gotten better. That is why everyone is picking them to win once again.
