Good morning all,
As I read up on all things college football I found myself asking some questions when looking at this upcoming college football season. Why so much respect for Virginia Tech this season? I may be wrong but I am left wondering what I do not see when looking this team over. Yes they do have Tyrod Taylor, this is a guy that could not get Sean Glennon off the field as a starter at QB. I know this is partly due to Beemers hard on for older players but honestly. He is a good player in an option offense, but he is not accurate throwing the ball and VT even used Boone at QB last season because they had little faith in keeping Taylor in for the entire game. The found a running back in Evans who can take some of the pressure off the passing game but it will be up to the returning players on the offensive line to hold up. The receivers are lack luster, yes they all have playing experience but they are all young and were not impresive last season so I find it hard to believe they will have break out years.
I know, I know... Virginia Tech is about winning ugly and playing good defense but look on the defensive side of the ball. They retain Cam Chancellor but they lose the better ball hawking safety Harris, they lose the best players on defense which were at linebacker. Cam Martin is ok but he is not near the playmaker VT is used to at LB and they will have to have untested players jump in and make big improvements or they will suffer. The Bud Foster defense has a great player in Worilds at DE but when you do not have the playmakers around him he will be doubled and that will be a bhuge problem for him.
Beemer and Foster have had a stable of players that have always come in and made big plays but they have to reload this season. It is not impossible but it is not proven. A lot of what if's and starting the season at alabama smells a lot of Clemson vs Alabama last season. VT being the outright favorite to win the ACC is just not a lock for me. They have teams like Wake (9 offensive starters), Miami (8 offensive starters and Harris is the better QB when up against Taylor), NC State (7 offensive starters, 7 defensive starters and they found the QB to work in O'Briens system), GT (TEN 10 offensive starters and the option is now better understood to those players) and North Carolina (9 defensive starters return and Butch Davis is getting his type of players.. lossing Tate and Nicks is a killer though) on the books for this season and all of those teams return high amount of playmakers then VT.
I was just doing some research and I am willing to reconsider my thoughts but I need a little more information than just Tyrod Taylor before I back the hokies. I respect a lot of cappers here, so please I open this thread up to any points I may have missed or overlooked.
Cheers
