Louisiana governor declares state of emergency

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal on Thursday declared a state of emergency due to the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that threatens the state's fragile coast.

The declaration issued by the governor's office in the capital city of Baton Rouge empowers officials here to deploy state resources and seek federal assistance for the "predicted impact of oil along the Louisiana coast."

Jindal noted that US weather officials predict that the oil slick is likely to reach parts of the Louisiana coastline Thursday.

"At this time, the Pass a L'Outre Wildlife Management Area is expected to see the first impact of the oil spill," said Jindal's emergency declaration, which lasts for one month, through May 29.

The governor's pronouncement listed at least 10 wildlife refuges in Louisiana and Mississippi that are in the direct path of the oil plume and that are likely to be impacted, adding that "billions of dollars in ongoing coastal restoration projects may be at risk because of this emergency."

A massive deployment of resources and manpower so far "has not slowed the diffusion of the oil, which has reached over a 600-square mile (1,500 square kilometer) area and is about 16 miles (25 kilometers) off the Louisiana coast as of Thursday, April 29, 2010," Jindal's declaration said.

The Republican governor ordered state agencies to continue to monitor and respond to the leak, noting that "weather and environmental conditions are quickening the spread of the oil."

I am only guessing that the seafood will be contaminated for 3,5 7 years ?

Plus all the dead wildlife.

I heard yesterday from a "Coastie" on the news that another hole might have to be drilled, but that could take another month ! WTF OVER !

On the course!
Huge disaster. I find it hard to believe that we do not have the technology to cap the leak.........

They do have it........they just aren't using it. Nothing new. Other offshore countries have these devices in place, but the good ol USofA is always there to bail out big business, while shitting on the citizenry, so why pay to implement saftey devices????

Plus, let's sit on our asses instead of burning this crap off a week ago while we had the chance, right?

I have to think more and more, that all of these "disasters" are done by design........no one can be this stupid!

Good luck to all the poor schmoes who keep getting kicked in the nuts by Sammy down that way.

BP and public officials are assholes. Thumbs planted firmly in ass for a week following this thing. Their top 4 courses of action should have been enacted immediately. Our state economy is going to sink over this mess. Not to mention, LA receives lower royalty payments (by %) than neighboring states. No doubt the state officials that made the royalty deal lined their pockets and are now fat and happy.

Lame, just plain lame.......

While their thumb is embeded deeply in their collective asses they are paying the change game. Question is, who is yelling "Change"

Change Game: Thumb in ass other in mouth, every 15 mins someone yells change and you change thumbs. Kind of like the elephant game but you only have to taste your own shit.

Swat Teams to Oil Rigs?????

The Bear on Apr 30 2010 at 8:01 am | Filed under: Environmentalism
The President announced yesterday that the Department of Interior is sending swat teams to inspect all oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.
What in the hell is going on?
Is the White about to manufacture a ?crisis? over an oil spill with the ultimate aim of seizing all the oil rigs in the Gulf? Swat teams are under the domain of law enforcement agencies, what do they know about drilling activities?
OR?
Do they suspect that this is an act of eco- terrorism? Consider who would benefit politically from an oil spill in the Gulf?the environmental left.
Stay tuned, something is up.

The cost of Off Shore Oil Drilling:

The Photos You Haven't Seen

4563905856_24d3e7bc03.jpg

There's a different story and new photos emerging from the Gulf everyday. Today the amount of oil gushing from the seabed is five times larger than it was quoted as being just yesterday. It's being compared to the Exxon-Valdez spill off the coast of Alaska, one of the worst in U.S. History.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates the spill at 5,000 barrels (210,000 gallons) a day -- five times BP's earlier estimate of yesterday, and exceeding the worst-case scenario.

Greenpeace flew over the spill yesterday to capture images and to see the disaster first hand.

This is why the President's offshore drilling proposal needs to be taken off the table now.

Greenpeace and Gulf environmental groups sent the President an open letter today, calling for the President to personally visit the site of the spill and reverse his position on offshore drilling.

Cie, I feel terribly for you and all citizens in the gulf.

LA is my favorite state to visit.

Hit me up the next time your here.

I would say we could go fishing, but that is likely not going to happen for some time to come:(

It's terrible....What caused it ? Also I hope it doesn't affect the fishing business.

I'm not sure what caused it, but the fishing/hunting and the seafood industry will all be hit very hard and for a long time.

I just heard that there was an explosion at the site where 11 people were killed. It doesn't seem that as of now they know the cause.

Exactly. Cause remains unkown. Our marketing girl's husband was on the rig at time of explosion doing a routine safety inspection. He came out alive, but his wife was not alerted of his status for 24 hours. She was apparently a basket case, as can be expected.

Scary stuff. The worst part is LA will need fed $$ for this recovery, and there will be reluctance I am sure based on the level of thievery that took place, by public officials and residents alike, during the post-Katrina clean-up and rebuild.

How can they clean all the reeds that line the river basin? The answer................they can't. Oil residue will remain for decades.

"the bunker"
other than the valdez accident(which had nothing to do with an oil rig) ,how many other oil rigs have exploded and sunk into the sea?.....

nothing remotely this bad in terms of oil spill has happened in european oil fields - there have been accidents and pretty severe storms, but no massive slicks....

i`m withholding judgement pending finding out what just the hell caused this...

The nation's #2 fishing industry knocked right out of business, just like that. Sad, sad, sad.
