I am far from a racing expert and would like to see one of the house pros to chime in, but my understanding is the three races are barely connected from a business perspective, if at all. I do know for a five year stretch (2006-2011), the NYRA had even their own tv deal with ESPN to broadcast the Belmont.
I think some are viewing this as a progressive event like the NFL playoffs, but that is not the case.
The analogy here would be when Phelps was attempting to break the Olympic record of eight golds in one Games. Imagine he won the first seven, lost the final race, then called the winner of the eight race a cheater because it was his only Olympic event? It would be laughable.
These Triple Crown winners are immortals....which is why the Belmont is the test of the Champion. California Chrome is a real nice horse but is no where in the class of some others in the past fifteen years.
100% correct about this not being anything at all like the NFL playoffs.
the triple crown series is 3 very tough races for 3 year old horses. you do not have to and will never have to commit to all 3 races. period. that isnt how it works. comparing it to the olympics is a pretty good analogy I guess. it is like telling Usain Bolt he can run in the 100 meter dash only if he runs in every single race in the Olympics.
it just isnt going to happen. Some races arent meant for certain horses. Social Inclusion who ran in the Preakness is a horse who is best suited at 7 furlongs or a mile. A lot of times horses like this will enter the Derby because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. the fact is that the Derby RARELY has the best talent in it. A lot of the better 3 year olds will develop later and you will see them running over the summer and at Saratoga.
the bottom line is that Coburn knows very little about horse racing. you might think hey this guy owns a horse, he must know his shit. no. not even close. he does not have a grasp on how the industry works at all.
his proposition is hilarious and so idiotic it would never be taken into consideration. ever.
calling the Tonalist camp cheaters is more hilarious than his stance on who should be allowed to race. this sour grapes old bag of shit is going to get up on a soap box and tell the world and the industry how they should run things. get the fuck out of here. how much experience does this clown have with triple crown horses? or stakes horses at all? a pure miracle gave him this horse whos breeding is very inferior. instead of being thankful and counting his blessings, he is slandering everyone he comes across who doesnt agree with him. the entire run up to the Preakness and Belmont he was doing nothing but discrediting other horses and talking about how his horse was going to easily win all 3. having confidence in your horse is fine but have some class. rarely will you see any other owner or trainer out there completely disregarding his competition.
his horse was beatable. he wanted no part of going a mile and a half and not many horses do. that is the whole god damn point of the triple crown. it isnt an easy thing to do and it shouldnt be. you need to beat the best 3 year olds in each race. period.
the thing a lot of people dont get is how these horses are bred and trained. some horses are bred to run all day. horses sired by Dynaformer and AP Indy are going to have extreme stamina. (2nd and 3rd place were AP Indy and Dynaformer sired horses). these horses also take typically a bit longer to mature and get better. you usually arent going to see all of the best 3 year olds in february or march. some horses dont even reach their peak till 4 or 5 depending on when they start training.
Tonalist camp did nothing at all that even remotely resembles cheating. the uninformed Colburn should shut his mouth and just be a silent owner. Tonalist was set to run in the Wood Memorial to earn Derby points but had a lung infection. So according to Coburn, Clemente should have ran his horse not 100% if he wanted any chance of running in a Triple Crown race this year. sorry but that isnt how it works. who the hell are you to tell any other owner where or when they can or can not run their horse?
people put hundreds of thousands of dollars into their horses. if you buy a colt sired by AP Indy for close to a million dollars you are going to tell him he cant run in any triple crown races if he doesnt make the Derby? if you spend a million dollars on a horse you arent going to rush the horse to be ready. you are going to take your time so you dont have a horse pushed and pushed and suffer a career ending injury before his career even really gets started. too many trainers run their horses hard over the winter to get ready for the Derby and they flame out before the summer is even over and are retired to stud.
The Tonalist camp managed this horse perfectly, adjust its plan after it came up with an illness, and moved forward. Tonalist was much the best and if California Chrome couldnt beat him or anyone else who lined up that day, he does not deserve to be the triple crown champion. period.
also, Coburn apologised this morning on Good Morning America apparently. havent seen it but this asshole showed his true colors and even backed up his original stance the day after the Belmont. just trying to save face now IMO but this guy is a complete piece of shit.
