Nick,
The bottom line on this is that about a dozen guys here are handicappers. The rest of us are casual players. Of those casual players, about another dozen and a half seem to post any information of use to anyone.
Most of the posts are just guys picking teams. That is the way it is, and the way it will be. I suggested a couple years ago that Jack make a "paying members only" page of the forum, that more serious text and handicapping information could be shared.
I highly doubt that many people here follow anyone's information here, though. Most guys just place some plays, and hope they win, so the ass kissers can line up. Even though guys will sit around high-fiving each other, I doubt they really bet each others selections. We are too stubborn. "I'll be damned if I need this guys plays to make ME money."
I think the only guys using any plays in here, are the guys who lurk. They are the guys stopping in and looking for a certain poster, and maybe making a play off of his suggestion. Anyone who posts in here, is looking to feed their own ego. Period.
No, there is little substance in the form of handicapping for one reason, IMO.........
Most guys have no clue how to handicap!
There is almost no one here who makes money at this for two seasons in a row, let alone a carreer. I know that a bunch of you will line up and tell me I am full of shit, but we all know that aint so.
A vast majority of the guys who post here are lazy, unknowledgeable, egotistical, undisciplined, losers. That's the nature of the game, boys. You can't win in this business without sustained luck, and that is a fact. You must have more bounces go for you, than against you. (And that's if you actually know something about handicapping!)
I belive most guys in here pick up the sports page, or log on to ESPN.com, and look for a little tidbit here and there, and then post their "Play Of The Month!!!!!" They have no fukking clue what they are doing, but they are sports nuts, so that makes them a handicapper.
Has MadJack's gone to shit over the years? I'm not quite ready to say that, but the quality of posts has dwindled to a very noticable range. I still won't post at any of the other sites that I've been to, because they are too far gone, IMO.
Nick, the reason people post on so much other shit, and not handicapping information, is that they actually know something, or at least think they do, about those subjects. AND, telling someone Clinton this, or Bush that, is always a gray area. Only my say against yours. Telling a guy that Penn State is a lock, risks you looking a fool when they lose.
Worm,
Of course, I don't know you, but you have always rubbed me the wrong way. You are the prototypical "scamdicapper" with the way you run your act around here. When you first came here, you were all nicey-nice for about a week. Then, you post your big play. "This is a 5 unit play, and that's my biggest play, guys."
A week later, you come out with a 10 unit play. A few days later, the 25, 50 and 100 unit plays roll out. And a five unit play is your biggest? That's when you lost any credibility with me. But, the stooges around here ate it up! "Man....this guy hit 5 in a row, and this is a 100 unit play!.....I'm pounding it!" It loses, and it's "Oh, well."
You are always there to tell everyone what a great play you had when it wins, but you slink off into the background when you lose. That's classless, brother. People ask you for some reason behind your huge locks, and you poo poo them with any excuse you can for why you can't tell them. You say you are hitting 2 out of 3 this season? Great! I still say you flip coins. What is a "big play" for you, as opposed to a normal, small, whatever play? The big plays are the ones that win? People like you are the reson places like this suck.
In closing, I think that the timeline goes a little something like this:
These forums came to light about 5-6 years ago. Guys could thump their chest at how good they were, and there was no "history" to disprove their claims.
- These sites were new, and it gave guys a chance to show "their stuff" to others.
At first, the hard work was a little more evident. Guys actually thought they would do a little handicapping and say why they liked a game.
- After a while, guys realized that their plays were nothing special, and they started to flounder. They came out fresh with each new season, and found that winning just wasn't as simple as they though it was.
- The "handicapping" waned, and the social aspect of the forums cam to be.
Guys started talking more about personal, and social issues in their lives, as they became more of a "club" with the guys they have come to know.
- We are where we are today.
You have an old guard of people who realize that this game is near impossible to beat, yet they have many cyber friends whom they still wish to interact with, and this is the common ground.
You have the new guys who find the place, and have the same dreams that we did several years ago.
MadJack's is like a comfortable pair of shoes. Personally, I have made a few friends though this site, even though I have never met any of you. I like it here. I like it for all of it's aspects. I don't come here for sports information, like I used to. I come here because it is a place that feels good. That is because it is a community with plenty of things to offer besides hadicapping. I am sure many of you share this sentiment, and that is why you stay around.
