voice of reason
Lived in NYC for most of my life & never had an issue with the homeless....
But in SF it is different....
The last time that I was there the homeless were laying on the sidewalk in bulk....
At times we had to walk in the street because there were 6 or 7 laying on the sidewalk & covering the whole sidewalk....
One night a friend & I made a liquor run & there were about 15 to 20 homeless congregating around a store & we had to weave our way around them just to get into the store....
I can give you other examples but you get the point....
I'm sure you can imagine the frustration dealing with this if you live here. Of course at this point I am just accustomed to it. I try to take the approach that ChrryBlstr has and interact with everyone as a human first, regardless of their 'housing' situation. And I lean towards liking the grittier aspects of life anyway. But I am embarrassed that for a certain segment of visitors it is a "deal breaker" for my city. I get your complains, many many residents share them.
I feel like San Francisco (and some other cities that share these challenges) are "taking one for the team" by accepting homeless from all around the country (many who flock to these cities because of their good treatment and moderate weather). But in realitiy that is only a silver lining to this entire country's approach to mental health treatment. We don't (shouldn't?) have the ability to criminalize mental health, and don't have the willpower to compel the mentally ill to get treatment. So this is what we are left with.
So when San Francisco gets knocked for it's homeless problem my sometime's response is:
"Sorry (you're welcome?)"

LOVE San Fran! Definitely my favourite American city. And now that I'm actively seeking a T-T position, Berkeley's one of the top of my list.
Who knows, I may just end up there after all....amongst the homeless, of course!

:nono:
you are going to end up in the U.K. remember? Not that I need an excuse to visit there and its next up on our places to go, but if you are there then that's one more reason to get there....:toast:
No worries--have a sister-in-law in the Bay Area and we get out there every couple of years. If you end up there, the first round is on ImFeklhr....:mj07:
Well my town is on the ocean but we are just a humble 100,000. Just thought I would pump it up a bit. Plus if Hank ever comes to town there is a gay bar just for him.

You ever go to the Benchwarmer? I've played quite a few darts league games and drank too much vodka there.
Just looked up Ventura. Looks like a cool place, and only 20+ miles from Santa Barbara. And approx. 5 hours from LA (with traffic). HAHA! LOL
