What Should Be The 1st Things Done After Purchasing a New Computer?

Bought a very cheap bundle for the house to replace this Dell I have that is on it's last legs. Will be getting a laptop sooner or later and will be spending most of my online time on that.

I'm not very computer savvy. Figured I'd ask before moving ahead.

open a can of pop and do the following:

1) obviously turn it on and go through their stupid tutorial and agree to their licensing.

2)set up your router and dsl connection and make sure they are connected. if you are on dial up your computer isn't gonna be worthwhile anyway


2b) do a windows update through your control panel option. keep doing it until it says you are up to date. will require a lot of restarting and probably take a 1/2 hour.

3) make sure norton antivirus or whatever software came with it is turned on and register and run all updates with it. you don't have to scan now, but get all your definitions updated

4) download ad-aware and spybot. google it if you don't know the sites. run all the updates of that.

5) come to madjacksports and tell us how great the white sox are gonna be

Is there another outfit as acceptable to Norton?

Seems the whole planet has confidence in Norton. When I last updated Norton, that's when my problems started on my Dell and I was wondering if there are alternatives.

i edited my post. make sure you do 2b. the windows update is very important.

i use norton, never had a problem. i know mcaffee has one. there are others, i just have no knowledge of em

To be quite honest with you my past experiences have proven that it is usually best to Iron Man one before you start the initial set up as the 'porn anticipation' can leave one a bit sticky and uncomfortable. However if you must proceed I have a simple, yet effective way to see if it is the right time for porn.

My docking station is in my study and when I go in there the fat ass cat is usually right behind me to jump in my lap and start snoring like an Irish sailor on shore leave. He is very sensitive and when I start to get a bit randy......he usually gets uncomfortable, growls at me and jumps off my lap.............which is generally a pretty good 'barometer' if you will, of where I am at. Either that or I set off the motion detector, one of the two. :shrug:

believe it or not, I don't have a ton of patience

and I've alwaya had a knack at breaking anything mechanical or electronic just by touching it

I actually prefer a program called Autopatcher 2005 instead of Windows Update:

It takes all the same patches from Microsoft and makes it into a nice package. Check it out.
