Agree about NYC- damn, does that city smell in the summer. All those homeless pissing in the subways will do that. Chicago is not that bad as far as large, American cities go-- every big city on the East Coast is dirtier than Chi-town.

Agree about Prague and Budapest being much cleaner than when I first visited them. Before the wall came down in '87, both Prague and Budapest were soot filled and very dirty-- literally, there was a 1/4 inch of dirt all over everything. You couldn't see the ornate designs on the buildings that survived the World Wars.

Went back to both cities in '94, and Prague again in '96. Couldn't believe my eyes. Many of the formerly soot-covered buildings had been cleaned up and their unique designs could be seen again. Both cities lost a bit of their charm with all the international hotels and restaurants moving in, but overall, much cleaner than when I was 1st there.

DJV--

What? La Crosse clean? Don't believe it for a second......; Why, when I was there I saw at least 3 or 4 candy wrappers on the ground.

Oh I agree with Nolan about Newark/Jersey City. If you don't go there packing you are asking for trouble period!

Would not disagree with those that point to NYC as toilet bowl of U.S. Like most big cities, though, things can change dramatically from one block to another. Can't believe the bad rating for San Diego. This is obviously another case where you are talking about a relatively small area. Most people don't spend much time in downtown San Diego, anyway. Outside of downtown, San Diego is pretty nice. Also can't argue with those who say Fresno is a pit. San Diego county has some spectacular cities - La Jolla, Del Mar, Coronado Island. Newport Beach has, without a doubt, the best looking women wearing the least amount of clothes of any city in Southern California. Problem is that you need to be a millionaire to live there.

Phoenix?

Phoenix?

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Phoenix. I am moving late winter/early spring and Phoenix is on my list of possible choices. I have only been there a couple of times and it's been about four years. Something about it though I really like. Anyone in the forum from Phoenix?

Agree on Indianapolis...I was very impressed when I went to Conseco last year for a U2 concert. San Diego--stay north up the coast. Seattle--I think the people seemed more dirty than the town. Miami--can be scary...I lived in Ft. Lauderdale (West) for about six years...very nice and clean out there. One place I have heard good things about but never been is Kansas City.

Cheers,
M

I will NEVER EVER EVER move to a city that has a FOCKIN PAPER MILL in it PERIOD.
How could I forget?

My high school used to play at Rumford, ME. What a smelly stinky town. All paper towns are that way. The whole town smells all the time.

Also -- I've never been to a town where they process too many chickens, but my grandma used to live next to a chicken plant. That smell is unreal. They say there's ammonia or something in chicken shit. Places that process chickens aren't exactly "cities" though, are they.

I'm not sure which is worse about Gary; the extremely high murder rate or the horrific air quality due to the steel mills that completely pollute that city.

Hellah if you want to make the trip to DeKalb interesting, stop at the Skyway McDonald's in Gary. You can almost feel the gunshots.

As for bad smells, when the wind is blowing just right in DeKalb the stench of manure is overpowering. Enjoy the game!

I was in downtown Pittsburgh yesterday.

Drove right down Grant St. from one end to the other.

Nice place. People bustling everywhere and gals with beautiful legs.

Parked my vehicle down by the Strip District and walked to the Federal Bldg.

By the way Marine, your next duty station is on the 15th floor, Rm 1512. US. Marine Recruiting Station.

After leaving the Federal Bldg, I walked toward the Greyhound Bus Depot and someone even recognized me!

They said, "Hey buddy, got any spare change?"

Scottsdale,by far is the cleanest city I have ever been to. As a matter of fact it has been voted the most livable city for a few years by other city mayors.

Agree with Nolan about Newark, NJ. Last time I was there it was a real pig sty.

Agree with others about NYC as being a real dirty city. Still rather live in NY than Scottsdale. NYC, imo is still the best city in the world.

If there is one one worse than east st louis I'd like to see it.
Lived in St louis for years and would drive 20 miles out of way to keep from going thru that part of city.

Most pristine would be either Destin Fla or Crown Center a community inside Kansas City owned by Hall Mark cards.
Augusta golf course during Masters is quite unusual as mobs ofpeople but no litter. In case someone does drop wrapper by mistake they are died green so hard to notice. Don't even see cig butts on ground, make you feel like you'd be throwing them on someones carpet.

Brother Kosar: Had experience similiar to yours but in New Orleans.Went there to buy bunch of shrimp, was dark and bout out of gas in area outside of city that looked quite similiar to where movie No Mercy was shot.Yes it was tight :)

The disparaging post about San Diego is way off base. Being from Philly I can tell you first hand who is at the top of the list and who is at the bottom. And it's not even close...

Special consideration to Newark and Camden for their collective efforts...

Maybe San Diego has changed in the past few years. It was 9 years ago I was there and highly dissappointed.
Maybe it was just the streets I walked or the areas we went.
But at night walking down most streets we were hounded by homeless beggars looking for "coffee money". Parked our car to go walk around the beach and when we came back there were two bums standing there washing our window and demanding 5 bucks. and we were not even IN the car!

Just 2 years ago, I pulled off the free way at three different exit ramps. At each one there was at least one bum with a sign asking for change and litter and trash blowing everywhere.

Maybe its changed, or maybe I was just in the wrong area.
Just my opinion tho.

On another note. The absolutely, without a doubt, shittiest place I have ever lived was Okinawa, JA. The entire island is a dumping ground unless you go driving on the north side where it is 99% jungle. Rats run in the streets EVERYWHERE! and they are HUGE! Numerous times, we thought they were cats and dogs.
Many of the bars have dirt floors, piss, shit, everything you can imagine on them.

Marine, I have very fond memories of Okinawa.

As a young stud of a US Navy, 2nd class PO, I was with a beautiful young "lady of the night" on July 22, 1969.

We were in a hotel room about to engage in love-making when she requested we face the bottom of the bed.

I complied.

Just beyond the bottom of the bed was a dresser with an old black and white tv sitting on top.

She clicked on the tv set and her naked body looked beautiful in the bluish glow from the tv screen.

As we began to make love, we both watched and listened as a soon-to-be-very-famous American said,...

"This is one giant step for man. This is one giant step for mankind."
