Before reading this post please take into consideration that I am no journalist or master of the English language, so take the unproffessional nature of my thoughts with a grain of salt. These thoughts are also not bourne from this board alone but from the overall state of our country.
I don't understand why everyone is so up in arms on absolutely every subject that is brought to discussion these days. It seems that any subject from welfare, to the war in Iraq, to gas prices seems to ignite a fire in people's thoughts and words to follow. I have my views, and I usually stand by them. My views can also be altered by a well-reasoned discussion. I think, for the most part, I have steered clear of being labeled as one of the neo-Nazis in here, but I think everyone knows that I am a Republican and fairly conservative in nature.
On that point, I think being a Republican or Democrat is hogwash. If I was a Democrat, then I would be considered very conservative. Since I am Republican, I am considered somewhat liberal. But that's for another day. To ME, what being a Republican means is that I believe that humans are self-sufficient beings, and everyone should be given the opportunity to be so. I believe that is what the America that our forefathers created stod for. If I choose to not become educated, and I am stuck working a job making just enough to eat, then that is what I choose. If I choose to better myself through the means that are available, then I should be able to reap those rewards. One of my main goals in life is to personally be a part of raising $10M for charities over the course of my life and leave behind a some form of scholarship fund for those behind me. What the Republican party means to me is that this country has opportunities given. I can either choose to take on the challenges or not, but I have to take whatever consequences come along with my decision. I do not need my government to tell me who and when to give my money. Every penny that the government takes out of my pocket is wasted money. I could turn every dollar that they take into a hundred where the government is wasting it on overblown government spending. When I do turn that money into more, I should have the choice to distribute the sum in the fashion that I want. If I choose to be greedy and keep it, then it is my prerogative. I am the one who earned it. I, personally, look forward to sharing my future wealth, but once again that should be my choice.
This entire thought process is reliant upon the fact that people are given equal opportunities to survive. I don't think it is the burden of our entire country to bear when two people on welfare decide to have 12 children. Those 12 children are most likely going to be on welfare for the remainder of their lives because they are not shown that they can provide for their own well-being. I believe that the path we are on is just a downward spiral that we can never recover from.
To be a Democrat, to ME, is to say that people need protection and the government is the body who should provide that. Regardless of the effort put in by individuals, they should have the right to share the wealth that this country has built. To ME, Democrats want to say "we know best how to spend your money, give us as much as we want, and WE will distribute how we see fit". This sounds good on paper, but my personal thoughts are that we build segregation that way, and the majority of the people receiving the handouts will be receiving those handouts until the day they leave this life. The reason I feel this way is that our government does not demand anything from these idividuals when they receive anything. Stick your hand out, and we will fill it up. Come back next week, and we will do it again. Why can't we require that the people receiving handouts perform some function for the good of our country to continue to receive them?
The way our country draws the line in the sand is exactly what our current political parties want. We let the issues and our views on them stand in the way of us actually accomplishing anything by working together. The only people making out like bandits on this thing are the politicians. They are not held accountable on any issue. They are not monitored in their spending (this refers to Congress more so than the big office). And our country suffers because of it.
For the most part, all of us want the same things. We want ourselves and our families to be safe from harm; we want to have life's necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter; we want to look back on our lives and see that we made a difference (no matter how small or large).
I believe:
- in a higher power and I choose to exercise this through the Christian faith
- in an individual's ability to provide for their own well-being
- in the right to life from conception to natural death
- that the majority of people want the same things
- we are just a part of the world economy. Until we come together and find our place in it, then we are going to continue to lose ground. Losing a few thousand industry jobs may hurt in the short-term, but it is meaningless in the big picture. We, as a country, have suffered through much worse things. We have to bear down and make ourselves better.
- that I am done.
Flame on.
