You see a shirt for $97, you borrow 50 from Mom, 50 from Dad = $100. You buy the shirt, have $3 change. You give 1 to Mom, 1 to Dad and keep 1. So you owe 49 to mom 49 to dad. So 49 + 49 = 98, 98 and your 1 makes 99 . Where is the missing 1?

you're not adding your 1, you are taking it away. 98 - 1 = 97, the price of the shirt

if you're paying for the shirt and keeping 1 dollar , you are essentialy borrowing 98 bucks

giving back 1 buck each makes it a 100

So, you only borrowed 98, spent 97 on the shirt and kept 1 for yourself. Makes sense.

Give them the $97 shirt and the $3 change and tell them good luck trying to get the $97 back.
