I am a Nam vet. I was spit on when I came back to the states. We could have won that war anytime we wanted if we just dropped the bomb. The government didn't want to because we would kill many children and women and look bad to the world. We were to soft hearted. I'm not saying that was bad but we lost and the people we were fighting for, are now under their rule. We have already pulled our troops out of a major city in Iraq and it's now full of bad guy's. I just don't see how we can beat these crazy people who care nothing about life, family, and they are not afraid of death. I understand they are only 30,000 or so rebels compared to the millions who want freedom. The problem is, the 30,000 or so are wrapped within the millions who want their freedom. How do we ever get to rebels without hurting or killing the millions,who want their freedom? Who can help, Bush or Kerry? I personally feel we can never defeat the terrorist completely but we can curtail their activities.

David No One will ever stop the terrorist completely--even if Iraq turns out to be in best case scenario it will just prove greater threat to terrorist and they will pull all stops.
I think key is Iraqi people and how much they want it. The people here and the setting is quite different in viet nam. The people in Iraq are very vocal and emotional in comparison to iet Nam. However they do not think in rational terms but religious ideas trumps all others. Most do not like the occupation yet when terrorist reak havoc and kill their people they say we are not protecting them??? They can't have it both ways. I think the determining factor on how this and fight against terroris every where pans out is if terrorist continue to target them more and more.So far it appears that they think it is better to be slaughtered by people of there own faith than be occupied by the west--however I believe that is beginning to change. Case in point--Pakistan population in general was usualy non vocal to any terrorist activity despite how gruesome--however the terrorists crossed the line there a few days ago and bomb a mosque and thousands of Shites have come out in protest.So maybe----

Saigon was a R&R for all the service people and we treated the people there and was treated with great respect.
