1-2 Cigars a week, a lot more during March Madness. Love the new Black series from Partagas and Juelitta. Hate Mac's.

MadJack, you can do it! I started at 18 smoked until I was 31 quit cold turkey and that was 28 years ago. My lungs should be clean by now. I like you, set a future date and stuck to it. Gained some weight but my doc says I'd be better off in the long run. Quit March 5, 1977 @ 10:05 p.m.! Never forget that I guess. Go for it!

you know what's sad? It's sad when somebody elderly is in the hospital from a smoking related malady. They have COPD, and the damage is done. The worst part is, that's when they have to quit, and by then, it does no good. Even folks that aren't old and are sick with COPD that can't smoke are sad too. All those years they didn't quit, now they're laid up in the hospital, and the most comforting thing to them would be a cigarette which is denied to them. Most hospitals are smoke free now, but for these people, it's too late. Might as well let them smoke. Hell, what more harm could it do?? I see it all the time, and really, it's rather heartbreaking. I've never smoked, but I like DTB think there's an unfair desparity when it comes to smokers. Heck, the patients who smoke here can't even wheel out to a gazeebo outside the hospital. They're just SOL because the whole campus is tobacco free. Would be like a 500 pound patient who's in for a total knee replacement (because they're so damn fat) being denied food. Not fair for sure. Guys, try to quit before this happens.

Jack and all who join him,

You WILL look at March 20th as one of the best days of your life!!
Right now the tobacco companies OWN YOU! Thats how I looked at it and I was very pissed off..I don't know how some can not get hooked on nicotine...but I sure was and I was owned...helping to pay those fat bastards at MO their hefty dividends.
Jack, DO NOT worry about the weight...first 2 or 3 weeks then take it off...I'm 15 pounds lighter now then when I quit. I quit once before about 10 years ago for a year....Last time was much tougher. ....I made the mistake thinking that I could be a casual smoker...............That was that... 1st drag and back to where I was.
Jack...I lost my father to lung cancer and my mother to emphysema ..............NOT GOOD.....You are still young at 51 perfect time and your lungs will be pink by the time you are my age! Go get em!

Started smoking when i was about 15, i am now 49. It was new years day 06 just a month and a half back, was doing some cooking on the grill outside for a new years day party.

Was very busy trying to get things done before my guest arrived and reached in my pocket for a cig and went into a panic for i only had 2 cigs left.

Well i live out of town in the country about 6 miles from the store. Before i realized it i was in my truck going up the drive trying to hurry and get some damn cigs and it dawned on me what a fawking fool i am for the only reason i was going to the store was to get some cancer sticks.
I turned the truck sround went back to the house and waited 2 hours and smoked that last cig and have not touched one since. whenever i get the urge i try think of that day and it helps me get past the urge.

i smoked a bout a pack a day until then, hopefully i am done with them. :fingerc:
GOOD LUCK TO ALL THAT QUIT.

i'm quitting the day after my birthday. GUARANTEED! nothing will get me to go back this time.

I hope you do. It's a nasty habit.

I live in California and we have had smoke-free bars and restaurants for a few years now. It's so nice to go home and not smell like cigarettes after watching a game or going to a club.

I personally have never smoked and I refuse to go out with a girl who smokes......the old line "would you lick an ashtray"?

So few people smoke around here anymore, that it's rare to see someone smoking. I really notice the smoke the most when I go to Vegas. All the casinos allow smoking and it reminds me of how Calif. used to be.

Everyone knows the health risks involved. I can only imagine the dichotomy as your urge conflicts with your mindset. I have had friends attempt to quit but couldn't quite make the grade. One lady I know simply put them down and said that is my last cigarette.......she's never smoked since. It's different for people but it demands a strong will and determination. I hope those of you who are planning on quitting are successful....for your healths sake.

Question Jack, if your going to quit why wait till March????????????? Seems I hear this alot (setting a date), and people tend to find an excuse why they didn't quit. I know it's a tough habit to break but if your serious about quiting toss um right now...Tomorrow might be too late.. Good luck to all on stopping!

Nicotine is a bitch. I've smoked maybe 20 cigarettes in my life, but chew a tin of Cope a day.

My paternal Grandma died of Emphysema about 10 years ago. She smoked until the day she went to the hospital for the last time. She would drag her oxygen tank around the house smoking a cigarette.

Paternal Grandpa was diagnosed with kidney cancer 15 years ago, had one removed, quit smoking right then using the gum and is still alive.

Maternal grandma died of lung cancer.

Dad diagnosed with emphysema 5 years ago. Quit smoking, but the damage done. Needs oxygen most of the time and is in and out of the hospital. He chews the gum nonstop.

Needless to say, all the above were heavy smokers.

Maternal grandpa was a heavy cigar smoker for 75 years, but died from unrelated factors at 91.

Thought I would chime in on this
I WORK for a tobacco company...
I smoke about 1-2 packs a day.
You would be surprised that about only 2 in 10 smoke with this company.... You are almost shunned if you do (ironic doncha think)
I have tried to quit but just can't (weak I know)
I have had cancer and gone through chemo too..
(not lung related)
Smoked through the whole thing except when I was hospitalized for 4 days..
Tough habit to stop.. I guess its all of our compulsive personalities..
If every one else on here trys (MadJacks smoke out)
Count me in
Maybe even a pool.. we all will pay and be honest right?????

Quit on Jan 1 as a news years resolution.

So far cold turkey and I still would like to smoke one right now.

I made a promise to my wife, and that was that I am going to stop now but if I live to be 75 I am going to pick up cigs and cigars and smoke my ass off until I die.

I will be a happy man smoking after every meal, enjoying a cigar on the porch, and of course two cigarettes after sex.

I think I will die a happy man.

OK I'm in--Start thread day of your birthday Jack and we'll use for support like back when Bear quit--he is my inspiration on getting job done and feeling better.
It certainly is ridiculous that with all the things that can kill us we have no control over-that supposedly intelligent people can't rectify things they can control.

Think March is pefect time--we can look forward to really smelling spring and breathing in fresh air-spring is time everything comes alive--and hopefully that will include us. ;)
