Above the Clouds....
All I hear is "alleged to have said it and not confirmed".

Just heard on National News that he did admit to saying it.

"the bunker"
Did Sterling admit to saying those things? ( don't get me wrong of course he did).

All I hear is "alleged to have said it and not confirmed".

it`s all been resolved...smurphy just e mailed me and said he`d take over the team for a (phe)nominal fee......he also said he`d have a better looking girlfriend who couldn`t tape his conversations because he promises to keep his mouth shut unless it`s on her "mommy part"......

not the "government" in this case...but the message is clear....think inappropriate thoughts or say inappropriate things and you may lose your livelihood....who gets to decide who gets pilloried?...the media?...some small, radical activist group?....

i agree that`s not actually the case here... the guy`s obviously an asshole...and the almost universal condemnation of him speaks volumes as to where the large majority of public opinion falls on this(which also speaks volumes about where we are as a society)...

I have no problem with this yokel getting a public flogging......what I do have a problem with was the recent brandan eich/ mozilla flap in which he was forced out of his job because he had the temerity to contribute to a campaign that was against gay marriage in cali....

what made it even worse was the fact that he contributed years ago when pres. Obama took the same stance on traditional/gay marriage......

I find that kind of retroactive absolutism scary.......salem-like.....

what say you about the eich issue, imf?
It's tricky. I understand the concern about a slippery slope where everyone is one unpopular opinion away from being fired. But so far, these situations have been focused on people with very prominent, public facing, leadership positions. I think that if you are keen to be part of the executive management team of a large company and yet still involve yourself in controversial political positions you are setting yourself up for trouble. Particularly if you are on the side of a debate that is in favor of restricting rights to certain groups of people and which is becoming increasingly less popular by society at large. It is just not in the best interest of the company you represent to be exposed to such controversy. It?s bad for business.

Now if this sort of condemnation becomes so widespread that average Joe Auto Mechanic or Walmart clerk is losing his job because of his viewpoints on politics then we would have a problem. But realistically there are*already* so many bullshit reasons to get fired if you are poor or middle class. You can lose your job for a myriad of non-performance related reasons. Forget about political contributions and racist behavior being required for termination. The average worker should *be* so lucky that the primary risk to their job is some microscopic focus into their personal lives.

I personally hate anyone being treated unfairly, have never blindly accepted the concept of ?life isn?t fair?. So if the collective consciousness of society begins to adversely bully segments of society because of unpopular beliefs, I will voice my outrage. Yet, I?ve always felt being an asshole *shouldn?t* have zero consequences. And, as a society, if we are moving forward from a legacy in which various minorities have unjustly had their professional ?livelihoods? negatively affected by prejudice, to a point where the bad actions of the elite and rich are costing THEM some money and respect, well then I think we are going to be OK.
(PS: I don?t think we are going to be OK. We are doomed, and this is hell?? but not because of this topic)
