WASHINGTON -- In the wake of Friday's mass killing at an elementary school in Connecticut, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said Sunday that she plans to introduce an assault weapons ban bill on the first day of the new Congress.

"I'm going to introduce in the Senate, and the same bill will be introduced in the House -- a bill to ban assault weapons," Feinstein said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

The shocking murder of 26 children and adults in Newtown, Conn., on Friday has sparked a national discussion on gun control, with mostly Democratic legislators saying laws need to be tightened.

President Bill Clinton signed an assault weapons ban into law in 1994, but the measure expired a decade later. Democrats have tried several times since then to renew the ban, without success.

Feinstein called for the ban to be renewed after the mass shooting in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater that killed 12 people and injured 58 others.

"Who needs these military-style assault weapons? Who needs an ammunition feeding device capable of holding 100 rounds?" Feinstein wrote on her campaign website. "These weapons are not for hunting deer -- they?re for hunting people."

On Sunday Feinstein laid out details of the bill.

"It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession, not retroactively, but prospectively," and ban the sale of clips of more than ten bullets, Feinstein said. "The purpose of this bill is to get... weapons of war off the streets."

Feinstein would not comment on whether President Obama had failed to lead on gun control. "He is going to have a bill to lead on," she said.
....................................................................

its sad to say but there is a political tone to this

what party will fight this tooth and nail to not pass ever??????????

Fillibuster and bawk until the cows come home.

its the same party stopping the fiscal cliff and getting things done for the good in America.

so who are the gun lobbys deep in the pockets of

pity really

The most disappointing thing about this thread is there are people expressing opinions and asking for actions to be made to ban all guns, and do not understand what it is they are asking to be banned. Not just in this thread, but society in general.

They say- ban all guns!
Then say- what do those calibre numbers mean? Why do some guns look different than others?

Educate yourselves. As we can clearly see, the media is grossly unreliable and inaccurate in attempting to report this.

Who in this thread has been asking to ban all guns?

It seems that the majority of people are looking for stricter gun laws.

And it seems the pro gun crowd spends the majority of its time accusing the other side of wanting to ban all guns when clearly that is not the case.

It may be, but I haven't read one post calling for banning of all guns.

I am glad it was not just me seeing that.

It seems like a cop out from the pro gun side to not allow a conversation about stricter gun control to occur by just immediately accusing everyone of wanting to ban all guns.

And as I have asked before- when you look at the gun control laws currently in place in CT, what changes to those laws would prevent this?

*note: this answer requires you to look up what the current gun control laws are.

What does this have to do with you trying to make it sound like everyone is demanding banning all guns?

I honestly do not will work in stopping shit like this from happening, all I know is that we have to try and do something. An open debate about it would be a nice start without people like you trying to put words into everyones mouths.

All I know is other countries have stricter gun laws and they do not have the amount of problems we do.

Again I have no idea what the right answers are to this question but we need to try and figure this out. Its clear that we need more mental health care for our citizens.

There also has to be some sort of psychological screening and weapons training before you are allowed to purchase a gun.

I think it is safe to say that we will be reading about another big shooting before the year is out.

Yeah this is just not about CT.

Its about the fact we have been going through these events almost once every two months, with smaller incidents like the portland mall shooting every few weeks.

We need to try and figure something out because we should not live in a society where children are not safe in kindergarten.

[Updated at 2:40 p.m. ET]

NEWTOWN, Conn.--St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church was evacuated during its noon mass due to an anonymous threat made by phone.

"I'm going to kill everyone there. My friend didn't finish the job," said a caller to the church, the Washington Post reported.

Yahoo News was nearby when patrolmen and SWAT officers surrounded the church with weapons drawn.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., the pastor informed churchgoers that there was a threat, and they would have to leave the church, according to a pair of churchgoers who were evacuated. Police formed a perimeter around the church and several adjacent buildings. The media, which had been barred from attending the services at St. Rose but were camped out across the street, swarmed to capture footage of the chaotic scene.

Approximately a dozen police and SWAT team members surrounded a white building just west of the church, taking cover behind trees with guns drawn.

A Newtown police officer declared the scene was "clear" at approximately 1:15 p.m., but declined to answer any questions about the threat.

The Newtown Police Department headquarters also declined to comment on why officers rushed to the church.

"No, we don't have any information on that," a hurried police dispatcher told Yahoo News.

It was the second threat in as many days for the church. According the Washington Post, St. Rose put up posters on Saturday for parishioners to express their grief. However, an unknown prankster wrote, "This is just round one," on one of the posters, the pastor said.

By 2:30 p.m. the church had closed its doors and cancelled their evening mass.

Well, everyone wants to point at guns, because it doesn't take much deep thinking. People died. Killers used guns. Guns are bad.

I want to know why we are seeing what, at least on the surface, seems like a very high uptick in these shootings over the past two decades?

As unpopular as a theory as it might be to some, I still think doping up these kids like zombies for 3/4s of their lives, might just have some ill-effects down the road.

I've watched this news coverage on and off over the last 48 hours. The one bad thought that keeps popping up to me is, "This would be the perfect time for another nut case to wipe out a hundred people on live tv."

One day, this will happen.

Now if there is something wrong with a kid they just shove pills down their throats. There is no concern with actually trying to fix the child its more about doctors pushing prescriptions at children.

I agree that it could have something to do with some of these shootings. Mental health care in this country is pitiful.

Then of course you have the people like the 60 year old guy who just got busted planning a school shooting.

I'm telling you it's all the media coverage out there that's encouraging it. My theory is that for all of time there has been a certain fringe element with a screw or two loose. The difference is that back then, when they may have had these crazy thoughts, like hey, I'd really like to shoot my boss and my coworkers....they then followed it up with, nah, that's a little too crazy.

However with the internet and media in our faces 24x7, these sickos gain fame, even postmortem. It emboldens other people out there who have deranged thoughts to actually go through with it. They find message boards online to encourage them, other people out there who think the same thing...in a way they believe they become martyrs for others. This is all a result of the culture we've created IMO. And the scary thing is that if my theory holds any weight, it's just going to keep progressing. For example....they keep emphasizing the fact that the CT massacre was just shy of the deadliest in the US. I guarantee you there are multiple others out there who would use that as motivation to kill even more in their own rage.

The media needs to give that fuck who did this very little coverage. It should focus on the victims, their community, their families. But that's not what sells or picks up the most traffic, is it.

Between The Hedges
Fact of the matter is that rifles, much less the Red Herring "assault rifles", are responsible for a very small number of homicides in this country. So in a few years when it is obvious that this ban has not gotten the intended results what is the next move. Using the current discussion it would be to ban more guns, and the obvious target would be pistols, all semi-automatics, and the such. I couldn't care less if they ban "assault rifles", but pretending that will bring an end to this type of horrific action is ignoring the facts at best, and political posturing at worst.
