Let's talk about Hughes at the end of the season. You really need a bigger sample set. One of these two "REALLY bad" starts was his first start EVER (totally jacked up), and the other was his return from an injury (semi-jacked up). His other 2 starts he has given up only 4 hits and 1 run in 12 innings.
MC, have you watched this kid throw yet? His stuff is filthy. He is certainly not ready to be an ace this year with limited pitch counts and innings. However, the injury may have been a blessing in disguise as he will now be able to throw in the post-season. Mark my words, Hughes and Chamberlain are going to have something to say as the pennant race chugs along. It was no coincidence that while Hughes and Chamberlain were mowing down the Injuns, Gagne(who the Yankees incidentally did NOT trade for, specifically NOT to give up Chamberlain, but also so they would be able to promote him.) was chitting his guts out in Baltimore, blowing a 4-run lead. Full disclosure: I am a Yankee fan since birth.
Say what you want about their pitching, this team is white hot right now. Their starting staff has gotten shored up in the past 2 months. I would gladly go to war with Clemens, Mussina, Pettitte, Hughes, and Wanger. Much better than the early season debacle of Sean Henn, Karstens, Chase Wright, Darrell Rasner, and fing Igawa. You want to name me a top 5 that is that good? I am sure you could pick a top 3 that is better. But top to bottom that's a solid staff.
Your argument about the Yankees being the worst bet in baseball holds true only if you have been betting them since April 1. They have trimmed almost 2/3 off of where that deficit is, and I would hazard a guess that they are the most profitable team since July 1.
This team has youth. Melky and Cano, Hughes and Chamberlain. The energy needed in the post-season that the Yanks have so sorely been lacking the past few years. This is Cashman's grand plan. And it's great to watch it happen. They will make the playoffs. And they will advance. It's gonna be a hell of an ALCS.
