 WTF?

i guess they're mosquitos. they look like but big.

last spring we had a few and i even saw them at the golf course but now they have multiplied ridiculously.

they just lay in the grass until you walk through and then they fly around like crazy.

anybody have any idea what they are and how to get rid of them? i imagine they'll be gone as soon as it gets colder but they'll only be back next spring.

they don't bite, they're just annoying.

If they aren't biting, and bigger than normal, they are Caddis Flies.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
Those are crane flies in your picture. Scroll to bottom of this page here for info.

Tho in the same sub-family as mosquitos, they are harmless. Spraying won't help as they'll just fly in at will from all over toward your lights.

edit: the adults will fly in...turns out the larvae can be a turf pest. From wiki:

Their larvae, called "leatherjackets", "leatherbacks", "leatherback bugs" or "leatherjacket slugs", because of the way they move, consume roots (such as those of turf grass) and other vegetation, in some cases causing damage to plants. The crane fly is occasionally considered a mild turf pest in some areas. In 1935, Lord's cricket ground in London was among the venues affected by leatherjackets: several thousand were collected by ground staff and burned, because they caused bald patches on the wicket and the pitch took unaccustomed spin for much of the season.

help with mosquitos

help with mosquitos

I own a driving range and had a similar problem. I bought a mosquito 86 which is a blower and backpack. It cost about $200 but has been well worth it. Google Mosquito 86 to learn more.

those aren't mosquitos that you have pictured.

If you do have a mosquito problem, you can have your lawn sprayed professionally for not too much charge. Make sure there is no standing water anywhere in the vicinity either.
