I want to put a fence around the back yard and it's a job I can probably do, I've put up small sections of fence/post/gate before and think I can handle it. My question is about the gas and water lines. I called the number to have PA1Call come out and mark the lines like I am supposed to do but all they did was come out and:

Spray paint the water shut off valve blue and draw an arrow pointing toward the street.
Spray paint the gas shut off valve yellow and draw an arrow pointing toward my house.

Question, what fucking good did that do? I know where the shut off valves are, what I need to know is where the lines are that go from those valves to the house. I know, 100% they do not run in a straight line from where they marked to the house so how do I dig and not bust a gas/water line?

Otherwise, it's a 3.5 foot high fence so 6 foot high posts will do it (right?) so I'm digging post holes 24 inches deep, are the gas/water lines buried deeper than that so it really isn't a concern?

MISS UTILITY SHOULD MARK JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING ..

IF YOU ARE GOING 2 FOOT DEEP I WOULDN'T DIG W/OUT ALL LINES MARKED..

IF YOU CAN WAIT TIL TUES. I WOULD CALL THEM BACK OR FIND THOSE WHO SHOULD MARK THEM.

YOU CAN IF YOU ARE VERY VERY VERY CAREFULL POSTHOLE DIG THOSE 2 FEET..

WHAT WE CALL SOFT DIG..I DON'T RECOMMEND IT BUT CAN BE DONE..

2 FOOT DEEP...HUMM..AT LEAST HALF BAG CRETE PER HOLE EVEN A LITTLE MORE..

4X4 COME IN 8 FOOTERS I WOULD SET THEM ALL AND THEN LEVEL OFF EACH ONE WITH A reciprocating saw

WHEN YOU START TRUSTING WORK BEFORE YOU BAD THINGS HAPPEN..BROKE A MANY A TV CABLE LINE IN MY DAY NOT WAITING ON MISS UTILITY...

USE GOOD SCREWS IF USING WOOD

I'm not doing the actual job today, I just went out and marked where the fence is going. I'm calling them for safety reasons obviously because maybe there is something buried I don't know about, but the utilities come in from the front street to the house and I'm just putting the fence in the backyard so mostly I'm just trying to keep the local municipality from giving me grief should they drive by and want to know if I called 1Call or not.

Any insight on what the markings mean? I mean, I know where the shut offs are, hell, they stick out of the ground, I can see them. I need to know how the lines get to the house or if for some reason they cut through my backyard to the people across the alley, etc...

Just spray painting the shutoff doesn't really help me.
