My funeral opinion:
1. Hate them. Much like your original comment I went to a friends when I was in my early 20's and got totally bummed out.
2. I always send a card or online condolence even to casual friends. I've lost both parents and a sister and know how much that little thought means.
3. I never send flowers but often donate money to some charitable organiztion.
4. The trouble with occassionally going, someone is going to notice that you went to one but not another. You end up getting trapped, so I never go.
5. Let's face it. It's as uncomfortable for the family of the deceased as it is for the viewing public. My father had a rather large funeral and how many different answers can one give to the comment,"I'm sorry, if there is anything I can do just ask." or "What happen? I just saw him the other day"
6. My belief is that if i don't physically go to a funeral home. It's like this special person in my life has just moved away. We remember them as they lived not as they looked in a coffin. As we age there are many in our lives who move and we never see again anyways.
7. The worst funerals are the young ones. For some reason, people want to make them out to be martrys or something. I hate it when I see decals on cars commemorating the deaths of teenagers whose lifestyles led to their premature deaths
