I'm 64.
Started smoking at about 13, maybe earlier. Smoked for 44 years, about 2 or 3 packs a day. Couldn't breathe, coughing up phlem. Got so bad that i was taking Primatine asthma pills to open up my lungs so I could smoke. I stopped almost 7 years ago. After 4 times trying the patch it finally worked. I feel fine now. I can breathe again but the 30 pounds I gained are still with me.

Beer and cigarettes
Coffee and cigarettes
I thought I could never do it! Boy do those things go together!
Like bread and butter.......It was a ritual for me...Put the coffee on...shower etc and get started.........killing myself...I loved it!
Pop that first Budweiser.....and open a new pack of Merit menthol 100s.......Does it get any better? WHAT AN ILLUSION!!!..... I was totally OWNED!!
ADDICTED AND OWNED............Worse ....I was paying thousands for the privilege.
DRINKING........I estimate that I had, in the neighborhood of 50,000 beers (i'm sure there are those who have done worse) from late teens till late 40s...and in the neighborhood od 500 in the last 10 years........Alcoholism is NOT TO BE GLORIFIED....Wow! if any have had to live with it or are making others live with you (as an alcoholic).........I hope you recognize the problem and take the appropriate steps (its bad) Further, an alcoholic's death is no fun!
I am very happy with where I am now.. Gambling for a hobby....
(not lots of $) more a challenge to WIN... NO MORE SMOKING!!
and Drinking when my wife and I go out to dinner (never more than 2) I can't handle more than that anymore. Coffee is great (even without the smokes)... I feel for the young guys who get off on the drinking though (seen too much)..I'm drunk" "I was still drunk" like its a badge of macho or something.
Oh well, I know I'm preaching and I'll zip it!
I feel GREAT about so many committing to the "smokeout"
You're going to LOVE life without the cigarettes. My only regret is that I should have done it sooner..

Are you serious? No freaking way! That's either some weaka$$ weed (which is even worse) or you're the HighTime's poster child. Still don't see how it is even possible to smoke a quack in one day. You get to a point where it just stops working and you're in some lame-ass veggie coma looking for a couch to lay on for the next 3hours. I mean, I could see it happening a day here or there if you are on spring break or in some 'power lung' competition, but everyday. Dude good luck with this and I'll pull a hitter for you.

Myself -

Don't understand the whole smoking cig thing - what does it truly do for you? At least with smoking weed or drinking there is a body altering/impairing event taking placing. Cigs, you just get to stand outside with other jokers or use it as some lame pick-up line. And to you part-timers -- get your own freaking lighter!!!!

Nicotine has a calming -relaxing effect--and would not be surprised if some day results show benefits in those areas--however the transportation mode via smoke is the killer--if I was chewer would not be nearly as concerned--on the smoking part I think COPD is an eventual certainty to some degree--as far as cancer I think it more genetic but smoking will certainly speed up process-just my opinion.
Interesting part on drinking Bear. Drank a lot in my youth but not much after 20's which was fortunate because on the 3 or 4 occasions I did drink excessively during year I was absolute asshole.
Would have complete personality (aggresive) change.
Was odd as didn't care much about drinking but did the rum and coke thing and if occasion ever occurred where I drank 3--it was over for rest of night as it made me hyper and I would not quit till bars closed.
Missed my garage on one occasion bout 15 years ago--and thought about it next day and said enough. Still drink a beer or 2 when I play golf --and maybe have had 1 rum and coke on handful of occasions during those years--but never consider reaching the 3 limit. Was easiest thing I ever did--never a concern or thought about it--if smoking would only be so simple.

"Will have a cigar after filing frivolous lawsuits. Usually two or three partagas a week."

Ever tried soaking cigars in cider before smoking them. Heard that was a legal enity tradition. :)

Surprised there aren't any other tobacco pipe smokers in here. I love it as a hobby, though recognize it is super bad for me. Totally agree with the calming effect of smoking, despite the fact that it is a stimulant.

I have a collection of about 10-15 pipes (some of which are cheapies, others are more pricey), and love hobby aspect of it.
Have a few favorite blends from a local tobacconist, but am always on the prowl for something new.

I know I will have to quit someday, so just enjoying it while I can. Same with the almost daily Makers Mark/JD. <sigh>

Dont smoke cigs but do smoke cigars on ocassion. have a good friend from domincan rep. and he owns a cigar company. Usually has some good stuff. Smoke a little weed every now and then but not much.

this is odd and my friends laugh but i have taken a chew of skoal for about 20 years before i go to bed. started in 7th grade when i was hiding it from my parents and has continued. dont need it any other time but if dont take a chew before bed will not be able to sleep. tried to stop this several times and just lay awake all night. totally crazy

Wow can't believe all the smokers here, I would have never believed it especially in the face of what it does to your health.

OK, now I will preach a little. I have never had a cigarette or cigar in my mouth. I'm 58 yrs old. I did try the weed in college, but since inhaling was not my thing, that ended that real quick.

So I don't know the tobacco addiction, but I do know the food addiction. And to be sure it can be just as bad trying to lose weight and yes both can kill you, but tobacco is much more lethal IMO.

IT IS GREAT TO HEAR JACK AND OTHERS GOING TO TRY IT AGAIN, I remember the last time this happened with Bear and I guess Bear was the only one who made it.

But why are you waiting till Mar 20th, I know you won;t like to hear this, but that is just a procrastination of over a month and half. IF YOUR SERIOUS YOU NEED TO START NOW NOT SOME ARBITRARY DATE IN THE FUTURE ESP THAT LONG AWAY.

Take it from the king of procrastination in the diet field, it doesn't work. START NOW AND SAFE YOUR LUNGS AND BODY 6 WEEKS OF DAMAGE.

GOOD LUCK TO ANYONE TRYING TO KICK. MY PARENTS BOTH WERE HEAVY SMOKERS AND BOTH ARE GONE, IT'S A NASTY HABIT.

Holy chit Jack am I glad to hear you are quitting!! Been on your ass since I quit. I smoked 1.5 packs a day for 12 years, and quit cold turkey a little over a year ago for those that dont know. Very, very hard, dont kid yourself this will be one of the most difficult things you ever do. There hasnt been one day since I quit that I havent wanted one or thought about it. Its all mental, just get it in your head. Would be great to see a few of you guys do it together!!

Good luck!

DAMN! I was way off on this one. I had you pegged around 30-35.

Jack--You will do it this time. For me, it was just a matter of really saying that I was quitting for good, and that I would never smoke again. Before, I would always say that I would probably smoke again at some point. "when i drink", "during the holidays", etc.

I think the #1 aspect is your brain stating for a fact that you no longer are a smoker, and that you will never be one again. If you don't have this attitude, I think the "well, when I got a divorce I started smoking again" or "when my mom passed away, I was stressed and I started smoking again" or "I got laid off, so I started smoking again". These thoughts will supercede your desire to not smoke unless you are 100% convinced that you no longer smoke no matter what!

Best of luck to everyone on becoming a non-smoker!

Smoke about a cigar a week when hitting the golf course Spring - Fall, but quit smoking cigarettes for good 10 years ago this May.

Father in law bought me a half box of the Padron 64 Anny for my wedding (he stole the other half). Been a big fan of the Fuente Fuente Opus X (Robusto preferably) as well, but with its explosion in popularity, these are hard to come by. For cheap sticks, partial to flavored ones like the Cuban Honeys, though tried some of the Acid sticks on my trip to Myrtle beach in January, not too bad. Prefer to buy one great box at the beginning of the golf season though, anyone knows where I can get the OX real cheap, I'm all ears! And by real cheap, I mean marked up less than 300%
