I put this movie in my Netflix queue two weeks ago. I don't know what number it is, but I am looking forward to it.

I basically agree with StevieD, but I think his hatred of Republicans slants his statement a little much.

From what I understand that I am going to see is a documentary on a very right-wing sect of Christianity. I am a fully practicing Catholic, and if my assumption is correct about this movie it does not represent reality for most Christians.

There are always going to be crazies in the world.

smurphy has it right that the truly sad thing about a situation like this is that these kids are brainwashed and don't have much of a chance at a normal life. Sad.

Dawgball, I don't hate Republicans. I hate Neocons. But we can put that aside. I would hope that this Jesus Camp is something we can agree on. As someone who loves Jesus I am mad as Hell that this is going on.

Dawg,

Right now, Jesus Christ is central my life. If you don't mind me asking, was your above statement made in context of Jesus Camp? If so, in what way? Personally, I don't think Jesus Camp is a bad thing. Brainwashing? If you believe the bible is true, then it's not. It's merely raising a child in light of the word of God. The child rearing tactics may appear aggressive, but if the method used produces a child who loves God and is obedient to His word, I'm not quite sure I see this as crazy. Do I think there are less aggressive methods that could be just as effective......sure I do. I've always had a little bit of a problem with what appears to be military type training. But as the lyrics go........"Onward Christian Soldiers, marching off to war...." Bottom line....I think this whole thing has every ones feathers ruffled because it sounds like the origin of the Judeo-Christian Taliban.

Is is a bit different?......sure seems to be.

Is it a bad thing?..........Imo, no.

Is it crazy-making?.........Imo, no

Can what you see make your fearful?........of what?

Can what you hear make you fearful?.........again, of what?

I think any extreme view is harmful. Especially when people are not allowed to come to those extreme views by their own free will.

My relationship with God is very important to me and hopefully is reflected in my parenting.

But, in the end, I want my children's acceptance of Christ to be a choice that they make on their own. I will guide them as best as I can, but when the chips are on the table it is in their hands.

Evidently, I didn't see the entire movie. Did I just see the pilot? How long is the movie and where can I find a good link?

absolutely yes

do you?
no - i don't believe speaking in tongues is legitimate. in fact, i think it delludes people into thinking they are closer to god or hearing messages from god that aren't really there.

smurph,

It's okay to spell the Masters name with a capital G. That politically correct stuff can make you guilty by association.

Speaking of tongues is referred to thirty-five times in the bible. The bible is the mind of God on paper. If the bible says it's true, I believe it.

This is the link where I go to church:

sometimes i type everything in lower case. Sometimes I don't.

My view on some things mentioned in the Bible is...well, skeptical. Not everything translates literally into our modern word - as I see it.

I'm certainly not going to try and stop anyone from speaking in tongues. But I will say simply that I don't think speaking in tongues is real. I think it's a perfromance - a very non-humble show of one person supposedly being closer to God than the person who isn't making up fake haunting babbling. This is my opinion.

To most, I'm sure it seems whimsically strange. I can also understand how you would think it's simply an opportunity for some egotist to make a stage for himself. I would think that has happened many, many times. I've also heard it ridiculed with stronger language. If someone doesn't believe it, that's one thing. I really don't think it's a good idea to mock or ridicule something you do not understand.

Personally, I believe speaking in tongues is a gift of God's Holy Spirit.

I have never spoken in tongues.

I don't seriously mock or ridicule. I guess there's a fine line between making fun of and mocking. ....But isn't that just capitualting to the dreaded 'PC' community if I hold back my criticism of something that I think is hogwash?

I guess whether I believe in it or not doesn't matter. If it serves a good purpose for someone then I'm happy for that person. If, ultimately, they are correct and I am wrong then more power to them.

I suppose if I talked to my pastor, he would say, "Hey buddy, people make fun of speaking in tongues all the time. Chill out! Hey, we're Christians! Do you expect everyone you meet to roll out a red carpet and greet you with a marching band? Be glad you can make it from sunrise to sundown without being persecuted a half dozen times."

Sorry, smurph. That post wasn't against you.

As you know, my entire life has been impacted and Jesus and the word of God are extremely important to me. Moreso than ever before and I'm 60.

When I do a self examination, I have a bigger trash heap to sort through than those younger than me.

The relevance and glowing truth of God's word may be directly correlated to the amount of garbage in your life and the years you've been involved as a trash collector.

My garbage pile is enormous.

Sorry for the rant.

I know you probably see me as an atheist, but I am not. I believe in the possibility that Christianity is true. I was a full-fledged Christian during high school and college. I've seen the speaking in tongues thing, and have probably heard every message out there. I harbor no ill-will towards Christianity, but I cannot honestly subscribe my faith to the version of it that I get from churches.

Out of curiosity, when were you saved? I'm very interested to follow the progress of your faith.

I also think that speaking in tongues is, for the most part, bunk. I'm not saying that it never happens, but I don't think the occurrence on every Sunday in particular churches is real.

But that is coming from a Catholic who makes up part of the three evil Cs (i'll ask my buddy for the other two) that many fundamentalists that I have met subscribe to. I was never aware that other Christian faiths had such hatred for Catholicism until a few years ago in my late twenties. I had heard all the jokes, but I take jokes for what they are.
