I was drinking a lot of beer so just laying off that is really going to help.

Bought some dried cherries and cranberries to mix with some nuts for a snack.

Threw out all the xmas candy and cookies and fudge are all gone. Son went back to Ft Gordon so no more pizza and wing nites. Day 3 and so far....

I am a big believer in non-processed foods. I read the label of almost everything I eat. If I see any hydrogenated oil, high fructose corn syrup (BBQ sauces usually have this as the first ingredient---see Sweet Baby Rays---), I usually go to another brand that lists it later in the ingredient list.

Morris, I like you am (was) a big beer drinker---excluively Tequiza--but at 130 cals per pop when I was drinking a case + a week it adds up.

As far as low cal foods "that are tasty" I have found
that Kahsi makes a lot of high quality carbs snacks but they have some fiber in them which is better for you. I love their Go Lean line of products like instant oatmeal---the honey/cinnamon is awesome---like candy with fiber and protein---their cereals are packed with fiber and protein as well. Make sure they are Go Lean style though as they make other products that are much higher in the carb dept and less protein. The Go Lean crunch cereal is better than their regular. Makes a good snack too during the day giving you some good carbs for energy boost.

and their crackers and cookies are great in moderation, when you have that carb attack.

I love clementines and it is peak season for them now. Basically a small orange with no seeds and an easy peel. At 35 calories it goes good with the oatmeal.

If you are gonna eat a lot of salads it is imperative you find a dressing you like. I love Kens honey mustard and now have swithced to the lite version to save on the fat cals. Very tasty.

As far as breads go I always look for low carb stuff. I found these pockets and lavash (roll-ups) that are made of oat bran and flaxseed and they taste awesome. I have them with turkey or tuna and veges and a few hot pepper rings. For a snack I toast them and slather on all natural peanut butter--no salt added mmmmm. You can put a little pizza sauce and some cheese on them and they make great healthy individual pizzas. Or some olive oil and garlic mmmm are you getting hungry yet????
I get them in the deli section of Hannafords, Shaws or Stop and Shop. If you are gonna eat bread I highly suggest these treats.

Joseph's Flax, Oat Bran & Whole Wheat Flour Pita Bread:
NO Trans Fats
NO Cholesterol
High Protein
Reduced Carb

1 Pita =
Calories: 60
Total Fat: 2 g
Sodium: 300mg
Total Carbs: 8g
Dietary Fiber: 4g
Protein: 6g

Their lavash bread is just as tasty and you can wrap up a nice steak and cheese in them just stay away from the ketchup and mayo--how I normally eat them--A1 steak sauce is better for you believe it or not.

Nuts---all kinds---pistachios, cashews, walnuts, macadamias, almonds (my least favorite), sunflower seeds etc...all good for you in moderation. Don't eat a can of them just rifle down a handful or two and some water for a satisfying quick snack. Or mix them all together in a jar or zip lock baggie.

String cheese also low carb and easy to rifle down. 1 or 2 depending on hunger

I usually drink 1-2 diet sodas a day but i'm steering away from them this time. Love the Vault Zero though.

Fudgecicle makes low cal fudgecicle---about 45 cals--and a good chocolate taste when you get that urge.

No sugar added jello puddings are 25 cals /serving

I am making an honest effort not to eat past 7:30 this time as well. If I am hungry I will throw some protein powder in with a little milk and water and a few ice cubes. Hasn't happened yet though.

good luck guys---we should have a Biggest Loser Madjacks:shrug:

Really backed off my general workout strategy the past few months, especially the cardio, and the combination of lifting heavy/eating has me weighing in at 242 :scared with 15% bf, by far heaviest I've ever been. I knew I was heavier than normal but suprised at the number just because my clothes still fit normal.

Goal is to lean out and hit 210/10% by May.

Here's my strategy, has worked for me before so I'm going to give it a shot again.

1. eat every 2-3 hours
2. eat lean protein with each meal (40 grams per meal)
3. eat veggies and/or fruit with each meal (exception is pre/during workout)
4. supplement with healthy fats like fish oil, flax oil and olive oil and balance your fat intake btwn saturates, monos and polys
5. keep carbs to during and a few hours post workout (no non-veggie/non-fruit carbs on off day)
6. drink mostly non-calorie drinks (exception is during/post workout)
7. stick to whole foods; no processed foods
8. follow the above for 90% of your meals and allow 10% of your meals to be cheat meals? so if you are eating 40 meals per week, you may have 4 cheat meals per week

I have found that I'm pretty carb sensitive so keeping the heavy carbs to pre/post workout is very effective, and loading up on vegtables is key for me as well.

Everything that has been said so far is dread on, especialy the food journal and Jack's idea with the sugar free jello (that stuff fills me up pretty well before bed and helps with the sweet tooth cravings.)

I know that this will probably open myself up to some funny comments but has anyone ever tried a colon flush? I know a few people that sware by them (do it about every 2 years and see a benefit in how they feel). Basically cleans out any backed up toxins that might be in there. Ordered the ingredients today for a 30 day cleanse and will give it a shot to see what it's like.

One thing I forgot to add: don't make the mistake of treating veggies and fruits as the same type of carb, I would suggest a 3 to 1 or even 4 to 1 ratio of veggies to fruits during the day as well. Less sugar and more nutritional value in the veggies obviously.

had a little fallback last night...was starving about 9pm and fixed up some steak and chicken quesadillias (sp) should have only eaten one but had 1.5 they were so good. It could have been worse. A week ago I would have been at Wendy's for a Baconator and a couple spicy chicken sandwiches with fries (like I ate after a Christmas party after pigging out all day that day---my wife says I should be a competitive eater).

Did make a trip to the garage, drank 2 beers and had a pill, so my 3 day streak starts over today. It will be much easier for me once the Super Bowl is over and all these bowl games are done.

But....

woke up today and rode the bike for an hour and almost made 22 miles...

down to 221.5 (start 230)

off to Beantown for an audition for my daughter for a TV show...have a great day everyone!!!!!

First weekend almost over an not a single binge yet. Last night I wanted wings and a huge cheeseburger but made it through the night with a bowl of stir fry (flavorless---wife made it).

Rode another hour this morning broke the 22mile barrier by .5 miles...after 6 minutes I was winded as the ol lady had to get her 10 seconds of love (Motley reference, but not far off from the truth) this morning...didn't think I would make it, but watched Breakin Vegas Jim Mcmanus story and before I knew it I was at 50 mins.

Weighed in at 220 (219.5 the first time)...that's 10 lbs in 4 days. No starving myself. The food is not as tasty, but I can handle it. Gonna treat myself to some Buffalo wings today I think. I'm worth it. Just as long as i don't throw in a bunch of ice cream and brewskis i should be fine...

hope your all doing just as well....

LMM, thanks for the kudos...much appreciated

keep the faith boyz....

Day 5 for me. Had baked fish on Fri nite and got sicker than hell during the nite. Wife too. If that was food poisoning I never want it again. Never felt that bad ever.
Needless to say all I had yesterday was a cup of yogurt and some chicked noodle soup for dinner. That's all my stomach could take.
Haven't weighed in yet but I feel good about this. Day 5, no beer, no sweets! Lots of water though.

day 5 here too. a little disappointed i only dropped 3 pounds as they usually come off quicker the first week. maybe the non-smoking has something to do with it

people usually gain weight when they quit smoking but i think it's because they eat MORE, i'm eating less.

the hardest part of my non-smoking day is behind me for today. i really struggle in the late mornings while drinking coffee. it gets easier and less urges as the day gets later.

good job, guys. keep up the good work.

First of all, great job so far on the non-smoking deal Jack, I wish I could say the same. I don't smoke the butts but still lit up both Saturday and Sunday. Also took a pill on both days and had 3 beers over the entire weekend. So you are doing much better than me when it comes to the extra curriculars. I just don't have the urgency to quit but the closer I get to my drug testing days I know I will be able to stop.

On the weight loss issue, I weighed in at 220 on Sunday (-10 lbs), but had half a humungous cheeseburger with bacon and fries and about 8 buffalo wings with blue cheese for my cheat meal for the week and it took it's toll. I weighed in at 223.5 yesterday morning.

Got up early to break a sweat on the bike this morning though and got to 222 this morning. The weekdays are no problem for me, it's the weekends where I let loose. Gonna do a circuit tonight of bike and light weights.

My friend gave me a recipe for chicken meatballs with feta and spinach. Since I like restricitn carbs, especially at night, when I am trying to lose weight they are perfect for dinner with a salad.

1 pkg of ground chicken (1lb)
1 pack frozen spinach thawed, drained
small chunk of feta

mix all together, shape into balls and cook at 400 for about 15-18 mins. Makes 12 meatballs.

pretty good if you like that sort of thing, I use a little A1 steak sauce or some Wango Tango hot sauce on them or eat them plain. Nice quick lunch or snack or dinner....

Keep up the great work guyz...Morris I hope your feeling better!!

Day 7 for me with NO beer or sweets. I don't have an urge yet. Weigh in tomorrow. I don't weigh myself every day because of the flucuations.

Food today was Yogurt for breakfast, a hard boiled egg and some mixed nuts during the day. Dinner is Pork tenderloin, broccoli and rice.

Lots of water.

Congrats guys on making it this far!

Haven't changed my diet much except eating more often. I drink a protein shake (w/ water) 3 times a day between my 3 meals.

My main thing is moving more. I need to lose the fat and maintain as much muscle as I can. I do not want to get in that pendulum weight loss cycle where I continually increase my fat percentage. I think the original 30 pound goal is probably not correct for me at this time. I'll do 20, get to 185, and re-evaluate.

Racquetball twice a week and the gym is my activity plan at this point. Also, my son starts his first soccer league soon and I am helping coach. It won't be a lot of exercise, per se, but it will be better for me than sitting on my fat ass a couple of times per week.

Hummus is a great snack on carrots.

And Cherry Coke Zero is the bomb!!! Not exactly healthy but it is 0 calories and MUCH better than the normal diet drinks.

Does anyone else despise the new Diet Dr. Pepper commercials? They are freaking terrible!

Blackman -- you can probably answer this.

A friend of mine (men's health cover material) has a theory to knock out a 100 calorie protein shake right before going to bed to keep your metabolism firing all night.

What's your thoughts on that?
