Leach suspended after player complaintComment

ESPN.com

Texas Tech has suspended coach Mike Leach from all duties, including coaching the Valero Alamo Bowl, after receiving a complaint from a player and his parents.

"At Texas Tech, all such complaints are considered as serious matters, and as a result, an investigation of the incident is underway," the school said in a release. "The investigation into this matter will continue in a thorough and fair manner."

Defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill has been named interim head coach and will coach the team against Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl.

The school received a complaint from the unnamed player and his parents regarding his treatment by Leach after an undisclosed injury.

The school declined further comment because it was considered a personnel matter

Texas Tech suspends coach Mike Leach

By BETSY BLANEY, Associated Press Writer 4 hours, 49 minutes ago

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP)?Texas Tech is preparing for the Alamo Bowl without its quirky coach.
University officials on Monday suspended Mike Leach while the school investigates complaints from receiver Adam James and his family about how the player was treated after a concussion in practice earlier this month.

James is the son of former NFL player Craig James, now an analyst for ESPN.
Defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill will be the interim coach when the Red Raiders play Michigan State in San Antonio on Jan. 2.

McNeill, who will remain in charge of the team until the investigation is complete, declined to answer questions about the complaints after Monday night?s practice in San Antonio. Players were not made available to the media.

?Mike?s my friend. We?ve been friends for a long time, and I don?t think right now is the right time to go into that,? said McNeill, who Leach brought to Texas Tech in 2000.
He said Leach arrived with the team in San Antonio and that Adam James also was with the team, but not practicing. School officials declined to identify the player, but James? family released a statement to The Associated Press saying it was him.

A person with direct knowledge of the complaints told the AP that James, while unable to practice with a concussion, twice was forced to stand in a small, dark place for hours while the team practiced. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the complaint and the ongoing investigation.

James was hurt Dec. 16 and the next day was diagnosed with a concussion, the person said.
According to the person, James was sequestered at two consecutive practices:
? On Dec. 17, James said Leach told trainers to put him in ?the darkest place you can find.? James was sent to an equipment shed near the practice field, where a member of the athletic staff checked on James to make sure he did not lean against anything or sit on the floor. James said Leach told him that if he came out he would be kicked off the team.

? When the team returned to practice two days later, on Dec. 19, James said Leach told trainers to ?find the tightest, darkest place? for the player. James, in his street clothes, was put in an electrical closet inside the football stadium for hours, again monitored by a member of the athletic staff.

The James family contacted the university after the second practice, the person said.
Leach?s attorney, Ted Liggett, disputed the account.

Adam James ?claimed to have been hurt,? was examined and diagnosed with a ?mild concussion,? Liggett told the AP. ?I believe that (Adam James) was a disgruntled student athlete that like many were not happy with their playing time.?

Liggett told ESPN.com that James ?was placed in an equipment room as it was much cooler and darker? than the practice field. The second time, Liggett told ESPN.com, James was placed in a ?press room with air conditioning and a stationary bike he could use.?

McNeill said he was told Monday afternoon that he was taking over for Leach, then told the players shortly afterward.

?They were probably a little shocked, but at the same time, they did a good job of coming on the field and doing what I asked them to do. I was proud of that,? McNeill said.

Craig James had been scheduled to announce the Alamo Bowl. ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said that was no longer the case.
The James family issued a statement Monday saying their ?son had been subjected to actions and treatment not consistent with common sense rules for safety and health.?
?Over the past year, there has been a greatly enhanced recognition of the dangers of concussions and the potential for long term physical damage to players. At virtually every level of football coaching, cases where children and young men have sustained concussions have generated serious discussion of the importance of correct treatment and diagnosis.?
There?s been internal strife this season with the Red Raiders (8-4).

Leach chastised players after a loss to Texas A&M in October for listening to ?their fat little girlfriends? and thinking the Aggies were a pushover. After the Red Raiders? loss at then-No. 12 Houston in September, Leach suspended starting offensive lineman Brandon Carter indefinitely for violating team rules.
That week, Leach also banned his players from having Twitter pages after linebacker Marlon Williams posted a tweet that asked why he was still in a meeting room when ?the head coach can?t even be on time.?

Leach led Texas Tech to the best season in program history last year, going 11-2. He and the university were at odds for months over a contract extension. In February, Leach and the school agreed to a five-year, $12.7 million deal that could keep him there through 2013.

AP College Football Writer Ralph D. Russo in New York and Associated Press Writer Paul J. Weber in San Antonio contributed to this report.

pussification of america

pussification of america

The reports I can piece together through various player twitter accounts is this:

on 12-16 james was hurt in practice with a mild concussion

next day showed up for practice/ since he could have no contact Leach made him walk the track as the rest practiced

next day James shows up with sunglasses on to walk track// Leach asks him why he has sunglasses on and James tells him it helps him not get headaches/ so Leach tells him I can help you out there and sends him to room with minimal light(dark room)

this is all about power struggle-- James plans on transferring to smu because he isn't getting the playing time his DADDY thinks he needs

Not defending Leach at all, but let's all let everything come out before me make a judgment. It amazes me, as a former coach, that everyone seems to take the side of the 18-21 year old kid before we hear from the coach who has been dealing with student-athletes for many years!!

If it is true that he stuck him in rooms with total darkness and told staff to not let him sit, then yes, he should be punished severely if not fired. However, if the kid is not telling the truth,(even though it won't happen!) he should be issued an apology and move on.

And Craig James should just STFU:director:

Leach refused to apologize

Texas Tech completed an initial investigation before suspending Mike Leach. The Avalanche-Journal learned during that investigation Leach did not dispute the facts, but did not believe he had done anything wrong. Leach also told officials Adam James was a slacker and his father, Craig James, was always calling and acting like a Little League dad. Leach had until Monday to write an apology and when he did not, the university officials felt they had to take action. Leach has been suspended indefinitely, with pay, from his role as head coach.

I love it!! I love that Leach is telling everyone that it is his team and if you celebrity sports parents don't like his coaching style - go the fawk home!!

Until I see and hear more evidence, I don't think he should apologize. I don't see a great deal of evidence that he did anything wrong.

Good lord, I coached college tennis and did worse things to players than this:mj07:

I am by no means a TT fan,but I will stand up for Leech here.
It is no secret the TT administration is ready for Leech to be gone as everyone says he is a pain in the ass, but this is comical.
It sure sounds like Adam James is coming off more as a little bitch than Leech is a dick.
All players are saying James was a whining prima donna who needed some discipline.
None of the players are coming out backing James and none are saying negative things about Leech.
It is well known that James wants out because he feels he is not being used and is better than others. Reports are he would not put in the work and thought he should be handed the spot because of his last name.
Tech needs to reinstate Leech as James has nobody backing him and Leech has fomer and current players on his side.
It is Tech who should apologize to Leech.
Putting a guy in a air conditioned room with no loghts is not punishment but just sending a message to stop acting like a baby.
What would have been wrong is forcing him to run laps coming off a concussion.
I played basketball in school in the 80's and you could not believe some things the HS coaches would do in practices.
These kids today.

Completely agree. I can't believe Tech suspended him because he wouldn't apologize. What a dumb move on their part. If they didn't want Leach around, they shouldn't have done the extension with him. Trying to use this as a way to get rid of Leach is ridiculous and they are going to end up with egg on their face. If they do remove Leach, what type of coach are they going to get? Any quality replacements will look at the administration's actions toward Leach and say no thank you.

Craig James was the reason SMU got the death penalty in the mid-80's, now his prima donna son gets Mike Leach fired. I don't know the whole story, but James's son is a big lazy ass pussy. No way Leach did what he is accused of doing. Leach is quirky and has never got along with the AD. I think he is being railroaded.

:sadwave: more to the story than we know

Also how does Craig James get to broadcast this game in the first case, and how does espn keep him on the game after this shit comes out.

And its not a suprise to see Espn just covering one side of the story.

I can't believe Gerald Meyers fired him.

This story is unreal unless more leaks.

They really wanted him out.

Looks like Sonny Dykes will get the job.

Wow, can't believe they pulled the trigger. They are going to have a big lawsuit on their hands. There is evidence that he wouldn't have been suspended if he issued an "apology". How do they think they can claim they fired for cause now?

Also I still believe my earlier statement that they will struggle to get a quality replacement. Who is going to want to go there when they see how Leach was railroaded?
