Super Bowl 50 an 51

Super Bowl 50 an 51

The NFL rewarded the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday with hosting rights for the 2016 championship game, slotting the 50th Super Bowl in the 49ers' high-tech Santa Clara stadium scheduled to open next year.

The league also voted at its spring meetings to give the 2017 game to Houston.

Former NFL quarterback Joe Theismann told Fox Sports Florida over the weekend that Miami Heat star LeBron James is talented enough to be a quarterback in the NFL.

"I wouldn't count him out," Theismann said. "He's the most tremendous physical specimen in all of sports. I think he's certainly talented enough. He's intelligent."

Theismann even offered to be the reigning NBA MVP's agent.

"I would love to work him out and also serve as his agent," Theismann said. "I'll go wherever he wants this summer. He could play another four years in the NBA before seriously trying the NFL. There are not a lot of 38- or 39-year-old basketball players, but there are 38- and 39-year-old quarterbacks, so there's time for him."

James did not disagree with Theismann's assessment.

"I have the ability," James said. "I can see and read plays. I study a lot, so I know defenses and things of that nature. So I would have been pretty good if I had decided to go for it."

James played quarterback as a freshman at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary before switching to wide receiver his sophomore and junior seasons.

Theismann said James would have a lot to learn about playing quarterback but he would not mind teaching him.

"The first thing I'd do is teach him the snap," Theismann said. "Then I'd take him through drop backs, quick hitches, throwing the deep ball. Wouldn't that be a great piece of footage to see, LeBron throwing the football?"

Goodbye cold, grungy Candlestick Park. Hello high tech, shiny new Levi's Stadium.

Fifty-four years after $32 million Candlestick Park opened, the 49ers are building a new, $1.2 billion showcase of a stadium which is almost twice as big, wired to the hilt, and opening its doors just in time to host Super Bowl 50 in the heart of the Silicon Valley.

And about those bathroom lines? Here, Levi's Stadium offers a definite upgrade: 1,135 toilets, up from Candlestick's 885

:0003

Arriving just five years after Cowboys Stadium, Jerry Jones' $1 billion showcase for his club, the 49ers are aiming to redefine state of the art, as team officials made clear on a recent tour.

''If you're a fan and you go to Candlestick, then you will really appreciate this new stadium,'' said project executive Jack Hill, standing on the building's 200-foot-high roof, gazing out at the south tip of the San Francisco Bay. ''It's going to be the crowning glory of the NFL.''

The airy, open stadium had an intimate feel; with the largest lower bowl in the league, the 68,500 fans are close to the action. And that closeness is mutual. When players burst through the blowing smoke and blasting music on game day, they'll be able to make eye contact with every seat, even the corner nosebleeds who are dwarfed beneath some of the largest high definition jumbotrons in the league.

''This stadium is tremendous for the team. It helps strengthen the brand, because the one negative thing about the 49ers has always been Candlestick Park,'' said University of Southern California professor Jeff Fellenzer, who teaches sports, business and media.

The steep construction bills are being paid by $800 million in seat and luxury box sales, along with a 20-year, $220 million naming rights agreement with Levi Strauss and Co. announced May 8, clinching a partnership with the company that added copper rivets to denim pants 150 years ago to create the first blue jeans for California's rugged gold miners, the so-called 49ers. A few weeks later, the NFL chose the stadium for the 2016 Super Bowl.

While they're in the black now, funding for the stadium has come with its share of rancor.

''Our city has long deferred more important projects,'' wrote resident Bill Bailey on the anti-stadium organization's Santa Clara Plays Fair website. Bailey heads the coalition of Santa Clara residents concerned that accommodating the 49ers draws funds away from critical needs like public libraries. ''We believe that Santa Clara should not tax its citizens, increase its debt, or allocate land or any other valuable assets to build a stadium.''

The 49ers and the city of Santa Clara initially partnered to build the stadium, with voters approving a $30 million public investment of redevelopment funds. Those funds were unexpectedly yanked by county officials last summer, after Gov. Jerry Brown eliminated all redevelopment agencies in the state.

The 49ers sued after county officials said the $30 million needed to go to public schools and other agencies, and a court-approved deal was struck: the public agencies received half of the money they wanted, and the 49ers agreed to collect the $30 million over a longer period.

Team officials still are happier with their new home than the old one.

Notoriously blustery, with fog and wind blowing off the adjacent bay, Candlestick Park, or ''The 'Stick,'' took another hit in 2011 when a pair of blackouts left fans in the dark for more than 20 minutes. It's value is nil: weeks after the last 49ers game next season, the owners plan to blow it up.

EJ Narcise, a principal at Team Services, LLC, a naming rights sports marketing sales and consulting firm in Rockville, Md., said the new stadium should bring new revenue to a team that is been in the bottom third of the NFL in that category.

''Look, they're a great team, but they have missed the revenues generated from the luxury seats, the premiums suites, the concession upgrades and the entertainment,'' he said.

The 49ers, meanwhile, are trying to make their building the most environmentally friendly stadium in the league. Solar panels will gather enough power so that even on Super Bowl Sunday they won't need to pull electricity from the grid. The grass field and toilets use recycled water, the turf is geothermic, a bicycle valet and racks will welcome cyclists who can pedal in bike paths from miles around, even from the airport.

Today, the 50-yard line is loaded with shipping containers, trucks and port-a-potties to support the 1,100 construction workers buzzing around the site. But the grass is already growing on a turf farm about 90 minutes away, and should be rolled out next March.

A few blocks from the stadium, at the 49ers showcase and sales office, fans on Friday took a virtual stadium walk through at a nine-foot digital touch wall, and sat in a mock-up suite before pulling out their credit cards one after another to buy the rights to eventually buy tickets. Before they did, they had a chance to see a 3-D version of what their view of the stadium would be.

''We're pretty excited. This stadium looks amazing, and it's so close to our home,'' said Jojo Daquigan, a postal worker in San Jose, who with his wife Cristina, a nurse, had just paid $5,000 in one-time fees for midlevel corner seats.

In keeping with its Silicon Valley base of support, the 49ers' assumption is that fans will be carrying smartphones, so the place will be entirely cash free and ticketless. Software engineers are already building apps for cellphones that will allow fans to order food, watch instant replays, listen to play by play and check bathroom lines from their seats.

I agree with SF.. 1 and done!!

The Steelers boast the oldest starting defense in the NFL, but they also have three new starters on that side of the ball entering the 2013 season.

Cortez Allen, in his third season, takes over at cornerback for departed Keenan Allen, a fourth-year pro who signed with the New Orleans Saints after just one season as a starter in Pittsburgh.

Jason Worilds, in his fourth season, replaces James Harrison at right outside linebacker after the Steelers cut their one-time NFL defensive player of the year. Harrison, who refused to take the pay cut the Steelers offered, landed with the Bengals.

And Steve McLendon, in his fourth season, moves into Casey Hampton's old spot at nose tackle, a job Hampton held down for 12 years.

That trio is young, but seasoned in Dick LeBeau's defense, which was No. 1 in the NFL in each of the past two seasons in fewest yards allowed.

"We'd like to be No. 1 in every category," said Allen. "That should be every defense's goal."

The defense that was described as "old" and "slow" by the NFL Network's Warren Sapp -- who added "it's over" -- two years ago, hasn't done badly. However, it no longer creates turnovers the way it once did. The Steelers managed only 11 interceptions in 2011, and 10 last season. After ranking second in the league with a plus-17 turnover differential during their last Super Bowl season in 2010, they slipped to 28th with a minus-13 in 2011 and 24th with a minus-10 in 2012.

They're doing drills this spring on defense to try to change those numbers.

"We're working on it every day, doing more ball drills, more emphasis on attacking the ball so we can do better in that category," Allen said.

Of course it did not help that some of their biggest playmakers missed time in 2012 because of injuries. Troy Polamalu missed nine games. Harrison missed the first three and it took him about half the season before he returned to form from knee surgery. LaMarr Woodley missed three games and was hampered by hamstring and ankle injuries.

Green Bay Slackers

Green Bay Slackers

Mark Murphy has made it clear the Green Bay Packers would like to have a grand and public reconciliation with Brett Favre. Sooner rather than later.

It looks like that day could be coming soon. Wounds have healed and fences are being mended for one of the game?s all-time best. This time, it was Favre making it very clear when he appeared on WGR 550-AM in Buffalo in support of a charity for former Bills quarterback Jim Kelly.

?I was at fault,? Favre said of the way his divorce with the Packers went back in 2008 during his interview with Joe Buscaglia. You can listen to the entire interview here.

According to Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin, Favre said he?s been in consistent contact with Murphy, the team?s president, and indicated his relationship with Aaron Rodgers has improved as well. By publicly saying what he did, it?s evident he is also motivated to be back in the Packers family.

?As time does, it heals a lot of things. I know for me as I've gotten further and further removed from the game, I think about the statistics and things of that nature, which I don't know of any player where that didn't matter some,? Favre said. ?It matters a whole lot less now. So the things that transpired that led to us 'breaking up' if you will, to me, are over and done with.

?And so, when will that happen? I don't think either side is trying to push the issue. I think Mark Murphy ? and Mark came in really in the last few weeks of my career in Green Bay -- he kind of came into a hornets? nest if you will. He's been extremely great in trying to make this work. And in our discussions, it?s been, ?It will happen.? I think both sides are genuine. I know they are. And that's the way it has to come across because that's the way it should be. We don't want to go out there waving to the crowd with our backs to each other. And I don't think that's going to happen.

?Aaron has said some very nice things. And he and I have a good relationship. I had a chance to present an award with him at the Super Bowl and that was for real. It wasn't for show. And so I think everything will be fine.?

Favre also took some blame for the way things shook out at the end before he was traded to the New York Jets.

?It is what it is. It's over and done with. I was at fault,? he said. ?I feel that both sides had a part in it. If you could go back, would I or they have done things differently? I'm sure both sides would. But you can't. And I think, I don't know for certain, but I think the situation with Peyton (Manning) and the Colts almost looked like our situation. But then, maybe they thought twice about it and maybe they learned from our situation and they handled it correctly.

?So I hate it, that it happened that way. And I tried to go on and play my best football in spite of those things. And I had a great year my first year in Minnesota and up until my bicep was torn in New York, I really felt we were having a great year. So I look back and have fond memories of all those years.

?In 20 years of football, really I don't hold any regrets. I know I gave it my all. Had 16 great, wonderful years in Green Bay. Had a lot of success, played with a lot of great teammates, was part of some teams that had some great coaches who have all branched out, (Mike) McCarthy being one of those.

"I think things will be fine in due time.?

Denver Bombcos

Denver Bombcos

To borrow from Jimmy Buffett: "Changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes" (and, in this case, farewell to platitudes)

Welker, the first player in league history with five 100-catch seasons

Brady was angered by the Patriots' decision to move on without his favorite target and close friend, especially given that the quarterback had just restructured his contract in an effort to give the organization more spending flexibility.

Come autumn, when Welker attempts to play down his Nov. 24 return to Gillette Stadium for what should be a Manning vs. Brady Sunday night classic, don't believe him. At all.

I'll take Bombco's over 11.5 wins!

Bolts

Bolts

The Indianapolis Bolts have agreed to terms with running back Ahmad Bradshaw.

The two-time Super Bowl winning running back rushed for over 1,000 yards twice during his six-year stint with the New York Tyrants. In 84 career games (33 starts) with the Giants, Bradshaw carried the ball 921 times for 4,232 yards and 32 touchdowns. He added 132 receptions for 1,087 yards and three scores.

In 2012, Bradshaw ran for 1,015 yards and six touchdowns.

The signing of Bradshaw gives the Bolts more depth at the running back position.

The Denver Bombcos have released running back Willis McGahee.

The 31-year-old veteran spent two seasons in Denver. He ran for 1,199 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games during the 2011 campaign, earning his second Pro Bowl nod, then last year rushed for 731 yards with four scores in 10 games.

"It's never easy to part ways with a veteran player who made so many positive contributions to our team and community," said Broncos vice president of football operations John Elway in a statement Thursday. "I appreciate all of the competitiveness, toughness and leadership Willis brought to the Bombcos. He was an integral part of our team's turnaround during the past two seasons, and I wish him the best as he continues his NFL career."

The Bombcos may have deemed McGahee expendable after the team also announced Thursday the signing of Montee Ball out of Wisconsin. Ball, a second-round selection the 2013 draft, racked up 5,140 rushing yards and 77 touchdowns -- including six receiving touchdowns -- en route to becoming the NCAA's all-time leader in total touchdowns with 83 over his four-year career in Madison.

They Bombcos also have a wealth of depth in the backfield with Knowshon Moreno, C.J. Anderson, Lance Ball, Jacob Hester, Ronnie Hillman and Jeremiah Johnson on the roster.

McGahee joined Denver as a free agent in July 2011 after playing four years with Baltimore and four seasons in Buffalo. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard barrier with both teams as well, and joined Ricky Watters as the only players in league history to reach that plateau with three different teams.

In 130 career games, McGahee has run for 8,097 yards with 63 touchdowns. He also has 202 catches for 1,319 yards and five scores. His 33 career 100-yard rushing games are tied for second-most among active players.

Denver also signed cornerback Kayvon Webster from the University of South Florida after selecting him with the 90th overall pick in April's draft.

DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas County district attorney says he's not surprised that Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent failed two drug tests while out on bond facing an intoxication manslaughter charge.

Brent was charged after a December car crash that killed practice squad player Jerry Brown. Court records show his bond was revoked after he tested positive twice for marijuana.

District Attorney Craig Watkins told KRLD-FM last week that it's clear to him that Brent is struggling with addiction. Watkins says that Brent ''still uses alcohol and illicit drugs,'' and he wants him jailed for the crash.

Those comments drew protests from Brent's attorney, George Milner, who on Tuesday called them inappropriate. Milner says he'll ask a judge to force Watkins to comply with ethics rules

It's only Money........

It's only Money........

COMMENTARY| When the Baltimore Ravens announced the numbers of Joe Flacco's new contract at the beginning of the offseason, the response was swift and critical. Fans and analysts alike screamed that the Ravens would be crippled by Flacco's massive contract, unable to re-sign their own players or sign even lower-tier free agents. Regardless of the cap friendly measures in place, the $20 million per year deal seemed a symptom of a quarterback market that had gone out of control.

It has, but don't blame the Ravens. Having taken care of Flacco quickly, before free agency opened, the Ravens actually got a discount when compared to the latest deals.

Not long after Flacco signed his deal, Aaron Rodgers was extended to a deal that surpassed even Flacco's: a five-year, $110 million deal that averages out to $22 million a year. That deal made Rodgers the most expensive player in the NFL, though you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who thinks that he is undeserving.

Both of these deals were a little controversial, if only for their sheer size. The deals have already started to go crazy, and they will only get worse.

We've already gone down this road when the Dallas Cowboys re-upped Tony Romo to his own mega-deal. Though less total money than Flacco's contract, Romo's deal is less cap friendly and guarantees even more money.

Next was Matthew Stafford, who just agreed to a massive extension of his own. Though significantly less than Rodgers' and Flacco's deals, Stafford's extension is still around $17 million per year, not including the remaining years that were on his contract. This for a quarterback who has never won a playoff game.

Worse than the massive total salary is the guaranteed money that Stafford's deal brings. His $43 million guaranteed are significantly more per year than Flacco's $52 million, and for a much riskier player. Stafford has been inconsistent and injury-prone, so regardless of his ceiling, the guaranteed money here is absurd.

It's also common knowledge that Matt Ryan will be getting a new contract this offseason. The parameters of the deal are still being worked out, but waiting has boosted Ryan's leverage and set a precedent for the kind of mega-deal he's looking for. When Ryan signs on the dotted line, he will probably become the highest paid player in the NFL.

Though Ryan isn't worthy of that status, the market has been set. He is a true franchise quarterback, and if the Falcons aren't willing to pay him, another team would.

To recap, since Flacco signed his much maligned deal, Tony Romo has signed for more guaranteed money, Aaron Rodgers has become the highest paid player in the NFL, Matthew Stafford has signed for more guaranteed money per year and Matt Ryan is getting ready to sign a deal that should trump them all.

Flacco's was a controversial deal at the time, and the process was contentious. Yet, the Ravens came out on top again, signing a deal that keeps Flacco's cap number very low for three years, when they will re-negotiate.

The Ravens had to re-sign Flacco, and for the most part, the other quarterbacks mentioned were crucial to their teams as well. Give the Ravens credit, though, for dictating the market rather than letting the market dictate their negotiations. In doing so, they were able to re-sign their franchise quarterback to a deal that now looks pretty smart.

IMO

Allow me to attempt to be philosophical for a moment before I dive into the real issue at hand.

We as human beings have this notion that we like to know everything. Especially when it comes to sports, if we have some sort of platform to voice our opinions - whether it be writing articles like this or comment boards on all websites - we want to be right.

As people, we like to think we know the answers to all of life's questions. We try to become the next great philosophical mind, when all we are, are just voices from the outside, using our predictions.

Yet at times, there are questions that just can't be answered, and this goes one of two ways: Either the arrogance behind the glass window is preventing us from the true answer by nature, or people are just not thinking clearly and the ones from the outside looking in are left dumbfounded by force.

In the case of the situation between Josh Brent and the Dallas Cowboys, the word 'dumbfounded' is nowhere near strong enough to fully describe the true nature of what's going on.

I don't think there's anything in this world to describe this mess of a situation.

By now, the tragic death of Jerry Brown is well known and no further details, other than the facts that Brent was the driver and he was drunk, need to be enhanced. Brent was charged with intoxication manslaughter, and the trial for that will begin in September.

Now, thinking more on a psychological level, the thought process that should come into play here is that, if you're in trouble with the law already, don't you think it'd be wise to stay away from trouble?

No one sent that message to Brent. He was just released from Dallas County Jail on Sunday, spending just less than two weeks there because he tested positive for marijuana, which violated the terms of his $100,000 bond for said intoxication manslaughter charge.

Keep in mind: His trial is in September. We're about two months away from that. And as we approach training camp beginning on July 21, there's still one glaring issue that can't go unnoticed.

Josh Brent is still on the Dallas Cowboys' roster.

What?

The better question actually, should be, 'Why?' Or maybe, 'How?'

Even some of life's toughest questions don't need to be longer than a few letters. In this situation, this theory is validated.

The difference between this situation and what Aaron Hernandez is facing right now are different by nature, yet both involved the death of another person, in which they were both believed to be involved in said death. The New England Patriots took the right approach in releasing Hernandez just moments after he was arrested.

What are the Cowboys trying to prove here with handling Brent?

This isn't the first time that the franchise has been questioned in what they've done with Brent. Just a week after the Jerry Brown incident, Brent was back on the sidelines for the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Things would've smoothed over if the men in charge of the Dallas organization told Brent to stay home, regardless of some of his teammates wanting him there. That was not the time to do that.

And with this recent news coming out of his marijuana charge and, still, the Cowboys have not done anything in regards to his stance on the roster, this says more about the state of the franchise more than the state of the player.

This franchise is accustomed to having troublemakers in the past. And in the past, they've dealt with it, from Pacman Jones all the way down to Tank Johnson. Why is this situation any different, and what are Jerry and Stephen Jones waiting for? It's time to let him go before the drams spills into training camp. Before we know it, it'll be preseason, and then it'll be the regular season.

If he's still on the roster by the time the Cowboys kick off against the New York Giants on Sept. 8, there's a problem brewing and we can't see it. But we do know it needs to be fixed. This isn't the time to have legal drama over your team. The Patriots are heading into training camp with one less tight end, but at least they know the mind is clear.

Right now, if Brent is in a uniform come training camp, what will we be talking about more? The fact that the Cowboys need to get back to the playoffs in 2013, or that Brent is still on the roster?

Again, more of life's burning questions. At least we know the answer to this one.

It's time to let him go. Now. :0003

Embarrassing NFL offseason arrests aren't just limited to players.

The Denver Broncos' front office is having quite the week. On Monday, news broke that Broncos director of player personnel Matt Russell was charged with DUI. Then on Tuesday, the Associated Press uncovered a June 11 incident involving another member of the front office being arrested for drunk driving.

Broncos director of pro personnel Tom Heckert was arrested in Parker, Colo. the night of June 11 and charged with driving under the influence and careless driving, the AP reported.

The team put out a strong statement on the "disturbing pattern" of behavior.

WASHINGTON ? A former NFL player is suing the Washington Redskins and former assistant coach Gregg Williams, saying a career-ending knee injury is the result of a bounty program where Redskins coaches encouraged players to intentionally injure opponents.

Barrett Green, a linebacker who played for the Detroit Lions and the New York Giants between 2000 and 2005, says a career-ending knee injury during a game on Dec. 5, 2004 was the result of a bounty program and a "unusual, outrageous, and an obvious cheap shot."

Judging by his obituary, Scott E. Entsminger would happily spend eternity cheering on the Cleveland Browns. But before he passed away July 4, the lifelong fan couldn't resist one shot at the team that failed to live up to his expectations.

In his obituary, published Sunday in the Columbus Dispatch, the 55-year-old hilariously requested "six Cleveland Browns pall bearers so the Browns can let him down one last time."

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. (AP) -- Police in suburban Atlanta say a man who identified himself as the son of NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor has been arrested on rape charges.

Powder Springs police said Monday that 31-year-old Lawrence Taylor Jr. is accused of having sex with two underage girls. Police say one girl accused Taylor of sexually assaulting her July 6, and that another accused him of having consensual sex with her last year.

The elder Taylor, 54, was a linebacker for the New York Giants between 1981 and 1993 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999. Taylor was sentenced last year to six years of probation after pleading guilty to charges stemming from sex with an underage prostitute.

Taylor, Jr., is being held without bond on statutory rape, aggravated child molestation and aggravated sodomy charges. It's unclear if he has an attorney
