FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was arrested and accused of drunk driving Thursday in Nebraska while on probation for assaulting a police officer, the second New England player to get in serious legal trouble this summer.

Dennard's early-morning arrest in Lincoln, Neb., where he was a college star for the Cornhuskers, came 15 days after Aaron Hernandez was charged with murder and three days after Patriots owner Robert Kraft said the club will ''be looking at our procedures and auditing how we do things'' with regard to character reviews.

''The New England Patriots are extremely disappointed to learn of Alfonzo Dennard's arrest. We take this matter very seriously and are working to get more information on the incident,'' the team said in a statement.

Dennard's arrest is his second in 15 months. He hasn't served a 30-day jail sentence for the assault outside a Lincoln bar on Apr. 21, 2012. That is scheduled to begin next March. He also was sentenced to two years of probation.

Hernandez, a star tight end, was arrested on June 26 and charged with murder in the killing of Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty. The Patriots cut Hernandez after he was arrested and before the charges were announced.

Dennard and Hernandez both were highly-touted college prospects whose draft stock dropped because of character concerns.

Seven days after being charged with assault, Dennard was drafted in the seventh round last year out of Nebraska by the Patriots. They drafted Hernandez in the fourth round in 2010 after he violated the substance abuse policy at Florida.

Miller Time

Merton Hanks is now the NFL?s vice president of football operations. One of his many responsibilities is to make sure that players adhere to new rules this coming season about wearing thigh and knee pads.

Hanks used to play safety in the league. And back in his playing days, once it was no longer mandatory, sometimes he wouldn?t wear thigh and knee pads. But that was then, and this is now.

If a player is caught in the game without the required pads, not only will he face a fine of at least $5,000, as in any other case of being nonuniform in his uniform, but he will also get yanked from the field until he becomes pad-compliant.

"The more important deterrent, quite frankly, is that player will be removed from the game, and no player wants to miss time on game day," Hanks told USA Today. "The coaches certainly have voiced their opinion ? that's not something they're willing to tolerate. Can you imagine having a player that you've designed a play for not in the game because he's chosen not to adhere to the padding options that every other player has to adhere to?"

Plus, the pads have evolved to the extent that they shouldn?t be slowing anyone down. Players will use a "lighter, stronger, more up-to-date pad," Hanks said.

No one is supposed to make it onto the field minus the pads, because each team has an NFL minder assigned to make sure everyone is appropriately dressed.

"If we have a player that ? slips through the cracks and he is on the field, at that point, we will notify the sideline team designee,? Hanks said, ?[and] we will notify the back judge of the officials group to give this young man an opportunity to make the adjustment. And if he refuses, he will be removed from the game."

Who are the top 10 players in the NFL?

Who are the top 10 players in the NFL?

No arrests this week

At any given moment, there are around 1,700 rostered players in the NFL. Mike Florio, the Pro Football Talk crew and 38 other members of the media did their best to narrow that giant number down to the top 100 players in the league. Easier said than done.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nbc-yahoo-sports/pft-top-10-players-nfl-224110466--ocid.yahoo.html

Above is a recap of the 10 best players on the list, so who made the cut? Or more importantly, who's number one? Tom Brady is coming off his second straight AFC Championship appearance, as well as 4,800 yards and 34 TDs. Adrian Peterson rebounded from a torn ACL and MCL to run for 2,097 yards and win league MVP. And Aaron Rodgers posted a league-best 108.0 quarterback rating en route to a second consecutive NFC North title.

Who would be your number one?

McNabb calls it a career; Eagles to retire No. 5

McNabb calls it a career; Eagles to retire No. 5

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Donovan McNabb made it official on Monday and called it a career, doing so as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The six-time Pro Bowl quarterback will have his No. 5 retired by the Eagles on Sept. 19 during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs, who are now led by former Eagle head coach Andy Reid.

:mj07: Stick it baby......

"(It's a) special day," said McNabb at a press conference on Monday. "I'm not one for emotion, but it's a tough one."

McNabb played his first 11 NFL seasons with the Eagles, then spent two tough years in Washington and Minnesota before sitting out the 2012 season.

The Eagles, under Reid's direction, selected the Syracuse product with the second overall pick of the 1999 draft. He led the Eagles to 91 wins in the regular season with nine playoff victories and holds nearly every team passing record, including 32,873 yards and 216 touchdown passes.

"Donovan McNabb was a franchise-changing quarterback for the Eagles and helped raise the bar of success for this franchise during his 11-year tenure with the team," said owner Jeffrey Lurie. "On the field, the numbers that Donovan posted during his time in an Eagles uniform speak for themselves. He is the franchise leader in nearly every major passing category and is the all-time winningest quarterback in Eagles history. His unique ability to make plays through the air and with his legs made him one of the most dynamic players this city has ever seen. Donovan was the face and the focal point of so many of our great Eagles teams and he helped make this franchise a contender each and every year that he was here.

"The number '5' has become synonymous with one of the greatest eras of Eagles football, and ensuring that no one else will ever wear Donovan's number, we honor one of the greatest playmakers to ever wear an Eagles uniform."

The Eagles won five NFC East titles, made five appearances in the NFC Championship Game and reached Super Bowl XXXIX with McNabb directing the offense.

McNabb was traded to Washington before the 2010 season and played 13 games for the Redskins. He fell out of favor with Washington head coach Mike Shanahan and was benched late in the season, then was traded to Minnesota prior to the 2011 campaign and lasted only six games with the Vikings before being benched in October and released in December.

In 167 career games, McNabb completed 59 percent of his passes for 37,276 yards with 234 touchdowns and 117 interceptions. His 3,459 rushing yards rank sixth all-time among NFL quarterbacks.

The AFC powers

The AFC powers

Though I think many have exaggerated the demise of the Ravens, they have lost an unprecedented seven starters from Super Bowl XLVII. Before this season, no defending NFL champion ever had lost more than five.

The Steelers have one of the NFL?s best quarterbacks in Ben Roethlisberger, but their aging defense is slated to start five players (DE Brett Keisel, LB Larry Foote, S Troy Polamalu, S Ryan Clark and CB Ike Taylor) who are 32 or older.

And the starting LB corps of Foote, LaMarr Woodley, Lawrence Timmons and Jason Worilds sounds much less imposing than the units that have previously anchored Pittsburgh?s 3-4 D.

The Bengals might be one of the AFC?s best teams, but come on. They?re the Bengals. And they last won a playoff game on Jan. 6, 1991, and that winless postseason drought is the longest in the NFL.

The Texans are clearly the AFC South?s most talented team, but would you trust QB Matt Schaub and that passing game to lead your franchise deep into the playoffs?

Last year Schaub and the Texans lost to the Patriots, who will always be contenders as long as QB Tom Brady is around, in the divisional round of the playoffs. But in part because of the injuries to TE Rob Gronkowski, murder allegations against TE Aaron Hernandez and the offseason defection of WR Wes Welker, Brady is without his top five receiving targets from last year.

Compounding the problem in New England is that coach Bill Belichick has not been able to acquire a reliable pass rusher or shutdown cornerback on the defensive side.

Welker?s current team, the Broncos, is the class of the AFC West and the AFC. Despite the loss of Elvis Dumervil and the potential suspension to LB Von Miller, Denver, which finished 13-3 last year, bolstered its weaknesses in the secondary and running game. Both inadequacies presented themselves when the Broncos could not finish off Baltimore last season in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Denver brought in CBs Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Quentin Jammer, and it drafted RB Montee Ball to help QB Peyton Manning, who could be even better after another year of recovery from neck surgery and another year in the Broncos? system.

That makes the Broncos the heavy favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.

Prior to that franchise?s Super Bowl victory in 1998, the NFC won the previous 13 Super Bowls ? often in dominating fashion.

That trend could start to resurface in 2014

It will be interesting

It will be interesting

I don't see this 25 year old walking off the field!

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper has returned from his excused absence and practiced with the team on Tuesday.

The Eagles had excused Cooper last Friday and sent him away for counseling after video surfaced of him using a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert in June.

"It felt great," Cooper told reporters after Tuesday's joint practice session with the New England Patriots. "I love being out there on the field playing football. That's what I do and that's what I love."

Cooper is expected to start at wide receiver Friday when the Eagles open their preseason schedule against the Patriots.

"I went in and talked to everyone and everyone seemed to support me," Cooper continued. "We just talked about the situation and how big that is. I realize how many people I've hurt, how many families I've hurt, how many young kids I've hurt. I take full responsibility for it."

The 25-year-old University of Florida product was a reserve receiver last season and was likely going to have a similar role this year until Jeremy Maclin tore his ACL early in camp. Cooper caught 23 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns in 2012.

The Eagles released their first depth chart on Monday, and Cooper was listed as the second-string wide receiver.

RG3 is attempting to return from major knee surgery performed just seven months ago after he tore the ACL and LCL in his right knee during Washington's NFC wild-card loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

He was moving well in his return to practice this week despite a brace on the knee but the positive signs haven't convinced Washington coach Mike Shanahan, who is taking a prudent, cautious approach with an eye on having his franchise player for Week 1 of the regular season, Sept. 9 against division rival Philadelphia.

Ever the competitor Griffin said he didn't understand Shanahan's plan or like it.

"I can't B.S. that answer," the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year said. "No. I don't like it, and there's some part of it that I do understand. I don't understand all of it."

Realizing he was creating a manufactured controversy, RG3 backed off his strong words shortly thereafter.

"I just want everybody to know if there's any questions about if there's a rift between me and Coach or if there's a conflict, there is no conflict," Griffin said. "Coaches coach. I'm the player. Coach has a plan and I'm abiding by that plan.

Retired Hall-of-Famers file lawsuit against NFL Films

Five pro football Hall-of-Famers and several other notable retired players have filed a lawsuit against NFL Films, challenging that they were not compensated for use of the players' images.

The case is titled Culp vs. NFL Films. The five NFL Hall-of-Famers are Curley Culp, John Riggins, Ron Yary, Dave Casper and Tom Mack.

The case, which was filed in U.S. District Court in New Jersey, alleges an existing proposed settlement is not adequate at protecting the publicity rights of retired players.

The suit was filed on behalf of the plaintiffs by ex-NFL player and attorney Bob Stein, who played eight seasons and later became the founding CEO and president of the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves.

Steve Berman is another attorney who filed the lawsuit. He is the lead attorney in a similar case, Keller v. NCAA. In that case, student-athletes are challenging the NCAA's ability to sell their likeness to video-game developers.

The class action case that was filed Tuesday represents all ex-NFL players who opted out of a previous lawsuit against NFL Films fronted by former player Fred Dryer that was settled earlier this year. Those players believe that agreement doesn't adequately value their rights.

"I am pleased to see there are other players who also see the Dryer settlement is inadequate and unfair and want to provide retired players a meaningful settlement which more squarely tackles the financial windfall NFL Films has made through the misappropriation of our likenesses over the years," said Dryer.

Berman said there are new legal arguments missing from the Dryer lawsuit and if ruled in their favor, the players could receive meaningful compensation.

"We anticipate spending a great deal of time determining the amount of value NFL Films has created over the years to give us a better appreciation of the financial magnitude of this case, something that didn't happen in the Dryer case," Berman said.

The plaintiffs of the new lawsuit were originally supporters of the Dryer case, but according to Dryer, that deal from the original lawsuit "does not guarantee a single dollar will be paid directly to any retired player, even the ones who are most needy."

Instead, Dryer said the NFL payments mainly go toward programs and charities that already exist.

The new suit charges NFL Films got revenue unlawfully through violations of the right of publicity.

"We played by the rules during our pro careers, and all we are asking is for the NFL to play by the rules now that we have retired," said Riggins, who played 14 seasons in the NFL and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992. "Our contracts only permitted the use of our images while we played, under player contract; if the NFL wants to continue using the image, the rules are clear. The NFL must receive our consent and pay to use us."

Von Miller Tweets Super Bowl Prediction

Inspired by the recent recovery of his cousin, who was involved in a serious automobile crash, linebacker Von Miller on Tuesday guaranteed the Denver Broncos would win the Super Bowl next season.

Who Ya Got?

The odds-on favorites to win Super Bowl XLVIII, as provided by the Las Vegas Hotel (through Monday). Yes, Von Miller's team is in the conversation.
Patriots 5-1
49ers 7-1
Broncos 7-1
Seahawks 8-1
Packers 10-1

He initially posted his thoughts on Twitter, and then explained his thought process in an interview Tuesday with "The Herd With Colin Cowherd" on ESPN Radio.

"You can post this where ever.. Denver broncos will win the Super Bowl 2013 #4UJEREMIAH #IGUARANTEEIT58 if you are with us Retweet," he tweeted earlier Tuesday.

That tweet came after another tweet where he announced that his 6-year-old cousin, Jeremiah Clark-Martinez, had emerged from a coma.

"This is why we win the Super Bowl 2013. My little cousin Jeremiah came out of a coma from a car wreck In west Tx I [love] U," he wrote.

In the interview with ESPN Radio, he went into more detail about his cousin's recovery, explaining his boast wasn't about him "being cocky" but that his cousin had motivated him to make the bold guarantee.

"I was motivated by my younger cousin ... he got in a wreck about a week ago and he just came out of a coma a couple of days ago," he said. "His first couple of words was, they asked him a couple of questions and, of all the stuff to remember, he remembered that his cousin played for the Denver Broncos and his name was Von Miller."

Broncos LB Von Miller comments on his prediction that Denver will win Super Bowl XLVIII, losing to the Ravens in the playoffs and more.

More Podcasts ?

That was enough to fire Miller up for the upcoming season.

"It just moved me and I'm motivated and I'm going to work extremely hard. Not like I haven't done it before, but this year it's just a little bit extra for me and I'm extremely motivated," he said.

When he was asked how Peyton Manning will react to his guarantee, Miller said he doesn't think his quarterback will mind.

"I think he already has a personal guarantee with himself," he said. "I'm not speaking for anybody else, I'm speaking for me and the work I'm going to do and the work I'm putting in this year, but I bet I have some guys in the locker room that's willing to work with me and take the path I'm willing to take."

The Broncos entered the playoffs last year as the No. 1 seed in the AFC, buoyed by Manning's Comeback Player of the Year season, but lost to the eventual-Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in overtime after allowing a deflating 70-yard tying touchdown reception by Jacoby Jones with 31 seconds remaining in regulation.

Miller set a Broncos record last season with 18.5 sacks

Broncos LB Miller hit with 6-game suspension

Englewood, CO (Sports Network) - The National Football League made it official on Tuesday, suspending Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller for the first six games of the 2013 season for violations of the league's substance abuse policy.

The 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year will not be eligible to return to action until the week following the Broncos' Oct. 13 contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"The Substances of Abuse policy requires everyone to comply with the rules. Although my suspension doesn't result from a positive test, there is no excuse for my violations of the rules," Miller said in a statement issued shortly after the ruling.

"I made mistakes and my suspension has hurt my team, Broncos fans, and myself. I am especially sorry for the effect of my bad decisions on others. I will not make the same mistakes about adhering to the policy in the future. During my time off the field, I will work tirelessly and focus exclusively on remaining in peak shape. I look forward to contributing immediately upon my return to the field and bringing a championship back to the people of Denver."

Reports earlier this summer indicated that Miller was headed for a four-game penalty, but ESPN and NFL.com both revealed in recent days that an extra two games was on the table and that the third-year star was trying to negotiate the ban back to four games.

The Denver Post had cited league sources as saying Miller's suspension was not because of a positive test for a performance-enhancing drug or a recreational drug. However, the NFL's website previously stated it could be for missing tests or counseling sessions. :popcorn2

"Von is one of our teammates. He's part of the family," said Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. "I certainly have his back. We support him 100 percent."

Miller was the second overall pick in the 2011 draft. He recorded 64 tackles and 11 1/2 sacks in his first season to earn the league's top rookie award on defense. The 24-year-old Texas A&M product built on his impressive debut campaign by posting 68 tackles and 18 1/2 sacks in 2012.

Denver opens the season against the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 5, then faces the New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and Jaguars over the following five weeks.

Miller will be allowed to return to game action for the Broncos' following contest, at Indianapolis on Oct. 20.

"Von has acknowledged making some mistakes in the past and is now being held accountable under the policies the league has in place. While it's very disappointing that we will be without him for the start of the season, we will support him as a football team and organization," said Broncos head coach Jon Fox in a team-issued release.

"All of us will stand by Von and help him however possible as he continues his personal growth off the field. Replacing him on the field will not be easy, but every team must deal with adversity. We will plan accordingly and be prepared. I am confident our team will step up and meet the challenge. I expect Von to stay in excellent shape and be ready to play at a high level when he returns to the Broncos.
