I saw Box's post last week that he and his wife were heading down to Orlando to celebrate his daughters birthday. After nearly 15 years of his awesome stories as well as his incredible insight to the MAAC Conference, as well as helping me put a few duckets in my pockets I decided to reach out and see if he would have any time while here to meet up. I got his email from Jack and asked him just that. He got back to me quickly just before he was leaving for the airport out of Austin and gave me his number and said once he figured out his schedule he would get back with me. Once he was settled in he suggested that we meet up at Buffalo Wild Wings Sunday afternoon for the late games. I confirmed that was good for me as well.

After our confirmation I began to second guess my suggested meeting. I had learned years ago while working in radio that sometimes things are best left as perceived rather than to actually see behind the curtain. I had the opportunity to meet quite a few bands and a handful of them I was really excited to have the chance to talk with since I was a big fan. Unfortunately sometimes those conversation only ripped my heart out as I found out the true assholes that they actually were. I never listened to their music quite the same after that. Years later as I DJ'd in a titty bar I met a ton of athletes as well and the exact same situation occurred. I won't go into great detail in this account, but I will say that the biggest asshole by far out of everyone was Bret Favre. The coolest was Mitch Williams in sports and Mark Slaughter in music. But I digress. I have thoroughly enjoyed Box's numerous stories and have great respect for his humanitarian efforts over the years as well. I really wanted to keep that perception a reality. That being said, I decided we only live once and how bad could he possibly be..........

I was at another bar watching the end of the Steeler's game with some friends and it was running a bit long. I called Box to let him know I was still going to meet him, but would be about 20 minutes late. He said no problem and that he would be the one wearing the North Texas hat. (Of course he would)..........When I got there he was easy to spot. When I walked over and introduced myself he acknowledged me with a firm handshake and a huge grin. That was the last time there was silence between us for the next 4 hours. We both may, or may not, have had some financial interest in a couple of the late games. We were fortunately on the same side of those eventual winning wagers which certainly helped the experience along the way.

I said, "What are we drinking?"........He just laughed and said to order whatever I wanted and it was on him because he had a great day on Saturday. I told him I wasn't there for handouts, but still wanted to know what he was drinking. He admitted that he and his wife had just left Ghirardelli and beer was the last thing on his mind, but reiterated for me to drink up and he was buying. I just laughed at him because when he had called me on Saturday to confirm, he had just finished a banana split at Ghirardelli as well. One would think he weighs in at 250 plus with just these couple of food choices, but that's far from the truth.

Not long after my first beer, and his first Sprite appeared, a 20-something guy walked up and asked if he could join us. I thought it was odd at first since there were plenty of seats available. I thought maybe he had overheard Box offering to pick up the tab. It turns out that wasn't the case at all. It was Box's daughters boyfriend who "just happened" to be there as well. He turned out to be a good kid. A bit more interested in the games for a fantasy value than a financial one, but that's ok. We both grabbed a couple of burgers and then the boyfriend got a call from the girlfriend that he should be headed back home. He quickly obliged. The conversation covered many a topics, but most all included smiles and laughter.

I love this forum and this community, and of course Jack for making it all possible. Box is heading back down early next year and I think he is going to want to meet up at Ghirardelli next time, but that's fine by me. He's a great guy with great stories and a huge heart. What you read on here is what you get. He is definitely no Bret Favre.

Thanks for a great Sunday afternoon Box, and Jack for making it all possible. :0008

Good post and I knew you wouldn't be disappointed when I sent you Box's email.

The one sports idol I met that completely changed my opinion of was Johnny Unitas. I met him at a Pro-Am Golf tournament at Hobbits Glen Golf Club in Columbia, Maryland, where I worked as the starter as a kid, and he was the biggest prick I ever met in the 4 years I worked there, including every single member and visitor that ever played during the time I worked there.

Working for the airlines for so many years I was able to meet quite a few sports stars. The worst by a long margin was Emmitt Smith. A true asshole to his core. Ali was the best. An unbelievably great person. We spent several hours talking alone while he waited for a delayed flight. We talked about everything you could dream of from a fans point and more. He then wanted to go out in the terminal to see the fans as many had gathered hearing he was there. He mugged for every camera, spoke to every kid and was just awesome. When I put him in his seat he insisted that he stand back up. The flight attendants told him they were getting ready to leave and in his now soft voice he said, "I'm not going anywhere until I say good bye to my good friend Cris". He stood up and walked over to me and gave me the biggest bear hug and told me how happy he was that he got to meet me and said some very nice things that I would like to keep to myself right now but suffice it to say it made me cry later because of how he touched my heart. Two years or more than passed and I was at work when I received a message from passenger service. Mr. Ali was asking if I would be meeting his flight that afternoon. I was stunned to say the least. I met his flight as did throngs of fans. I was able to go down the jet bridge to meet the aircraft without all the people but I wasn't the only one with that idea. Ali walked off the plane and immediately smiled and walked right over to me and said "there's my favorite new trainer" and smiled ear to ear as we said hello with an unsteady handshake and strong hug. He and I enjoyed a great lunch. He remembered my wife's name at the time and everything I told him. He was genuinly interested in my life. I haven't seen him since but will never forget how kind and sincere he was to me.

Hope that helps,
FDC

This is why I don't want to meet Noley.....I don't want to see what he is doing behind the curtain. Great story nonetheless.

Ha!!!!!!!!! I certainly hope so. I imagine he hits his head more than I do, so that's a plus for me.

Hudson Valley area.....NY
Keyser....thank you for the nice comments.I feel the same way about you and had a great time on Sunday. It is amazing you can come to a place like this in MJ's and we all have the same interests. After talking and sharing stories with Keyser it was like I have known him for the past 15 years.
I know you guys here in MJ's have golf outings and have gone to super bowl parties together. That must be awesome to put a face and personalty to someone on this "blue board". I have met a few people here and its always a great experience.
I intend to see Keyser again in Feb when I go back to Orlando.Joshnaudi is in Austin and I'll hook up with him.Think there are a few of you here that are from the Austin area..that would be great if some of us could meet. I intend on going to at least 6 or 7 Texas hoops games and a few Texas St games..also will make my way up to Denton to see my North Texas...

The weather is so nice down here.I peek everyday and look at my NY weather..high of 41 and a low of 28,,and the winter hasn't really started yet.
I played racquetball all spring and summer in NY with my buddies.Played 3 times a week and had so much fun..There is hardly any racquetball in Austin. One place has it so I joined and play in a league. I have played for 2 weeks and my record is 1-17...I knew I was in trouble when I played my 1st game...I"m warming up with this guy and after about 3 minutes I'm ready...He says he's not warmed up yet as he is hitting backhand killers in the corner..after a few more minutes I ask if he is ready..he says he hasn't warmed up on the right side yet....wow.. I'm in trouble...beats me 15-3 with no mercy..play another guy right after...15-2....another guy 15-10 and the last guy 15-12....Now I know I'm 62 and these guys are all in their late 20's,30's and 40's but not one has any mercy in kicking my ass. The way the league scoring is set up is to beat who ever your playing by a lot...I have to adjust also because I play doubles and this is singles....
On Tuesday nite I'm in a bowling league with my son, daughter and wife..we are the only ones that rent shoes and don't have our own balls..my wife has her own shoes and my son has his own ball...we are in 14th place out of 38 teams and last nite played the 4th place team...its a handicap league and we got 174 pins before the 1st ball was rolled...by the 7th frame the other team was tied with us...and we lost by 110 pins.. the last time I bowled I kept my own score....maybe 30 years ago...but we had a blast....
So between racquetball and bowling this New Yorker is getting his ass busted in the Lone Star State..and enjoying every minute of it...

Thanks for the nice responses here. I wish I could many more of you here...Keyser it was a pleasure and you were so down to earth and I consider you a friend....I need to go work on my backhand now..take care..

Cool story, I envy you. There are 2 sports stars I'd love to meet, Gretzky and Ali.
