To me, this time of year is when you slice up some thick slices, put them on plain white bread (Captain Derst my fav), salt, pepper, mayo, and you have yourself a perfect summer sandwich. Anyone else eat them? How do you make it?

I will eat around 50 of them this summer. I live off of tomatos in the summer.

My tomato sandwich is on white toast, with salt, pepper and mayo. :toast:

Upstairs watching sports on the big TV.
My Grandma's favorite

My Grandma's favorite

picks them out of the garden big and juicy

little salt, pepper, sweet marjorum, on Rainbow Bread

Then she takes out her uppers and lowers and gnaws away.

ME, I toast the bread, slather it with butter, mayonaise, as much bacon as I can lift..now that is a BLT:toast:

perfect...have a little country produce place right down the street......the tomatoes are amazing..little more expensive...but worth it...

i use salt free wheat with a slice of low fat sharp cheddar(jack`s head explodes in 5..4..3..2)......some diced onions and green peppers...little lettuce...and either lite mayo or some barbecue sauce....slap it in the pizza drawer before i add the lettuce and tomato to get hot and crispy....

which brings up something i`ve always wondered...why are grocery store tomatoes so bad?..most of them have no taste ...they`re harder than pressure treated wood.... .no color.....

what do they do to those damned things?

Most commercially grown tomatoes taste as bad as they do because they are picked green and then forced to turn red by the introduction of Etheline gas, produced by ripe apples and other fruits that stimulates the simulation of ripening. It changes the color from yellow or green to red but doesn't really cause true "Ripening". It LOOKS ripe but has the taste and texture of unripe fruit.

It doesn't matter if they are hot house or farm grown...

They are both pretty much the same but you get a more direct injection of nutrients in to the plant through hydroponic growing techniques so if by 'hot house' you mean hydro, then there is a slight chance that the hydro tomatoes are slightly healthier.

I quit buying store tomatos a long time ago.

I have a sizable wager on the Ravens over 10.5, you don't think that was wise to do

11 wins with their weak schedule is certainly a reachable total..

would love to see them play Peyton for the AFC Championship in Indy..

Then Colts host the Super Bowl

Grow large amounts of tomatos each year only to watch them grow and then give them away. I literally hate ripe tomatos. I love fried green tomatos though!

Unless its a BLT, I quarter my tomatoes and put just a dash of pepper on them. Ours are beginning to ripen--we are picking 8-10 a day and are having trouble eating them all. Might end up canning a few this year...
